They give a whole brown paper bag of chips when you get a chicken quesadilla to go, but when you eat it in the restaurant, they literally give you 8 chips on top of the quesadilla on the plate. When I politely asked the lady there for a few more, she says "that's extra". I asked why you get more when it's takeout and a whole bag as opposed to just a few on the plate when you eat in the restaurant and she says, "that's not true." It surely is true. Every single to go quesadilla I've gotten there for the last 20 years has come with a full bag of chips that I can't even finish by myself.. but when you eat in the restaurant and order the same exact thing you're given 8 chips... I have a question for management - what is more expensive- a few extra corn chips or losing a customer for life? Sub average Mexican place that used to be better back in the day. They don't make their own corn or flour tortillas. Many places make their own corn tortillas at very least. The flavors are pretty bland and no authentic taste. No original items on menu. Pretty standard. We had burrito grande w steak and tostada salad with steak. Nothing "grande" about the burrito grande. Relatively small burrito compared to others I've had. Doesn't come with sour cream or guacamole either. They messed up order and gave us chicken when we ordered steak but the good thing was they made us another one. That was nice. The tostada salad comes in a nice tostada bowl. This seemed to be a better option than the burrito. Pretty decent steak portion. But that's extra so it comes to $16. Without meat it's $13. The service is unfriendly as other reviewers have said. It feels as if the staff don't want to be here. No smiles at all. The prices seemed a bit high for me for the quality of the food. We ordered the Green Cactus Combo, Birria Tacos, Burrito Fajita, and a Passionfruit Jarritos. The Birria Tacos and Burrito Fajitas both came with a side of chips. The Green Cactus Combo was good, and the portion was big. It also came with a tortilla. The steak was juicy and well-seasoned. The Burrito Fajita was flavorful and big. Our favorite item was the Birria Tacos. They were juicy and flavorful, and the cheese was a great addition. However, we do wish they served a bigger portion of the consomé. The price for our meal was pretty good. Overall, we would come back here for their Birria Tacos and to try their Horchata. read more

Green cactus used to be my fave, but it is so meh now. The service is rude, my favorite chicken burrito fajita is lacking, and there are no condiments available anymore. I have been going to GC for 25+ years now. The chicken ranchero taco with pinto beans X 2 tacos is one the best meals I've ever eaten. It's been consistently delicious - que saber!, que Rico! I love it. I don't know if there's been different owner's, etc over the years, I've even had the ranchero at the oakdale location when it was open - the ranchero has been amazing for years. The food was really good and the prices were fair for the Stony Brook area. I had the burrito vegetarian and it was absolutely delicious. I also ordered steak fajitas (she demolished those), chicken burrito grande (she inhaled it), burrito shrimp (she liked it but gave her huge avocado slices to me, which I loved), the taco primos are basically small tacos so if you want those maybe get a bowl (my daughter wasn't so pleased about that and had to get a second one). Our dear family friend was annoyed that they ran out of ground beef and couldn't quite get her alternate order right and our other friend got a wet burrito which she enjoyed. So everyone pretty much enjoyed their food. I was surprised however that since we ate in and hardly anyone was eating in (socially distanced) that we had to order chips and pico de gallo for the table- it should have been included. Every Mexican restaurant I've been to ever provides that to the table, especially considering we placed a very large order for 8 people. That was my only complaint. Best fish taco in Suffolk county. If there's somewhere better please do tell. The self fixing bar for sauces and pico de Gallo is fresh and delicious. Most importantly they have outdoor seating. One fine sunny day a few friends were looking for somewhere outdoors to enjoy a beer. Why is it so hard to find outdoor seating in Stony Brook?!? Painful. Anyway. The food is good, but they are incredibly stingy with their salsa. You basically have to beg them for sauce, and they ration it strictly to two small cups per customer. I'm willing to pay for extra salsa, but it's a major hassle because they always get confused or annoyed when you ask to pay for more salsa. This is a Mexican restaurant that heavily restricts how much salsa they give out, which is absurd because salsa is one of the main reasons people like Mexican food. Chips are good, but chips aren't a meal. And the guac? So bland that I had to mix in a salt pocket plus squeeze some lime into it (I got the large guac for an absurd $5.99 for 8oz). Green Cactus could be great, tonight was just ok. We stopped in and ordered a bunch of fish tacos. The tacos come out covered in a pile of fresh chips. I was expecting some fish but I look down and see something that looks like fish and its chopped up & breaded on our tacos. Frozen fish sticks and regret was just served to me on a plate. An array of unlimited salsas and pico de gallo await you in front and depending on what time of day you go, service is relatively fast. The food here is passable and in a nostalgic personal kind of way I enjoy it (though you could do much better for Mexican food). But portions are stingy and the eating area is dirty and smells like a public pool that's been peed in. On top of that staff here is so rude, as are all the clientele.
