I was visiting SLC for the Christmas holiday week, and broke an odd part on my friend's e-bike that holds a power button. After going to a corporate e-bike store and a specialty E-bike store, I was directed to Guthrie Bicycle Shop on 2100 St. I walked into a modern, well-decorated shop on the 26th of December and was promptly greeted by Preston Jacobsen. He looked at the pictures on my phone and went on a hunt for a part he thought would fit (an older, out-of-production brake lever clamp). In the 15 minutes it took him to look in about ~20 parts drawers, he showed me around the workshop until we had a eureka moment at the bottom of one of the last drawers we checked. He had two, and gave me one, refused to take any money for it, and thanked me for sharing the story of my bike shop experiences back east and their long history in SLC. Only later, when I asked for a card, did I note that he was the owner. That type of service to a guy who will most likely not buy a bike from him (I live in Hawaii) is what makes independent bicycle shops like this a true gem in a world of chains and corporate clones. I went in to have my tire converted from tube to tubeless. The guy informed me that the rim was good for it, but not the tire-it was too weak & would need a tubeless tire. I had the rear one done in Bozeman on the same tire type & they didn't say anything.. Just had tube replaces and learned something new. Thanks Guthrie's... Super adorable shop dog too. Worth a look. This shop is easily accessible and has plenty of parking. They have a good selection of top-end, full-suspension Santa Cruz bikes, and even Juliana (women's) mountain bikes ... which was unexpected and cool. Shop is clean, well laid-out and without cluttered displays so you can actually look at components. The staff seems friendly and ready to help you get into the sport, though this does not appear to be a shop that can immediately accommodate budget or entry-level hard tail buyers. But don't let that stop you! I'm sure they can order anything, and it's clear they're successful in this business. Again, if you're serious about getting into he sport, I would recommend a stop here. read more

Seriously love this place! I'm a patron of their Bountiful location and have been SO happy with them! They are always willing to take time to educate me and help me understand how to use and care for my bike. I'm an avid road biker (ride between 70-100 miles a week) but have mostly fumbled my way through this for years. Some bike shops have a reputation similar to computer shops back in the day. Where when you walk into the shop you are made to feel like an idiot and inferior to the store employee. Unless you are dropping thousands of dollars each visit, you aren't worth talking to. Guthrie is the perfect example of this type of shop. I broke a part on my mountain bike and the manufacturer had a crash replacement option. The manufacturer required you to go through your local dealer, which Guthrie was the closest dealer to me. I took my part to Guthrie a few working days before Christmas for them to make the claim. Long story short, Guthrie took over two weeks to ship the package.. Even after telling me they had shipped the part. I was given attitude when trying to find out why shipping the part took so long. Luckily I was able to contact the manufacturer who was great about escalating the claim and shipped the part in time for a trip I had already planned. Guthrie is very unprofessional, unreliable, and has poor customer service. Without me calling to follow up and going into the shop this process would have easily taken around a month to complete. If this type of service is acceptable to you, then this is the perfect shop for you. read more

Until my visit in September of 2022, I had always been impressed with the service received from Guthrie bicycle. in early September I took my E bike in for a tune. It was a new bike with approximately two hundred miles on it and the original riding had stretched and in a couple of cases broken rear spokes. Guthrie has a notice posted for the price of a pro tune of $120. I thought this was reasonable and had paid the posted prices on previous visits. When the bicycle was returned there was a surcharge of $60 for it being an E bike. The pro tune involved no interface whatsoever with the electrification of the bike. There was no posted disclosure of the surcharge, nor was it verbally explained to me prior to the service. This is an unethical and deceptive practice on the part of Guthrie. There has been a shift away from fair treatment and customer service. After being a regular customer for several years I will seek an alternative source for my cycle purchases and service. read more

They provided great service and advice for repairing my kid's bike! My son was planning to go riding around town with his friends today so we made sure his bike was ready to go last night - added a little air to the tires and it seemed fine. But about an hour later the rear tire was completely flat. It was too late to take it anywhere last night so I took it to Guthrie first thing this morning. I thought they opened at 9am so I got there about 9:10. Should have checked Yelp first because they actually open at 9:30. I sat down in front of the store prepared to wait for 15-20 minutes. They must have seen me because almost immediately they came and opened the door and said to come on in. I told the guy I had a flat and I had no idea how to fix it. He gave me several options based on the condition of the tire and tube and didn't try to pressure me into anything. I asked what he would do - new tube and some sealant, existing tire still had some life left in it - so I said that would be great. It took him about five minutes to complete the repair and I was actually walking out right about 9:30 when they would have normally opened up! Thanks Guthrie! Different than the grand majority of bike shops; my first attempt to call Guthrie Bicycle was answered by only a somewhat down "Hello." Followed by his later answering to my question ---- (in the young male's tone of voice wanting to prove) that the customer's call only distracted his mindset from what else he was thinking/doing, before the call came in. His phone answering proving that Guthrie Bicycle being the most incompetent (going by mindset/tone of voice) bike shop that has picked up the phone from me. read more

