After taking care of business at city hall and with some extra time on my parking meter, I decided to have a bite to eat. Hubby had a taste for a Gyro. Greek Kitchen popped up on my Yelp and so we gave it a try. Just a few people sprinkled here and there. The restaurant was very clean. The staff was wiping the railings. The toppings were prepped and well presented. The woman who prepared our handhelds was polite. The Gyro and falafel wraps were delicious! We were so pleasantly surprised! Very sad this place hasn't had many recent reviews and there are so many low stars from years back. Whatever happened, they turned it around because the food is absolutely smackin. I get Greek Kitchen delivered to my work through fooda - basically a corporate ordering app service. I've ordered from GK probably 4-5 times now and it has been consistently one of the best lunches/meals I get. The chicken kabob is extremely juicy and tender EVERY TIME. And remember this is through a delivery system so I usually get it around an hour or so after it has been prepared. It doesn't dry out at all and has tons of flavor. I've also gotten the steak & lamb (good) and shaved chicken (also good) but in my opinion the kabob is the way to go. The sides are great too. I usually opt for the rice, cucumber & tomato salad, Greek pickles, hummus, and recently I tried the spicy feta which was the perfect combo of spice and lavish cheese. So good. The serving sizes are awesome here - I rarely finish my entire plate, but it is great for those days when I'm especially hungry and need that extra protein (again, don't play around, get that chicken kabob). read more

I'm from Detroit, home of Greektown so my standards for Greek food can be moderate to high. I wasn't expecting much and it would set I was whelmed with my food. While I was very pleased with the size of my gyro, the construction was poor. All of the sauce was out on a single end of the gyro instead of put on to the pita directly. This resulted in an extremely dry gyro. The pita itself was fine, and the fries were fries. Overall, I'd say that if you're craving Greek, this is probably not a bad place to get something. But as far as going above and beyond l, and being a place that you would seek out, this is certainly not the place. They get credit for having a very clean and well decorated store though. Bottom of the barrel for the fast Greek delivery category in downtown Chicago. I've ordered from them about a dozen times now and they mess things up about 50% of the time. This is often a major gaffe like forgetting the "main" part of the plate (what's titled) when processing an order that includes paid extras. This has happened three times. In other situations, they will decide to pour sauce into the plate despite the instructions requesting "no sauce." The food here is a poor value. When ordering extra falafel, I usually get 2, while, for the same price, IDOF includes 4 or 5. Popular and quick service Greek during the downtown lunch hour. With a line that was 20 deep when I arrived in, I thought this was going to be an adventure and a satisfying meal. The line moves fairly quickly, as the menu setup is simple. All the meats and salads are just scoop ready for the servers so you just go through the queue to order. Options: Either a wrap or plate. With wrap - everything is wrapped up - sauces, hummus, veggies and meat. With the plate - everything is on a plate. Pretty simple eh? A bit of a disappointment is that they don't shave the gyro meat off the roasting spit or a freshly roasted sausage out of the broiler, but I get it...its lunch time - fast fast fast!. I tried the hummus and the baba ganoush, which was lacking in flavor. The rice tasted like it was mass-produced and out of a box, lacking much flavor. Gyro was just meh, but the sausage was a welcome surprise. Fill-your own fountain drink setup. It was fairly easy to grab a table - as I think the traffic flows through nicely. Its spacious enough not to feel cramped at lunch. Overall - it was not what I expected. The spinach salad was just OK. Basic. I wanted to get falafel (which is why I came in), but it looks as dry as a ball of fur roasting in the sun. Ironic because it was around lunchtime and there was no reason to have stale food. The bread was SUPER stale. FRESH GREEK I really think Chipotle has had an effect on the fast causal dinning experience. This place has taken the Chicago Style Gyro Sandwich to another level. Typical fast food gyros have one option and that's a pita sandwich only. This place allows you to get a sandwich, salad or a plate. What I like about this place is all of the options you can pick to choose with your meal. I decided to get my gyro as a salad. The guy grabbed romaine and I asked him for some spinach too. He looked at me like I wasn't suppose to do that but he didn't say no. I then had them add tomatoes, olives, red onion, spicy feta & cucumbers. The menu board was a little confusing. I asked the guy what else I could get on the salad and he pointed at the board and said anything. I then said how about some hummus and he told me that would be an extra charge. That is where my confusion was. I told the guy not to worry about it and skipped that option. I got the Greek Vinaigrette as a dressing. Then I saw the words spicy tahini and asked for a side of that. I love spicy. I was not a fan of the vinaigrette because it was a little bland. Instead I used the spicy tahini as a light dressing. It was amazing. There was also a pita on the side but I didn't eat that because I was trying to eat light and skip the carbs. I really liked this place. I loved having all of the fresh options and customization when making your food. I do wish the board was a little more descriptive. I was confused just looking up at the menu and the staff really did not take any time to explain it to me. They kind of stared at us and kept talking to each other. I kind of wished they would have asked if we needed help or walked us through the menu. Besides the lack of customer service the food was delicious and fresh. I will come back and next time I should be a pro at picking my food items off the menu. There are a few tables outside but you will not be in the sun. Yeah the tall buildings make a lot of shade. There are plenty of seats inside and the room is comfortable with nice booths. So if you are downtown and looking for a fresh Greek option then this is the place. Med Kitchen is now Greek (GRK) Kitchen. It's not a new place, it's been "re-branded". The food is pretty much the same with a couple small menu changes/additions. This place puts down a pretty good product, but it isn't quite at the level of Roti or Naf Naf in my opinion, which are both within a block of here. I stopped in here most recently because they were giving away free pita sandwiches for the re-launch, and to see if anything is markedly different. The meat has good flavor and they have more options than most places which is pretty sweet. No one else has spicy feta, which is awesome! The rice could have some more spice and pop in my opinion. One thing I'd recommend/comment on is that I'm not a fan of all the little extra charges. I like when I know what I'm paying for up front without needing to worry about paying extra for add-on's, like that spicy feta that's soo good. There are definitely worse places to eat at in the loop and if you're looking for solid-tasty gyro meat, this is your place for sure. The owner responded to my original comments surrounding the re-branding. He explained that it's not a sneaky move to revive the restaurant, or anything like that. They were awarded a space in Northwestern Hospital and it was suggested that the "Med" could be confused with Medical, so they relaunched with a new name. The other menu changes could be worth exploring, so I'll probably stop back to give GRK another go. read more

