[Out of Towner Review]…read more If a bookstore felt like a HUG, this would be it! I loved visiting this special independent bookstore in Grand Rapids. I love when you walk in you are greeted with the 100 Banned Books to peruse through. I love a business that highlights banned books, as all booksellers should be doing this year. Although I felt like the selection was limited, I wasn't upset with this store. It just took me a little longer to find a book to purchase. I loved all the knickknacks (stickers, bags, etc) they had to shop from. The kind bookseller was helpful when I asked for help. She was completely open to offering suggestions, but I felt capable of finding something else. She was extremely kind and engaging with the few patrons that were in the store. Since I this was my first time here, I was taking it all in. The kid section was really cute and the layout is easy to shop. I enjoyed the staff picks and layouts of the different sections. They are on the smaller side, so I wouldn't expect to show up and find every single top book on the market. But there are PLENTY that I found enjoyable and enough to purchase two books! Small town charm, but make it books!

I think it's a really great addition to the area, and a nice place to pop in if you're waiting for a table at a nearby restaurant or walking in this area. The vibe inside is a bit moody and dark but I like the big window in front. It was decorated with origami cranes when I was there. The selection of books I saw was varied and I think they stock something for everyone. The owner Lea was very kind and chatted with me a bit about her background. I always love learning about business owners so that was really nice. I particularly liked the non-book items like puzzles, tote bags, locally made pins, cards, handmade mugs, and more. I'll definitely be visiting again in the future for gifts for myself and others!

The owner had been kind and helpful throughout my visit and answered the questions I had. She provided additional information as well since I am new to the area and she was able to make helpful local suggestions! Anything not in her physical store you can order directly through her online store - https://goldenhourbookshop.square.site/ for delivery or pick-up and I have already requested a couple titles. So excited to have a local bookseller to go through instead of the online retailers! The prices are fantastic and in line with many other places for the same titles so you can really feel good about supporting this local, small business. Her mystery books are a total delight! Sometimes I get choice fatigue and being surprised is all I want. There is a non-spoiler description on the back to help you have a hint to what the book is inside. The wrapping this bookshop does on these is just exquisite! Comes with all sorts of bookmarks and spot savers that are beautifully high quality, I can't get over it. Visit! You will not be disappointed you stopped in here. Categories for Kids, Young Adults and Adults so there is something to find for all age groups here!

My first visit was today after we left the Tulip Time Festival, and with the entire downtown area absolutely bustling, stumbling across this shop felt like discovering a quiet little retreat in the middle of the chaos. I wasn't always certain about the pricing or exactly where some of the different genres and subjects were tucked away throughout the store, but honestly, that became part of the charm. There's something nostalgic about wandering through aisles, scanning shelves, and unexpectedly finding something interesting you didn't even know you were looking for. One thing I especially appreciated was the atmosphere created by the staff. The sales team was friendly and welcoming without hovering or making the experience feel uncomfortable in any way. They greeted us warmly, then simply allowed us the freedom to explore at our own pace. No one trailed behind us from aisle to aisle, no one pressured us into buying anything, and there was never that awkward feeling that you were being watched while trying to quietly enjoy the books that caught your interest. Instead, it felt relaxed and genuine -- the kind of bookstore experience where you can lose yourself for a while flipping through pages, rediscovering old interests, and taking your time deciding what deserves a closer look. It was really enjoyable to spend some time browsing and getting a feel for the stock they carry. The whole place has a warm, old-school bookstore atmosphere that's becoming harder and harder to find these days.
