Tried a bait and switch on me once, but I wasn't in the mood and called him on it. Another time the shop was slow and he was trying hard to sell me a new bike, but seemed offended when I casually mentioned I preferred Campagnolo Super Record instead of Dura Ace -especially if I am spending that kind of money. Overall, I still go there when I need something as the prices and selection are good and a lot of the other closer shops in town either don't service/supply road bikes and parts (Go Ride) or have some serious attitude (Guthries and Pretender....uh, I mean Contender).

After going to a corporate e-bike store and a specialty E-bike store, I was directed to Guthrie Bicycle Shop on 2100 St. I walked into a modern, well-decorated shop on the 26th of December and was promptly greeted by Preston Jacobsen. He looked at the pictures on my phone and went on a hunt for a part he thought would fit (an older, out-of-production brake lever clamp). In the 15 minutes it took him to look in about ~20 parts drawers, he showed me around the workshop until we had a eureka moment at the bottom of one of the last drawers we checked. He had two, and gave me one, refused to take any money for it, and thanked me for sharing the story of my bike shop experiences back east and their long history in SLC. Only later, when I asked for a card, did I note that he was the owner. That type of service to a guy who will most likely not buy a bike from him (I live in Hawaii) is what makes independent bicycle shops like this a true gem in a world of chains and corporate clones. Hi, I recently…read morebrought in two bikes for your $90 tune-up and picked them up on 09/14/26. Unfortunately, I don't believe the work was completed as expected. Both bikes came back still dusty and clearly hadn't been wiped down, and I had to clean the frames myself. The chains also weren't lubricated. More importantly, my wife's bike is shifting worse than before. Front shifts from the small ring to the big ring were a little harsh before, and they're noticeably rougher now. Before the tune-up, it only had normal chain rub when cross-chaining at the extremes (small-small and big-big). Now it rubs in the big ring across the four largest rear cogs.

Most shops have a process and can spit out a price within a couple minutes for this. Once the order was placed they were in contact with me, advised me of next steps, and shipped my bike out very quickly. When it arrived, it was packaged exceptionally well and completely flawless, and it was assembled about as far as it could be for shipping. About 30 minutes later I was riding. What really made them standout was the after-sale service. I'll admit I took a few tries to get my saddle height correct, partially due to the seat post slipping. In the process of readjusting, I ended up stripping the seat post wedge bolt. I emailed them back, and both Peter and Andrew responded, and had a replacement part as well as carbon paste dispatched to me almost immediately. This is despite them knowing that I'm out in CA and pretty much guaranteed not to have my bike serviced there. That level of customer support is almost unheard of now and a true testament to how devoted they are to the customer experience. Whether you are local to them or online, I can't recommend Contender Bicycles enough, and I can confidently say I will be buying all my bikes and cycling gear from them from now on.
