It is lucky for them I like the food because the attitude of the counter person tonight makes me want to go elsewhere. I have been a customer for 10 years and have spent countless money at Green Cactus. They usually have a sullen, sorry to be there person at the counter. Tonight I spent 70.00 and they forgot the chips. I went back in and the counter guy had an attitude and argued that ,they gave me chips. They didn't. Reluctantly, after defending myself, the counter help capitulated and gave me chips. How cheap are they there? I'll tell you, I always have to buy a bag as the small free bag is enough for one. I went here to try something new, considering I'd just finished all of my final exams and was anticipating graduation. I decided that since I'd never been here before, I would try Green Cactus for some Tex Mex. I'll start by saying that if I could give zero stars, I absolutely would. This place is one of the worst places I've ever eaten at, in my entire life. I got a "wet burrito" (burrito topped with salsa and cheese with a side of sour cream). To begin with, my burrito contained beef and I was charged an extra $1.00 on top of the already $8.35 price for the burrito due to "volatility in the beef market." The rice was overcooked such that it turned to mush in my mouth, and felt like it was sitting there for days. The beans were undercooked and overcooked intermittently, as if no one had ever turned them. The quality of beef was extremely low, or maybe that was primarily due to the fact that the steak was overcooked (and thus extremely dry) and unseasoned in the burrito. The burrito itself was covered in this nasty salsa mush that tasted like it had been sitting in a can, open, for several weeks on end. It was rank, to say the least. The cheese on top of the burrito looked like plastic immediately upon being served, which was consistent with the fact that the burrito was not even warm when it was served. On the side, there was this horrendously disgusting salad with browning lettuce, topped with one tomato, and then sour cream on top of the "salad." (Who puts sour cream on a salad!?!) Overall, this place has nothing going for it in terms of taste. The place does, however, look kind of nice. Looks like they invested a lot on appearance, and very little on "quality," which they so claim to be important. I will never go back here again. Oh, by the way, I paid $28 for two burritos (both burrito grande steak) and a drink. Ridiculous. read more

If you've ever eaten at a Chipotle, DelFuego in St James, Oaxaca in Huntington or any other place that makes truly tasty tex-mex, you'll know how good it can be. The Green Cactus's Food is not bad, but it is not close to those other alternatives. To be fair we got take out, and by the time it got home it was cold (even though we live 2 minutes away!), but it was clear that even fresh it would have been a big disappointment. 2 minutes to Green Cactus, or 12 minutes to Del Fuego....a no brainer. The food is okay but the service sucks. One girl who works there during the evenings seems to have serious attitude problems. I ordered a veggie burrito and when I wanted to change the order from black beans to pinto, she rolled her eyes at me for some reason. The food is not worth it for the price they charge. read more

If you're looking for simple, but tasty Tex-mex at fair prices, then Green Cactus in Stony Brook is worth visiting. Although they claim to make most items fresh on the premises, the tortillas did not taste freshly made. The chicken Taco Ranchero was stuffed and well worth the price. The steak for the Asada was lightly seasoned/marinated and paired well with a side of rice and beans. Rice was perfectly cooked. The pico de gallo was fresh and I couldn't help but put it on everything. If you're looking for service with a smile or ambiance, then this is not the place for you. The indoor dining area is dimly lit despite the skylights and there is a noticeable mildew odor throughout. For some reason, neither the ceiling fans or the AC was running on an 85 degree day. The outdoor seating seemed like a better choice even though there were diners from the pizza place next door using half of the tables. read more

Other than the fish tacos food is so-so at best, and the portions are skimpy for the price...Put it this way, I can walk there in 10 minutes and I am happy to drive to spend more at Del Fuego when I want Mexican. Ridiculously yummy - the service is fast, I love the pico de gallo/salsa bar, and the food is fresh and delicious. My sister brought her friend from Texas here and he said it was 'pretty good'. This place was awful. I found more than 5 ants inside of my cup, and the food was terrible as well. I got the tacos, and they were appalling. I will never go back there again. Ever. My family got burritos, tacos, and quesadillas, and I do not think anyone enjoyed their meal. There was no meat in the quesadillas, the burritos and the tacos were both falling apart. The tacos were also way to greasy, and there was a pool of oil on the bottom of the tray. I would give it zero stars if I could. read more

The fish burrito is fresh and not to be missed. Best chips this side of the border: thin, crisp, and not coated with salt. The GCG salsa and others at the "bar" are tasty, and, again, not excessively salty. Also try the fish "burrito in a bowl." read more

The food isn't bad although the love doesn't seem to go into it the way it did when they first opened. The prices are high and the quality is good but it just lacking that little bit of something for me. The Salsa bar is pretty good. There isnt a whole lot of Mexican food out here to write home about. The food is decent and the inside is always pretty clean. The food is consistently good and the staff is pretty helpful albeit not that excited about what theyre doing. read more

I love coming here not only for the location (since I live about ten minutes walking distance away and I go to school a block from this place) but the food is great. My favorite order is the chicken or vegetable quesadilla which comes with tortilla chips and guacamole as well as a variety of other dips. There's a sidebar with an even larger assortment of different sauces, toppings and the like you can choose from. The price is more than affordable and I definitely recommend this place to anyone who has a taste for modern Spanish cuisine. read more
