The coffee is honestly second to none. I have never tasted a coffee that was so balanced, healthy, and rich in taste/texture. I don't know how they do it, but they're doing it right! The man who sold me this coffee was really accommodating and friendly. He recommended the Italian roast which was their most popular type of roast. I would definitely recommend that one if it's your first time it's not too dark. It's not too subtle. It's right in the middle. in terms of the ambience, the business is located in a commercial building. It's small but I didn't mind it as long as I got the coffee lol. read more

I absolutely love GreenStar Coffee! I think I first discovered it at an Earth Day celebration more than 10 years ago and have been making visits to their warehouse roastery ever since then (warehouse pickup saves shipping costs!) they offer everything to love when starting your day: Local fresh roasted coffee organic fair trade coffee. I like to get the whole beans and grind my own and usually go for the 5 pound bags. I have found they stay quite fresh in their packaging. There is nothing like opening a new bag. I wish I could capture that amazing aroma to share!! I have tried many beans and blends but our overall house favorite is Morning Star. It is easy on the pallet and good anytime. I also like to keep the Espresso blend on hand which is great and offers a nice kick. I have also enjoyed their teas and even get a small bag of decaf, which my parents love when they visit. It is always a pleasure to pick up the coffee and usually I am greeted by one of the owners, Dan, who is friendly and makes time for a chat. They do have all the safety protocols in place for Covid so you should not hesitate to order ahead swing by for a door pickup! read more

Green Star is the go-to coffee roastery for both my husband & I. I drink decaf and love the richness of a 50-50 mix of house and espresso. My husband's fave is Guatemala. The owner has been so nice to me as a gardener, too. He saves the chaff from the beans: great compost for acid-loving plants like my blueberries. read more

Best espresso EVER. Enjoyed the espresso shots working at Chocolats du CaliBressan a few years ago. Their store closed recently and have had a hard time finding this coffee to get on the go from a store here in Santa Barbara. Hopefully they'll open up their own coffee shop in town. read more

Quite possibly the best coffee in Santa Barbara. (5/5 green stars also) I run a nonprofit called the Green Stars Project so I was super-excited to see a place called Green Star Coffee listed in Santa Barbara. My project is all about ethical consumerism, so I went to their location in the Public Market with a little trepidation, hoping that it would not be the kind of place that serves commodity coffee in Styrofoam cups. Thankfully, I had no cause for concern - they live up to their name :-) More on that in the next paragraph... Overall, I tried coffee in several places in SB - Green Star, Handlebar, Helena Avenue Bakery, and the SB Roasting Co. Of the four of them, I thought Green Star had the best overall experience when you combine quality/experience with sustainability/ethics. I had a small Americano - pretty decent at $2.50, considering it contains two shots of organic, fair trade coffee. Nice Americano: not too weak (thanks to the two shots) and nicely roasted (not over-roasted). The barista was super-friendly. Nice seating area outside the public market. I'm also giving Green Star Coffee 5/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: * All of their beans are certified organic and Fair Trade. Most of it is also shade-grown (impt for habitats). * I read that one of their suppliers, a coffee farm in Guatemala, was affected by coffee leaf rust. Green Star agreed to pay them higher prices to get them over the difficult patch. They seem like genuinely good guys. * It's one of the few places I've come across lately that uses compostable cups. You know regular cups have a plastic lining, right? The vast majority of conventional cups end up in landfill because there's nothing else to do with them. Green Star's hot cup lids and cold cups are also compostable. * Their milk, sugar and agave are all organic. Plant-based milks available too, naturally. * They are a zero-landfill café. We first tasted the Morning Star coffee, made by Green Star, while staying at a quaint B&B in Santa Barbara. The coffee was very good - dark, smooth and nice, and something we would like to keep in our stashes at home. At the advice of the innkeeper, we managed to find it at an upscale local grocer in Santa Barbara. I think it was either Whole Foods or Bristol Farms. Since then, not living close enough to just jaunt over there to replenish our coffee, I have found we can purchase it online. Good deal at between $13 and $16 for a full pound. We stumbled in thinking it was a coffee shop and the gentleman who greeted us was so friendly and welcoming. He offered to fill up our travel mugs with some brewed coffee he had ready, and let us fill our water bottles in their kitchen. We bought a pound of Colombian whole beans because it just smelled so good in there, we wanted to take it with us. Just to be clear this is not a coffee shop, but rather a coffee roaster in an industrial park. They serve no coffee in this location. Yelp is often confusing and I have found myself misled by the their categories before. That out of the way, their coffee is great and you can buy it locally at many stores and it is served at a lot of good coffee shops in town. I prefer their Sumatra which is delish and under $14 a pound. You can also order online for pickup, very easy 101 freeway access if you are passing through town. However the dude at the front desk I just picked my coffee up from had terrible customer service, I will assume that is anomaly. read more

About a year and a half ago I upped my coffee game and started buying whole bean, freshly roasted coffee. Oh man, that was a good idea, very tasty but it can get expensive if you are buying from coffee shops like French Press or Handlebar. These places sell their freshly roasted coffee for $25+ per pound, which had me rethinking buying tinned, pre-ground coffee. Then I remembered a few years ago my professor mentioning a coffee roaster hidden back in the Carneros Industrial Park (next to Captain Fatty's and the CHP station) and decided to stop by and see what was up. I've been buying coffee here for about six months now! They are a fairly small operation, you walk right into their roasting facility and pick out your coffee from their wall of delicious varieties. I LOVE their Ethiopian Amaro Gayo, a super unique flavor that's great for both pourover and espresso, Sumatra and their Espresso Blend are a close second. Everything is Fair Trade, certified organic from two different organizations, and Rainforest Certified. Oh, did I mention that everything is $10/pound $6/half for whole bean? The last bag of beans I bought from them were still warm from roasting. Amazing read more

I never realized we had a such great coffee roaster here in Santa Barbara. My first visit I spent half an hour just talking about coffee with Dan. I mainly drink espresso and Dan made a recommendation (Red's Espresso) that I absolutely loved - the crema is outstanding. The quality is first rate, prices are nice and the service is personal and friendly. In the past I have mail ordered coffee from Peet's and from Espresso Vivace in Seattle.
