The facilities are used by whomever, whenever. But ever since we moved to Colorado, we have taken a picture of the Continental Divide from here, any season, any weather. For decades, on our way to skiing, my husband made the kids climb up on the snow bank at the edge of the parking lot to get a photo of them with the Divide behind them. I must say, it has made for great memories, some of them very, very cold! Do stop here for a few minutes, especially if you are not a regular up here.

Clean and modern rest area surrounded by trees in a park like setting…read more There is an easily accessed RV dump station, dog walks with provided clean up bags, and a short trail down to various spots along the Eagle River. The trail to me was perfect, easy and short but watch for roots that might trip you up. When you need to stretch your legs and get a few minutes of nature and the white noise roar of the river this is a welcome refresher. The restrooms were clean and did not smell bad nor were they stuffy. It's clear the folks who maintain it and the nearby down care about making travelers feel welcome and safe. Tip, some of the auto parking is down a little hill but close to the river. If the hill is a challenge for you ignore this area and the handicap spots and keep going. Right around the corner is flat parking with a flat accessible access to the restrooms. Also note there is no over night camping and no camping in the lobby even if the weather is bad. You'll have to head to a real campground or nearby hotel.

It is one mile north of Grand Lake and just south of the park entrance station on U.S. Highway 34 (Trail Ridge Road). I did the long 40+ mile drive from Estes Park to here and was happy to finally get out of the car and walk around. It is a nice visitor center with restrooms, paper map, books, merchandise and exhibits with information about the park. There are park rangers on hand to answer questions that you may have. You can get permits and information about backcountry camping and hiking in the park at this visitor center. After spending a week in Rocky Mountain National Park, I enjoyed checking out the topographical map of the park and seeing all of the places that I visited. I covered a lot of ground while I was here. The Tonahutu Spur Trail starts outside the visitor center near the parking lot. Sadly, a fire burned up many of the trees on this trail years back. Don't forget to get your national park passport book stamped while at the visitor center.

I got a shirt, sweats, hats, and a few other items that looked like fun things to have. I skipped the $20 onsie. I probably should have bought that too. As for food, I love the fresh chips and those chopped brisket sandwiches. I did not think the breakfast sandwiches were as tasty. There is a wall of beef jerky, but I went straight to the glass and asked started pointing and asking for it by weight. Jerky isn't cheap, but it's good. My favorite was like a refrigerated ready to eat sausage.
