This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area for the simple fact that it has the best food. It is all made fresh when you order, so you will wait a little bit longer for an order than you may be used to waiting for Mexican food -- especially when they are busy, but it is worth it. I like the "one foot burrito" and the chicken nachos. Either dish will fill me up, and I'm a big guy. They also offer a "taco primo" which is super tasty, but I would need to eat several to fill up so I usually just order one on the side to cap off a nice meal. Green Cactus is an okay fast food style Tex-Mex joint in a quaint strip mall location. If it was a bargain I would give it an extra star. It's kinda Pricey, the quality is good. The food is bland- However, I think that's due to the local pallet there's a salsa bar and hot sauce to spice it up. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here but if i wanted some Mexican food that didn't hurt my gut and I was in the area it's A-OK . Alrighty, I'm not sure what direction to start with. So lets begin with the bad. Veggies always before Desert mom always says.. And nobody likes the veggies. One thing I didn't like about the place was the staff. Now I get that they were probably Stony Brook college kids. And I get it, I was once there too... But lets put the phones away. Pokemon Go can wait. I walked in and there was no customers, but 2 out of the 4 or 5 staff I saw had a phone in their hands. I get nobody is there, but when you hear the door open to a customer, I think it would be respectful to put the phone away. I looked past it. Didn't care much to say anything. Second thing, The meals are all pretty basic, Nothing I tried was impressive to me. What really got my face to scrunch up was their guacamole, to me it tasted weird almost like old guac with newly added avocado. But on the flip side of everything, The place was VERY clean from what I could see. The Shrimp Burrito wasn't terrible tasting more shrimp would have been nice. I felt like I ate a Cabbage burrito with some cheese and a couple of shrimp. The Chicken quesadilla was alright (very cheesy). Nacho's were alright. They totally lacked content on them tho. It was mostly quac and sour cream with chips... which they give you plenty of. The drink selection was good. (I don't drink Soda, so the Iced tea machine is a nice difference). And the salsa bar was pretty neat. Unfortunatly I can't promise a return here yelpers. It's way to far north for me. I just happened to stroll by the area and decided to give Green Cactus a whirl. Eh. Ehhhhh. It's fine. Green Cactus is your basic tex mex and there is nothing special about it. It's kind of hard to screw up a burrito and I've never had any major issues with the quality or taste of the food. Although now that I'm really thinking about it the burritos are kind of watery... They also have been majorly skimping on the chips lately. C'moooon. Pros: You get to get your own salsa toppings, which allows me to get extra pico de gallo and they have containers that have lids and don't spill in my car. Cons: Staff is very unpleasant. I come here always to get the CHICKEN TORTA SANDWICH. so delicious. they make it fresh on the spot, so you usually need to wait 10+ minutes for the order. it comes with a side of free nachos - unsalted so you can dip into the free salsa provided. i got the steak torta before, but i didn't love it... maybe because i'm not much of a steak fan. but i definitely recommend you must try the chicken torta. read more

The nachos are horrendous, and the burrito I had is bland and tedious. Trust me, it's like eating frozen food products from the market. Come here very often for lunch and have tried all of their tacos and some burritos but have settled on the shrimp tacos...I can inhale them. Add on a few jalapenos and some of the hot salsa and I can't help myself. Even though their tacos are a little pricey compared to other Mexican joints, the taste / spiciness is just worth it. Not to mention, the chips and salsa are free and are very good. It seems as if they make everything to order so expect to wait ~10 mins depending on the size of your order. read more

Delicious and spicy! (Well, not really the latter.) The place is a cafeteria. So, it's not very appealing when you enter. But, most people just order out. If you just entered, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes, depending how much you order. The enchiladas are the best, especially with the cheese and sauce on top. This is Long Island, you're not going to find authentic Mexican food, this is about as close as it gets. It's a cut above the rest, ingredients are fresh, menu has a decent variety. It's definitely fast food or take out, interior is bare bones and rather generic. The food occasionally takes a bit longer than expected to prepare but I see this as validation to their claim that they make everything from scratch for each order. I have no idea how previous reviews rank Green Cactus lower than Salsa Salsa in Port Jefferson. One of the places near campus that I miss the most since I graduated. Sometimes the wait is a bit long, so I would definitely recommend ordering ahead of time, especially if you're hungry. Really good food though. Loved the soft tortilla tacos and the taquitos the most! Pollo or carne asada! :D I feel most of the menu is pretty great and one should definitely try whatever they like because I came over here so many times with friends and I never heard a bad review. Sometimes my friends would order the tortas or the nachos or the burritos or whatever else and everyone always enjoyed their food. No complaints so far. I also like the outdoor seating area in the summer. Been a customer since 1996 and I can say that the quality has rarely disappointed me (with rare occasional hiccups). It's fresh, quick, and no frills. Remarkably mediocre, tasteless and expensive (for what you get) pseudo Mexican food. In it's heyday this was a fun, cheap place with decent food. I had a laugh in looking at the plastic self serve cups of pico de gallo, which were, literally, half the volume (less?) than what I recalled of 15 years ago. The Chicken Quesadilla is the only good thing here. Even though the restaurant on a whole sucks, I will sometimes stop there just for the quesadilla. But that's it. I'm giving it a 3 because it's always clean, and my burrito usually taste really good. This time it's cold, and doesn't take like it usually does. Very strange because I go there once a while and this is the first time this has happened. Perfect North Shore place for Stony Brook University students and Head of the Harbor white people, who say stupid sh*t like "Mary, I can't believe this is 'the mild', it's got a real kick to it.. . " Bland as it is, its prepped by true mexicans, & has a free salsa bar. I like the Red Snapper (fishstick) tacos, but if my memory was clearer, Its likely I'd totally rip this place. . .. it's been a while, I can't remember specifics, & know that its not worth a special trip to remember what I didn't like. YUM! I love Green Cactus! Green Cactus is a better version of all of the burrito chains. The ingredients are fresh and delicious. Lets start with some apps. The nachos are great as are the jalapeño poppers. Now as for the entrees, everything I have had here has been great, but I really only get one of two things anymore because why mess with a good thing. The fish tacos are ohhhh myyyy goodness yummy! And the fish burrito is essentially a bigger version of the taco. I wouldn't typically order fish from this sort of a place, but my oh my this fish is absolutely delicious.