The chicken is flavored well, kind of dried out though. I like the wrap itself - it's tough and resilient similar to pita bread and never cracked or tore. The wrap held up well considering the moisture from the fillings. The wrap is pretty large. I don't think I needed the side of fries. They don't cut the wrap in half. We order delivery from GRK a lot, and it's one of my absolute favorite places to get lunch from. Their tzatziki is to die for, IMO. However, we ordered from here this week and received frozen tzatziki sauce sides and inedible salad (see pictures). Luckily this wasn't the only item I ordered for lunch...I also got a large portion of their egg lemon soup, which is also something I dream about on days we don't order from them. Bad day at the Med Kitchen. Offered up by a trade association as one of 8 neighborhood spots, we chose poorly. Ordered the Chicken Roti Wrap. The wrap was old and hard along the edges The chicken was chunky, overcooked and dry. I expected it to be thinly sliced and juicy as I saw the gyro style turning meat in the background. This meat was pre-sliced.. chunked, and sitting in a steam table pan. the cucumber, pickles, olives and sauce were good... but overwhelmed by the two main ingredients noted above. I stopped by their website this morning to send a note but the contact page offers only a fax number.. no email... they don't seem to want to hear from people. There are loads of fine , inexpensive , eateries in the neighborhood. This is not one you need to try. This marks my first BAD review. read more

I was craving a gyro in a bad way and decided to try this place since it was close by. Never again! Pita was dry and not warm. Meat was dry and lacked flavor. Our order of Greek fries was old and cold. We asked for new fries and it seemed like they just mixed the old and new together. My husband could not even finish his. OK, ignore the first reviewer. They are clearly employed by the restaurant. I had lunch at Med Kitchen today. I got there at 1pm and there was no line. I ordered the Steak Pita and a side of falafel ($10.59 includes tax). The Steak sandwich was actually generously piled high with thick cuts of somewhat greasy meat. The toppings were a little skimpy however and the pita was more of a greasy flat bread. But it was a filling sandwich. The falalfel, with side of Tahina (i think) was pretty bad. It wasn't "Roti" bad, but it was pretty tasteless. And at $3.50, it was a total rip-off. Go to Taza if you are looking for a decent Falafel. My Falafel were cold also. Falafel should be eaten hot and fresh, or not at all. The place was very clean (big plus) and the people were nice, but I don't think I would rush back. I will go back at some point, but I won't go out of my way. Place deserves 2.5 stars but I'm going 2 because of the bull$hit first rating. read more

