As some of my dear readers know, I am a sucker for old-school Chinese restaurants in small Midwestern towns. Great Hunan checks all the boxes on providing a great meal along with timewarp aesthetics and ambiance. We got the vegetable chow mein ($9) which features lightly cooked vegetables in a clear sauce along with crispy noodles. It's a tasty dish. The curry tofu ($9.75) is even better, with deep fried tofu in a fragrant, colorful sauce. This is the type of dish you see more often on vanishing Cantonese menus, but the Upper Midwest still has a good number of places with this dish. The braised tofu ($9.75) is a savory dish with tons of bamboo shoots and peapods in a light sauce. Great Hunan is one of the only Chinese restaurants in Winona and it's great. Check it out. read more

Wife and I ordered a variety of dishes. All food was dry and stale. The lo mein was pretty much ramen in a package. Crab Rangoon was so underwhelming. read more

When I first walked in, I immediately thought it looked like the Chinese restaurant at the end of the movie ", A Christmas Story. The food is pretty good but not elite. Portion size was good. I will try again, the only thing I think it is priced slightly high for quality. Oh and no fried wontons with the hot and sour soup. read more

Nice server. Unfortunately our main dishes were not good at all. No flavor. It seemed like they re heated the items. Chicken was chewy and no flavor. Rice was clumpy and flavorless. Crab Rangoon was good. Will not be back unfortunately read more

My son brought home some Generals chicken last night. It was some of worst food I've had in a long time. There was something wrong with the chicken. It was tough and stringy. It was so bad that I just tossed it out. Adios Great Hunan. Not again!!!! read more

No more soup with lunch specials... hot tea's extra as well. Kinda disappointing. Still good food, but could be better. Chicken I had today was dry & chewy, but at least they offer the dine-in option. read more

5 stars for the wait staff, You get decent portions and the price is pretty cheap but you get what you pay for. The food was mediocre at best. I had the General Tso's Chicken and there was no heat, barely any flavor and the sauce was watered down. The meal cam with two sides a soup and an appetizer. I had the egg drop soup which was Good and for the appetizer the cheese wantons. The wantons had hardly any filling and the wanton was over cooked. read more

The amazing food is worth the bad service.... My boyfriend and I come here all the time. Well actually we order takeout all the time because we sat inside only one time. And that was one too many. But seriously the food is so good that it might not even matter. The reason I say this is because my boyfriend ALWAYS orders hunan beef. and I always order General Tau chicken. But sometimes when we get two entrees, it is a lot of food. Well I was ordering our order over the phone and each time I finished naming off a dish the lady on the phone thought I was done and kept saying "okay that'll be 10-20 minutes. She would never ask if I wanted more, and then when I gave my final order she was like "oh my god" like i'm ordering so much food and I was being inconvenient for this lady by calling them and ordering food. I just felt it wasn't right and it was really irritating. But the food turned out great! read more

I loved this place when I was a student at WSU, and I love it now, seven years later. They offer great, speedy delivery, and the restaurant itself is tidy and cozy but still has plenty of seating. The service is prompt, friendly, and polite. The menu offers a good variety of tasty food, and the portions are generous for a pretty low price. For $9.75, you can get an entrée, soup, and appetizer. I've always loved their orange chicken, and my friend adores their wonton soup. Definitely stop here if you have the time. And to the group of scummy college students who were part of the Towny Tour bar crawl who dined and dashed at this establishment last night: I sincerely hope you somehow get caught. You screwed over some really nice people at a great local spot, and if you don't get your comeuppance legally somehow, I hope you get chronic diarrhea with no access to a bathroom the next time you dine anywhere. read more

This is the worst place I've ever been! I had to wait 10 min to be taken to the seat even though the restaurant was empty ( me and my friend) after that she took our order and got us water with unclean glass when we asked for straw the waitress threw it on the table. The straw didn't have a cover at all :,( my friend ordered one of the expensive food ( fish). It was sooo salty we couldn't even swallow a bite. When my friend asked to change her order before adding more on her plate, the waitress was so rude to her and asked us to pay and leave read more

Was in Winona, MN this weekend for the Mid West Music Festival and I was on the hunt for a good vegan meal before a night a rock n and rolling! I went to the Blue Heron, because I had been there before, but the chairs were just getting put up on the table! So we walked a bit and found Great Hunan. We only had about a half hour to eat since my friends were playing down the street and I wanted to catch them play. We were greeted immediately and sat and ordered within minutes! The service was fantastic. We both ordered a Tofu dish with brown sauce. It comes with Soup and an Egg Roll, Ashley got the soup and Egg roll and I passed on mine for none of those options were vegan! But it was ok, my meal portion was enough to keep me full the rest of the night! The tofu was really great, fried to perfection, but the stuff that came with it was just ok, and bordering on a bit bland.. Bamboo shoots, and pea pods, and some very strange and chewy mushrooms. Served with family style rice for the whole table. All in all it had the 3 F's I was looking for, it was Fast, Friendly, and Filled us up for the rest of the night! Not bad, but I might order something different next time. read more

Great Hunan is decent Chinese food at a relatively decent price. The potstickers, hula beef, and shrimp egg foo young are always my go to. The wait staff is friendly and always helpful. The reason I'm giving Great Hunan 2 stars is because, every time I call to order take out I have to call multiple times before someone answers if they even answer at all. read more

Delicious Chinese food for a great price. All the employees are super friendly, great place to take someone out.

