Well...Jeff has lost 200 dollars from me at minimum... Jeff--I believe that's the name of the business owner and I were talking about our cats and then he suddenly paused...before saying something extremely racist. To be clear, I am white. I believe the hesitation was to consider if it was "safe" to make the joke that he did. The shop is not a large space and I did not want to lose my temper and escalate anything, so I pretended to laugh and told him I needed my relatives' approval before buying anything. Well. I have a lot of racist relatives. They would defend this man. I won't. I will not give him money, theirs, mine, or anyone else's. It's sad to hear a local business owner and operator, otherwise welcoming, kind and polite, talk like that because it undoes his kindness--he's only willing to show it to people who look like he does. It's disturbing because this is not the screaming, overt racism of domestic terrorists and our government of 2026. it's insidious. It's literally in our mom and pop next door local businesses. I'm not going to repeat what he said. Doubtless, he has many excuses for it. I hate buying new glasses. Too many years of feeling like I was being taken to the bloody cleaners in Connecticut, Mexico, St. Louis MO, Chicago....many years/many prescriptions as I aged. Oye. So I enlisted my kind husband to be my secondary mirror to go buy a pair of NEW (egad, the last time I got new glasses in MA I had to return them for a refund...they were a mess making me a mess too). And saw Jeffrey. His kindness, his questions asking me about issues no one--no doctor, no optician had ever asked about. YIKES. BEST optician in 7 countries I've lived in. Though to be fair, I was younger and without glasses often in some of those countries. So thanks Jeffrey. Jeffrey is the best. I just read all the reviews and I can't add anything more than the superlatives that exist here already. The selection is wonderful, and the prices are very reasonable. Jeffery really cares about his customers and is highly skilled at what he does. He's a very smart and interesting person as well. Just got my first pair of progressives and he said he picked a lens specifically for first time wearers. I have a very strong prescription and I learned a lot about how to pick a frame from Jeffrey. I'm only sorry I don't need more glasses and don't have a need to go back right away! I bought glasses with the best scratch resistant coating that they sell. Within only a few months they were scratched. Before the year was up, I had the lenses replaced. Same problem. After one year, they are currently so scratched that they need to be replaced again. I only ever use those special eye glass cloths and NEVER without BJs lens cleaner. I don't think their scratch resistant coating is very effective. I never had this problem when buying glasses elsewhere. read more

After struggling for over a year to find the right prescription in the right frames (including progressives that just didn't work) I discovered Jeff. I can't recommend him highly enough. He is not only an expert in his field, but he truly cares about his clients, & takes the time to show it. He explained to me that in fact there are over a thousand different types of progressives--& he was able to figure out which ones were likely to work for me. (They have.) I have one eye that is extremely nearsighted and need three different pairs of glasses to get around. For years local opticians told me they would have to charge extra for my lenses. They have then been quoting me extremely high prices for something as simple as a pair of reading glasses. So I have been ordering glasses online for quite a while. There is a long wait and the frames are often not what I expected. I have also had quality issues which, though resolved, add to the time it takes me to get my glasses. So was a pleasant surprise to discover that I could buy very nice glasses near home at Great Specs. Not only can I now try on the frames before I buy them, but once I selected some frames for some new computer glasses, Jeff, the owner, was able to make them for me while I waited. The whole thing didn't take more than 20 minutes. Not only that, but the price he charged me was remarkably low. Much better than what I would have paid for the same glasses at even B.J.s, or Costco. In fact, the price was about the same as what I'd pay online. This was also true when he made me a single lens for an old pair of glasses where only one eye's prescription had changed. The selection at Great Specs was excellent. I look awful in heavy plastic frames and was very glad to see that he still had lots of wire rims in different materials, including some surprisingly inexpensive titanium frames. Jeff makes outrageous rimless glasses, too. He showed me some custom ones he had made in very creative shapes, including one pair made in the shape of the Apple logo. My wife and I went to Great Specs on the advice of our optometrist. He told us that he got his glasses at Great Specs and that Jeff Bostian was a true artist when it came to crafting eyewear. Since we both liked what our doctor was wearing, we drove to Northampton (from Glastonbury CT) to give Jeff a shot. We were both amazed! We walked in wanting rimless glasses and Jeff spent over 2 hours with us, suggesting different frames, helping us determine the style and making sure the shape of the glass complemented our faces. Jeff gets his lenses from the most reputable dealers and then grinds and shapes them to fit the frames. I have a wide face and when he saw that, he took the shape of lenses he had on, stretched them to fit my face and now I have a customer pair of glasses that fit so well, I can hardly tell I have them on my face. My wife's glasses are so flattering and all but disappear on her face that the only way you can tell she's wearing glasses is by seeing the side stems. If you are looking for a serious pair of custom glasses that you will absolutely love, you MUST visit Great Specs. We're telling our families and friends that it is worth the drive. I stopped by because the right temple of my glasses (on cheap frames I got elsewhere) had broken off. He spent time looking through boxes of old spare frames to see if he could find a similar color and style of temple to swap in, because the pin that sheared off was not repairable with glue. Although I opted not to fix them, but to go back to the other place to ask for a replacement pair, the information he gave me about WHY the temple broke off, plus his willingness to work to repair them instead of trying to sell me new glasses, were both great indications of how he does business! read more

This is the Ollivander's Wand Shop of opticians. All kinds of frames everywhere, and Jeff knows which ones are right for you. He glanced at me and handed me a pair that looked great, then got out lots of other choices for me to look at, too. I'm hard to fit, but he had a lot of choices for a small face. I went half an hour before closing, and Jeff was still there when I left, over an hour later, helping the last customer. The shop is very small, so there's not a lot of room for a lot of people, but he makes the best of the space. read more

Great service, unusual frame selection, unbelievable personal service. I was in town for a family emergency and needed new glasses. Jeff helped me find the perfect frame quickly, gave me good advice on different lens features, then carefully measured all aspects of my eyes (much more than the big box stores ever do). I recently got my second pair of glasses from Great Specs and I am truly delighted. The frame and fit are great, but it's the clarity that has me delighted! With myopia, the need for progressive lenses, plus a bad astigmatism, I always hope to find an optician who really knows what he's doing, and Jeff does. I went in on a busy day (he is alone in the shop) and had fun with an eclectic group, all trying frames and commenting on others', or picking up their glasses. Jeff worked well with all of us, and made sure each of us was happy with our choices, giving each of us the time we needed. He and I talked about what was important to me in frames (appearance and durability) and then decided what kind of lenses I would like.