A cross between Roti and I Dream Of Falafel. There is that same "assembly line" dynamic that has become commonplace thanks to Chipotle. Falafel plate. Hummus. Baba ganoush. Rice. It was all good and quick, and I mean every word of it. To keep from holding up the queue, I ordered in a rush fashion and didn't get to see if there was anything on the board that made the restaurant more Greek than just catch-all Mediterranean. And the take-away offerings were smaller than the dine-in plates I saw other customers with. Nice service. Reasonable price. Good taste, although the hummus and baba ganoush were runny. Med Kitchen offers a healthy lunch/dinner alternative with fresh foods and great taste. It's a build your own meal kind of joint, with options of sandwiches (pitas), salads, or 'plates'. The choices are authentic for Mediterranean cuisine and there are a ton of options. Sure its not the most amazing Greek food, but it's a good substitute. I went here with a friend for lunch and we both enjoyed our meals. Service was fast and friendly, but it was very 'in your face' and 'hurry up and order' once you got to the cooks. Omg this place is super awesome. it's perfect for lunch, and its super clean and has great food. We tried the gyros platter and the chicken kebob platter. Both are delicious, I loved the tzatziki sauce and the orzo pasta. The hummus was rather a let down, but they have a killer orangini drink that comes in a cool bottle that I like. Im going to use the bottle to make a vase for flowers. The place doesn't have a great ambience, but it has high cielings, is super clean, and the staff is helpful. Had to spend the day at Northwestern Medicine with different tests. Went into Greek Kitchen @ 12:04 PM because I was hungry and ordered the Gyros and fries. Sat down to eat my lunch. Fries were really good. The gyro was, without a doubt, the WORST gyro I ever had the misfortune to bite into (and I have had MANY gyros in my 76 years). It was dry, tasteless, overcooked and even with the other items that go with a gyro could not help it. I feared that the staff would be different and that the credit I was due from being overcharged would be null and void as it was from the former establishment. This is a great place for lunch if you don't want crappy stuff like McDonalds, or having to spend $20 on something decent. Med Kitchen falls right in the middle. Quick, easy, cheap and best of all - its good! You build you own sandwich and when i was there I had a sandwich with gyros meat, Diced Tomatoes & Cucumbers, Spicy Feta (Tirokafteri) and Hub's Tzatziki. My only complaint was that they put ALOT of tzatiki on my sandwich, which made it almost too rich. I ended up only eating half and bringing the rest home. The falafel is just ok, its kind of fluffy and sweet, which is not what you want in falafel. Skip it. I am definitely coming back here whenever I need lunch downtown. read more

Chicken Kabob! Yes, I love coming here to have chicken kabob. One plate costs $7.25 and comes with two giant skewers of chicken kabob that's right off the grill. With your plate you get rice or pasta and some pita bread. I added some tahini sauce and loaded it up with some onions and veggies for a delightful snack. Lines at Med Kitchen are reasonable and the place is very clean - reminds me of the Chipotle of Mediterranean food. I also had a lot of difficulty understanding the staffing when they were asking what toppings I wanted on my plate. So glad I found this place through friends. Such a better alternative to Roti and Chipotle. Better quality, fresher food, but same concept as Roti and Chipotle, you start with a plate or sandwich or salad, choose your meat and other toppings. Great Greek food, fresh ingredients, good amount of meat and yummy pita bread. Chicken kabob and steak are delicious. Egg lemon soup is also good but overly lemon-y on the day I first tried it. Staff is hit or miss, some are friendly, some barely speak English, others are in a hurry to get you through the mad rush assembly line that happens during lunch. Even if the line is long, which it usually is, it moves pretty fast. Pretty large seating area for a place in the Loop. A plate will run you about $9. I'm a fan and will be back. read more

I love Greek food. I grew up with Greek neighbors and spent many an evening and holiday (Greek Easter!) at their place, enjoying incredible food. When I moved to Chicago back in 1996 I was thrilled to discover a string of nice restaurant and cheap eateries in Greek Town. It is the one part of the city I travel to more than any other for food. And the other day I had a hankering for some gyros, but I had a short lunch break and walking to Greek Town was out of the question. A quick Google search turned up GRK Greek Kitchen, so I thought I would check it out. Now, I will say, that the food was decent. It was not great, but it was not bad, either. I was a bit disappointed that they did not have on the menu a ready to order gyros plate. This is one of those places where you pick your dish, first your base (such as rice or pasta), then your meat, then your toppings. And that is fine. In fact, that is pretty spiffy as it allows easy customization of dishes. But, I would expect any Greek place to have a gyros plate option on the menu. That is not too much to ask, I think. I ended up just getting gyros meat (a bit on the dry side) with onions, olives, and feta cheese. As a side I got Greek fries and a pita. I had to pay for the pita. It did not come with the dish. And when the young lady was preparing the fries she could not find the lemon juice and instead of saying anything to me about it just closed the container and passed it over to the cashier. Yeah, not good customer service. At least apologize for not having the lemon juice. Also, no tzatziki was included. Apparently in this Greek place if you order gyros you have to ask for tzatziki sauce. What is up with that? The fries were really good, despite no lemon juice. Everything else was decidedly average. And that is OK. I am fine with average food. But not at nearly $14. Granted, the Greek fries were $3.50, or something like that, but still, nearly $14 for an average lunch? Not cool, bro. In closing I will say that I did stay up almost all night thinking about this lunch experience, most of which time was spent on the toilet, contemplating the unpleasantness of a lunch that goes right through you and spends more time coming out the back side than it did going in through the entrance. Everything I have eaten in the past three days was stuff I eat all the time. This was the only thing new to my diet these past few days and my body wanted nothing to do with it. I will NOT be repeating. If you are close enough to go here do yourself a favor and take the time to walk over to Greek Town and get something better. Oh, one last thing. Within minutes of having paid (with my debit card) I got an email from some company called SpringRewards, informing me that my account was credited for the cost of my lunch, as part of some rewards program. This was disturbing as I have never signed up for SpringRewards, have never given them my email address, and did not give my email address to the cashier at this place.