I truly question anyone who gives this place more than 2-3 stars. If you think this is a 4* restaurant, you have never had good chinese food. Trust me. I'm not sure I've ever gotten a single good thing here. Just last week I went here with some friends and got the Beef and Broccoli.. I only ate the broccoli. What does that tell you about the meat? I'm legitimately concerned about what I was eating because the 'beef' had absolutely no beef-like texture or taste..... Also, I've noticed that just about everything I've gotten there is coated in the same brown sauce crap. There is very little variation between a lot of their entrees, and it's really just a super salty and somewhat tasteless sauce. Their fried rice is.. rice and soy sauce. MMMM. Their crab rangoons are clearly mass-made and then just tossed on to your plate when you order.. I'm not sure what else would explain why they're consistently stale when I get them. Guess it's too much to ask to fry them when the order is put in. read more

General Tso's Chicken. Get it. Smile. Pretty good deal for a ton of greasy tasty food. I wouldn't go anywhere else in Winona for my Asian cuisine. read more

I suppose we've been spoiled. Our family of 5 had reactions ranging from "it's OK" to "I don't want to eat now". Noodles are not what you would get if you ordered noodles anywhere else. Cashew chicken tasted a bit sour. Orange chicken didn't taste like orange. Would I go there again? Probably not. read more

This has always been our favorite Chinese Restaurant in town. I moved away 9 years ago and everytime I come to town to visit, this is a must have while I'm here. read more

We have to agree with Jeremy H. and DAVE J. The portions are good sized and the egg drop soup is not bad. The Governor's Lamb may not have been Lamb. One of us thought it was, I thought it was beef. The Orange Chicken was flavored only by the orange sauce poured over it. The worst thing was the fried rice which is basically just white rice with soy sauce poured over it and some slivers of carrot and a few peas added. Still, we took our leftovers and, because of lack of competition, we may go again. Or we may try one of the places on the highway or bring it in from somewhere else. We agree the staff is friendly. Our waitress was sweet and competent earning an almost 25% tip. One last thing, be careful going to the washroom. As you near the appropriate door, there is an unmarked 9" or 10" step up. read more

The server was very sweet and the food was very good! Fast service and the pricing was great! Will definitely be back.

If I could put NO stars I would. Messed up our order, forgot portions of the order and then refused to reimburse us with our money. While also being completely rude towards us and blaming us for the mistakes made by THEIR staff. Never going there again. 0/10 would never suggest this place. read more

Most trash excuse for Chinese food on this planet. Ordered an order of wontons, which it says comes with 8, and got 3. Ordered chicken fried rice, got brown rice with 2 carrots and 1 pea in the whole container. Ordered orange chicken, garbage. Don't waste any moments of your life here. This is next level f***ery. It's extremely cheap, get what you pay for. NEVER, EVER GO HERE. IF YOU'RE ON THE FENCE, DON'T BE. I'D RATHER EAT MY MONEY I SPENT THAN THE FOOD I GOT. read more

I've eaten here before and it was OK. Not tonight! I ordered potstickers under the appetizers, and five minutes later when he brought my main meal i said "but I haven't received my appetizer yet?". To which I was told the potstickers won't be served before the meal because they take a long time. I've never heard that in my life! When I told him that I then didn't want the potstickers, all I got was a dirty look. I'm not sure what was worse, no appetizer, Hot tea delivered after I was half done with my meal (it was the first thing I ordered), or the piece of plastic (corner of a plastic bag) that was in my chicken? They need to step it up a bit... read more

This place is AWFUL!!! It's way overpriced and the "lo mein noodles" are just spaghetti noodles thrown in a box!! None of that good saucey flavor you expect from a Chinese Food restaurant. The chicken was rubbery and just all around VERY bland food. We love Chinese and I've never been so disappointed with a Chinese restaurant before :( do not recommend at alllllll read more

Not sure what happened, but their food is horrible. Used to love this place, now need a new Chinese restaurant.

Not bad. Delvery was a hard time concidering it was to a Wamart parking lot. The fried rice and pot stickers were awsome but the lo mein noodles were wrong. Expensive. $23.00 for what I discussed. read more

I have eaten here before and loved the food. However the food was horrible tonight, to the point I wouldn't even eat it. None of the veggies were cooked in my meal and the sauce was cold that they put over my chicken making it all cold. There was also so much breading on my chicken that was hardly no chicken. Their service is always absolutely horrible. You can see all the workers sitting at a table on their phones as we are waiting for water, a check, and boxes. NOT A HAPPY VISIT..... read more

This is the only Chinese restaurant I eat at in Winona. I love the white sauce and egg rolls.

Love Their General Tso's Chicken. It is sooo good

The BEST crab rangoons I have ever had, no where else ever good them. Always fast and orders are always right.

The best Asian cuisine in the city! It's best for lunch, and it's fairly cheap. The place can be kind of dimly lit, which may make it seem dirty, but it's not. They have a good selection, and you'll find something you like. read more

The brown sauce most entrees are floating in does not have a lot of flavor. The prices are fantastic, but food quality/flavor disapoint. I hate to write a negative review of any local business but hopefully management will read this and work to improve the food. I ordered the general tsos chicken, and while the portion was generous, I think the hyvee chinese had more flavor..... It was just chicken smothered in s bland brown sauce. It was even listed in red on the menu as spicy, while it was terribly bland. Go to little Thailand instead. read more

Wonderful food from an extensive menu and great service make up for a light on ambience experience. The prices reflect the less fancy nature.
