I credit Green Cactus SBU with keeping me alive during my time in Stony Brook. I love their salsa bar (one of the first chains to actually have a salsa bar) and they seem to have gotten the rice just right, unlike (IMO) Chipotle. I love going there on a sunny summer day and sitting outside. Any time I'm back in the Stony Brook area, I make sure to hit the Green Cactus. I miss the Green Cactus I used to visit 10 years ago. Lately the good lacks that fresh taste and the salsa bar is just a mess. I called my order in and showed up 15 mins later. When I walked in I noticed a lot of customers standing around and two cooks stating at a bunch of tickets. I paid and proceeded to wait for 20 minutes whole they cooked everybody's food and eventually got to my ticket. It looked like my order didn't make it to the kitchen until I showed up and paid. A step up from Chipotle. Everytime I go here, I find all the food to be fresh, simple, and delicious. As a bonus, the prices are all reasonable and there's a good variety of options to choose from. The shopping center as a whole has good range of stores to go to. read more

My personal favorites here are 1) nachos with black beans and steak and 2) any kind of burrito (optionally cheesed up with the 'make it wet' feature). Service is fast enough (not super speedy but not slow) and the staff are nice. Really good stuff, in my opinion! And close to campus, so even more awesomeness. I ordered a chicken burrito (I tend to be very boring and traditional) that came out to be 8 dollars and some change. Included in it was melted, cheesy goodness (mozzerella?), guacamole, chicken, lettuce... and all of it really tasted very good together. Unfortunately, you have to pay extra for the rice and beans. They give you a medium to large portion. Cool stuff: They have a little stand of pico-de-gallo and sauces station, so you can go up and get as much pico-de-gallo and salsa you want. Definitely favored Green Cactus for it. The place is spacious, but not too large. Great for a quick lunch or dinner. I will return later for more! Next time, steak burrito! read more

I ordered the shrimp burrito and my husband ordered the beef burrito. Both were absolutely atrocious. I have never left a Yelp review before but the food here was so disgusting that I felt compelled to let others know. As soon as I got home I immediately got sick. Both burritos were soggy and tasteless. I probably should've left when the guy behind the counter told my husband and I "I tried my best" but I against my better judgement, I gave it a shot. I don't know where my original review went but somehow it mysteriously vanished off the page.... hmmmmmmmm. Green cactus is a decent eat-in join. It isn't fancy or anything and there are simply white tables with hot sauce and no table cloth. The prices are pretty high, I usually get the torqutos which are 7.50 and it comes with two and some sour cream. It tasted good but the price is pretty high for what you get. The stuff tasted fresh but again, this is nothing you probably wouldn't find at Stop And Shop for cheaper in the frozen food section. The chicken Quesadilla was 9.50 It was not very large at all and did not taste better than the one you find at Taco Bell. It is worth noting that I don't like Taco Bell, this place claims they are so great but when you add a drink to your meal you get about 11.00 for a quesadilla that you could have gotten for 6 at Taco Bell. If there is nothing around you and you are craving Taco Bell style food without a car then go and get the Toquitos but if you have a care, don't have a ton of money or want authentic Mexican then stay away from here. read more

Visited this place from Texas and would leave it 0 stars if I could. Ordered a bean and cheese burrito, one of my favorite foods, and not sure how someone could mess that up but they did. It came with beans (not smashed) and LOADS of rice. I attempted to exchange it for something better (the enchiladas), and they refused to put CHEESE on my enchiladas!!!! Not sure they even know what Mexican food is. Furthermore, ordered guacamole for my husband and it was the worst he ever had- runny guac. I love this place! I've ordered the veggie burrito with extra guacamole and no cow more times than I'd care to admit. It always satisfies. Consistently delicious! I just left here and immediately created a yelp account because I was more than satisfied after leaving. My boyfriend and I ordered the taquitos which were amazing and came with more than enough guacamole, pico de gallo and sour cream. We also got a chicken, shrimp, and carne asada tacos which were loaded and very fresh. They even have a counter where you can get sliced lemons and limes and salsa. Food is average, but wildly inconsistent. Staff comes across as they're doing you a favor taking your order.

Their customer service is poor. Chicken is dry. They place HOT chicken on top of a salad resulting in a wilted bowl of lettuce with watery unflavored beans at the bottom, breaking the tostada down to a soggy mess. Their taquitos are essentially wads of dried meat in a corny shell! Not to mention this place is over priced. We placed a large take out order for our office and all 6 people hated it. read more

The food is out of this world and consistent (I've been going here since I was a kid) but the only criticism I have is that sometimes the staff and atmosphere can be a bit less welcoming than you'd hope for. Occasionally you'll find yourself feeling a bit unwelcome when calling in or placing your order in person (most recently I was told the store was closed when calling only to find the guy told me this 20 minutes prior to the actual closing time) but the food definitely makes up for these occasional hiccups. No. Rate if for what it is, not what you think it should be. Green Cactus has one thing that bumps it above 4 stars: the best tasting chicken of all the Mexican places I've been to on LI. They do it JUST right. Yes, Green Cactus is mildly overpriced for what is offered, but so are a lot of things on LI. Green Cactus is a solid choice. What happened to you Green Cactus??? Ive been going to this place for about 10 years now. They started off great but are now something different. All of the employees are always miserable when I go in there which is a sign they're not treated properly. Last time I went I ordered and paid, waited 20 mins for them to make my order. When I asked about it after waiting the clerk said they forgot about my order and made me feel like it was my own fault. She didnt even apologise. Recently the food has been making me sick as well. Bad stomach aches, and not just me but my wife as well. I wont even go into the $8 chicken sandwich with barely a piece of chicken in it, almost all tomotoe filler.
