The restaurant is located at the center of the "town" of Greenbriar, which is basically a crossroads in the middle of farmland. It's hard to believe you're not on the outskirts of a major city like Huntsville. The hush puppies are great. I could fill myself up with just those. The Old Greenbriar (not to be confused with the "original" Greenbriar) offers some of the best barbecue and fried catfish you'll find in the south. While everything on the menu is fantastic, Greenbriar is most famous for their hot and fresh hushpuppies that they'll keep bringing to your table as long as you are still breathing. In the area for business and had the good fortune of stumbling across this little gem. Actually, "stumbling" isn't quite the right word. I actively searched for the best bbq in town by asking the locals... and I couldn't have been more pleased with the results. First and foremost, kudos for the hospitality. I walked in the door right at closing time as the owner was counting his bills for the night. And while he could have apologetically ushered me back into the rain, he kindly allowed me to make a purchase. Pulled pork was tender and flavorful. Hush puppies were crispy where they needed to be, and fluffy everywhere else. My only regret is not getting the sweet tea. Or even a coke. This local BBQ joint is slammin. They serve you fresh hush puppies as soon as you are seated and have delicious white BBQ sauce. BBQ ribs have a dry rub marinade and the meat fall off the bone. Wanted a barbecue plate but they did not have baked beans or potato salad Id never heard of a barbecue place that did not have baked beans or potato salad I just thought that was the two sides that went with every barbecue plate. I'm not being funny I'm serious and they don't have either one. Other than this oddity everything was good the service was good as well. And I'm sure if they did make baked beans and potato salad they would be equally as good all n all a good experience and Look forward to going back. I've never understood why this place is so popular. The bbq is flavorless compared to Whitts and Lawler's. The fish at Jiffys is better than this and Big Shakes on Martin Rd and Champys on Madison Blvd are hands down better than greenbriar . The hush puppies are good, but If it's busy they tend to be undercooked. The fish is meh at best, and they are suppose to be known for their bbq and catfish and neither are that good nor memorable to garner a repeat visit. Went there for supper and boy was it good! I had the catfish dinner and the wife had the pork plate. Both were outstanding. The hushpuppies they bring to the table top munch on were top notch. We both had fries and coleslaw for sides. One note, the slaw is vinegar based, not mayo. I liked it, wife, not soso much. Just something to thinking of if you choose slaw. Highly recommended by a great group of southern gals I headed into the country for a rib plate. Real America here! Not fancy, not well decorated minus the two great old signs saying PORK and HUSHPUPPIES some old school hand made tables and a great old panoramic of Ft Devens, Massachusetts! What arrived was wonderfully basket of light tasty hushpuppies and a nice plate of Ribs. Meat fell right off the bones nice exterior color but I suspect they may boil then first and then smoke as color was not pink and no smoke rings, these were not a dry rub rib. The taste was good plain, but better with the sauce, I only saw one kind on the table it was sweet and mild. Cole slaw was well balanced for all the meat it was a nice minced cabbage and very refreshing but a tad sweet. Sweet potatoes was great and a nice touch it comes with a side cup of cinnamon. Unfortunatley Beer is only found across the street at the country store. Check your pulse for a quarter at the register or have some soft serve ice cream . So, I expected the Catfish to be good, but the hush puppies were not as remembered. I ate there Saturday with a friend and have to say I was disappointed. I thought the pulled pork sandwich was skimpy at best for $4. and the slaw was not only skimpy but tasteless. Isn't slaw more than just shredded or grated cabbage. This had no carrot or mayo or barely enough of anything to give it a taste. So the soft serve was only a quarter ...not too impressive. I would give this place one star and never go back. Also the open platters of hush puppies during flu season was a stretch and they were small and greasy. Not at all like real hush puppies should be. This place is INCREDIBLE! A small, out in the middle of no where spot that is a treasure to find! We went for the first time late yesterday (Sunday) and are happy to have had a friend suggest this place! We sat at the table, and the seat wasn't even warmed yet, when our server placed a huge basket of hushpuppies down on our table. We ordered our drinks and in no time they were delivered, in large glasses. After having a very pleasant conversation with one of the workers (asking him what he suggested) we placed our orders. My wife decided on the small (you call this small?) BBQ Pork dinner with slaw and sweet potato... When her meal came out I wonder how many pounds the LARGE is... the small was huge, to say the least... (and the left overs will make for a fantastic lunch today!)... I ordered the large still on the bone catfish. Moby Dick wasn't this big! The baked potato was big, and after I added the butter and sour cream, I let it sit to become my desert when I was done with these three huge catfish! My wife makes an awesome slaw, so to me, I like hers better... but it's a good slaw, just not as good as the wife's... Those hushpuppies ought to be against the law! They are out of this world, FANTASTIC! Somehow, the ones in our basket kept disappearing... I think we got 2 rounds of refills? Some of them jumped, all by themselves, into that to go box my wife needed for her bbq...I - on the other hand - remember my mom's 'be sure to clean your plate' rule, as I was able to whittle every delicious piece of catfish from it's bones... The staff here are all wonderful to their customers. We didn't have to ask for anything - (especially the hush puppies!) - and we will be back. We have dined at this restaurant for 25 years, but unfortunately, this was not the staff, kitchen help, or management's night. After being seated, there was a wait for at least 20 minutes before our order was taken. Drink order arrived wrong, and then the food was undercooked. Since our waitress never returned, a fried catfish order was sent back by another server, then discovered the BBQ chicken was also undercooked and cold. Decided at that point it was time to leave. One of the owners was behind the register, and he does not need to be interfacing with the public -- he was arrogant and condescending. He also charged for the two drinks, although one was wrong. Called back to tell them of the mistake and they said to bring it back and to pick up our right order. Well this time we checked it before we left. Got home and I was disappointed. The hush puppies are over cooked, the fish was not seasoned at all and they were scored three times on each side in an effort I can only assume was meant to cook the fish faster but made the fish greasy. We were looking forward to our visit to Greenbrier. However we were greatly disappointed with the amount of disrespect and unprofessionalism displayed by the man at the cash register. The restaurant was freezing so the waitress instructed us to redirect the A/C vent. At this point the man behind the counter began yelling across the restaurant, shouting at us like we were his children. The things he said were out of line and extremely rude, not to mention the large scene he made. A customer should never be spoken to or treated in that way. Also the BBQ was not that good.