I recently purchased a Trek Earl bicycle from Guthrie's and I just had to share what a delightful experience I had working with these guys. For those of you who do not know, the Trek Earl is a city bike - it has thinner tires than a mountain bike and is meant for roads and pavement. It is also a single speed which can be converted into a fixed gear (like the BMX you had as a kid where you had to continuously pedal even while coasting down hills). It is an entry level bike priced at around 450.00 but perfectly suited for my needs which is jetting around town, attending concerts, art shows, and yes - YELP events. Anyhow, a friend of mine had seen this same bike at the downtown Salt Lake Bicycle company. I work close to Guthrie and had heard some great things about this shop so I put in the call and spoke with the owner, Rich. He said he would price match the competitor's price. I went in and put some money down and started the ordering process. I went in on a Thursday and was told the bike might come in on Saturday and then be assembled and ready to pick up on Monday. I was under the assumption it was Saturday of the following week. Much to my surprise I received a phone call on the VERY NEXT DAY, Friday, and was informed my bike had arrived and was ready to pick up. In case you haven't been keeping track this is a ONE DAY turnaround time. Unbelievable. Guthrie's will also perform free regular maintenance on my bike for the next year. How awesome is that? The store itself is very clean, organized, and there are bikes aimed at every level of rider with bikes ranging between several hundred dollars to several thousand. Like any retailer, Guthrie's rapes you on accessories. I ordered a helmet and pump thru Amazon at a fraction of the cost. I would have given Guthrie 5 stars except for the fact the sales guy I worked with when I picked up the bike didn't really seem that enthusiastic about answering my basic questions. I haven't owned a bike in almost two decades so my queries might have seemed mundane and simplistic, but to me my questions were relevant. In addition, my bike doesn't have a quick release on the front tire and I needed some instruction on how to remove the tire to fit it into my car. Upon some prodding he finally agreed to show me how to do this. The shop wasn't that busy when I picked up my bike. Despite the fact some of the sales guys aren't really sales people and merely bike nuts who work in a shop - which explains the lack of people skills, the owner of the shop, Rich, was totally awesome. He was energetic, and thorough, and made sure I was happy with my purchase. read more

I spent the last year working out at the gym inside stale air that smelled like a locker room where people never wiped down the machines after they were done. Not no more. The partner forced me, did I say forced me? to get a bike so we could ride together now that he's back in SLC. Well, after much weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth, I succumbed and gave in to his incessant nagging. Damn him. I remembered how much I used to love biking. And now I ride more than he does. Got a CAAD9. But you want to know why I bought the bike from Guthrie and not from one of the many other shops in town, huh. Many moons ago I stupidly let a friend ride my Klein mountain bike. This guy wasn't so smart and in the middle of the street on Staten island in NY he grabbed the front brake lever to stop at a traffic light and flew straight over the handle bars. The bike went flying as far as he did and when it landed it bent the rear drop out (that's the place where the derailleur is attached to the bike). The Klein being an aluminum bike back when they were something special had to be sent back to Gary Klein to be fixed. The good people at Guthrie worked out the entire process for me back then so I already trusted them to keep up the good work almost two decades later. They did. I love my new Cannondale and I ride it every day--I did my first hundred miles in the first week. And now why I love these guys even more! Sometime in the 6 weeks of riding this bike all over SLC, a flaw in the front derailleur appeared and caused a hairline crack that prevented the mechanics from adjusting the shifting for more than a day. By the 6th time I showed up to get it adjusted, they replaced the derailleur and upgraded it to the next better model. Now if they would install an espresso machine. read more

I got my bike here some time ago and spaced the review. As a bike shop goes, it is decent, but not what I would call great (only Contender would get that title from me, currently). Selection is ok, service is a bit iffy and staff could have been considerably more helpful. I was/am relatively happy with the bike, but at somewhere down the line, I'll probably have to get another do things more the way I was hoping this would. A good discussion would have helped that considerably and while I don't object to having a decent amount of bike tire-changing, tuning and general modding experience specific to this model, I think I would have been happier if it had been set up better out of the store. I guess if I was shopping for a bike, I'd probably go there to look to see if they had anything interesting, but it wouldn't be my first stop and I wouldn't be rushing to go specifically there. read more

Everyone here is great! Nick has a big beard and loves chicken coops and I have never seen him wearing socks. Mikey will give you a massage and then try to pull an arm bar. Todd is cool I guess. I have bought one bike and tons of everything else you could think of here. They are the definition of local and honest. What an amazing bike shop. These guys have been around for a long, long time (since 1888!). My wife was looking for a new bike and worked with Preston over the period of about a month to find the right one. Preston had her come in, took a bike off the shelf and spent about two hours switching seats, stems, and handlebars to make sure the bike would fit her. And we hadn't even purchased anything yet. He measured her old bike's geometry and compared it to the new bike and made all sorts of adjustments to ensure the proper fit. I can't say enough good things about these guys. Rich, the owner is a class act and very friendly. Whether you're looking for a $5 bike part or a $5,000 bike, they'll treat you right. read more

The first star is for general atmosphere. I've only been in the shop 3 times but each time I've appreciated the atmosphere. I love the location and convenience of the store. It's always clean, and put together. I can find anything I'm looking for without asking. Everyone is always in a great mood. The second star is for the staff's helpfulness and knowledge. So I didn't ask a lot of questions, but I was paying attention to how they interacted with customers. Everyone looked pleased with their help and answers. Oh and you know when a place is required to suggest things to go with your purchase, you know how annoying that is right, well I don't know if they require it here but I liked they way they did it when I was in. The third star goes to my experience. I loved being in this shop. I could browse carefree and know what I could get my questions answered at anytime without anyone being pushy. Since the first time I went in, I haven't gone to another shop. I love the adorable dog that wanders the store. The fourth star goes to the bang for my buck. I didn't feel like I pay giving my child's college tuition to the store when I purchased items. I also appreciate that they weren't carrying low end crap that I could get at Walmart. The fifth and final star goes to them for going above and beyond. I was looking for an oddly sized tire (I guess companies are moving away from it? Lame.) and the guy helping me find it searched the back till he found the size and not only the size but a decent tread for the MTN biking I planned to use it for. I've had nothing but good experiences with this shop so far. First off, I got a good deal on a new bike that they held for me even though those particular bikes were getting a lot of attention.Second, and more important to me is that they genuinely seem to be doing it out of love for riding. I've gone in several times just to chat with them about things I'd like to improve on the bike and they're always willing to take time, even when they're busy, to give me expert advice. Even when I'm asking about used parts I didn't buy from them, they are totally willing to troubleshoot and improve instead of try to sale me something.Finally, I feel like they do good work even though I've only had them do a tune up for me. It was a small bit of work but their attention to detail seemed good to me so I'll feel more comfortable bringing them a bigger issue if I run into something beyond my bike fixing skill set.Bottom line is that they're a friendly team of experts, there to facilitate fun riding. read more

Several people told me to give these guys a try. So I keep going in and keep getting a very below-average experience. I tried buying a bike from them, but my sub-$3,000 price point didn't seem to impress them and it was hard to keep the sales-guys attention (on a very quiet afternoon, no less). They are close to my house so I went back in for a few parts, some advice and some supplies. I received inconsistent to inaccurate information and was even given the wrong part that I had to return and exchange - which was also a bit of a hassle. I rode in there on a rust primer colored old schwinn cruiser that I borrowed from my girlfriend. When I came through the door, the two guys at the counter were chatting, they took a look at the bike, made a quick judgement, never made eye contact with me, never said a word and continued their conversation. I strolled around for 10 seconds, quickly browsed their inventory and left. Little did they know that I was in town visiting before moving to SLC and was looking for my what could be my new "local bike shop" to give business to . Substantial amounts of business as I have been riding, racing and working with bikes as a mechanic and messenger for years. First thing we were taught (in the shop my GF and I both worked in ironically) was "never judge the person by the bike they are riding -all are customers and all deserve respect." I have not been back. That was June of 2004. I will admit that I went into the Guthries that was downtown once and received decent service, although they were pretty expensive. read more

Once again (and sadly) the chain has provided better customer service than the local mom and pop shop. This morning I popped in with a question about my fork lockout. It had stopped working. The worker looked scathingly at me (probably because my bike didn't cost more than a slightly used car) and told me flat out they couldn't help. The fork would need to be sent back to Rockshox for repair. I put my bike in the car headed to the chain down the street Performance Bicycle and within 5 minutes had left with a working fork...lockout and all. I have not been on a bicycle since I was a little kid. When my husband suggested getting bikes for our move to Cali I was a little hesitant but after a little persuading we went hunting. I was shocked at how rude some of the local shops are here in SLC. Guthrie's was like a breath of fresh air. Awesome bike shop. Went to buy a pedal wrench then realized I would use it so infrequently I shouldn't bother. But, I needed to replace my bike pedals. The folks there said to just bring the bike in and they would do it. Of course I knew they could do the work but I wanted to be able to removed pedals for a future bike trip. They recommended I buy a multi-tool appliance that had the hardware I would need. Did that, brought in my bike, and they put the pedals on in a few minutes for no charge! Great customer service.
