Today's visit included trying one of their new paninis. I got the chicken and pesto panini today…read moresince I love those flavors. My first impression was it looked nothing like the photo unfortunately. I actually said (to myself) "where's the pesto?" You can barely see it. The chicken pieces were thick and seemed to be fresh and high quality which was good. I do wish the chicken was shredded vs chunks. It would make it easier to eat and would probably help to have the pesto flavor envelop the chicken. We also got a French dip which is a repeat order for me/us. That's hands down the fave to far from Mr Pickles. Today we ate on the patio which was nice and enjoyable experience.

The French dip itself was really good. You can tell they use quality meat, and they definitely don't skimp on filling the sandwich. The only downside was the price, which felt a little high for the size. One thing worth mentioning is the Dutch crunch bread. It tastes good, but man, that bread is rough on the roof of your mouth. It's pretty crunchy and a little hard to bite into, so don't be surprised if you leave with the roof of your mouth feeling scratched up. They also give you a little chocolate chip cookie with your sandwich, and that thing was pretty damn good. It's a nice little bonus. Overall, this is a really good sandwich shop with quality ingredients and good portions of meat. The prices are a little on the higher side, but it's definitely worth checking out if you're in Chandler.

Disappointing Experience -- Patio Smoking Makes Dining Unpleasant…read moreI visited Lee's Sandwiches on Warner Road today and was very disappointed by the conditions outside and inside the restaurant. A group of men regularly sit on the patio playing cards for money and smoking heavily. The smoke becomes so thick that it's nearly impossible to enjoy sitting outside. Even worse, the cigarette smoke drifts into the restaurant, making it uncomfortable to sit and eat indoors as well. Customers shouldn't have to choose between breathing cigarette smoke outside or being exposed to it inside while trying to enjoy a meal. I hope management will address this situation. The patio should be a place where customers can comfortably sit and eat, and cigarette smoke shouldn't be making its way into the dining area. I'd appreciate seeing management take this concern seriously. Several reviews mention that men often smoke heavily outside the entrance and in the outdoor seating area. Some reviewers also note that the outdoor area can get crowded with men playing cards and smoking on a daily basis. We had to leave and eat our food elsewhere. Food was fine, fresh sandwiches, tasty.

Before an event in the area, I stopped by Portillo's Chandler for a late lunch. This location of…read morethe iconic Chicago hot dog chain is situated close to the mall in Chandler. Parking is a breeze in their large lot. Ambiance (3.5/5): Portillo's gives off that old school diner feel. It's spacious. Comfortable. Modern while maintaining old school vibes. My only gripe? It was super cold inside. It was an unusually chilly day in Phoenix in September and they were still blasting the A/C. I usually run hot and I was close to needing a jacket. My arms were quite cold when I left. Not something that happens very often. Service (4/5): Portillo's has self-service kiosks where you can customize your order to your heart's content which is a nice touch. Or, if you're old school, you can put in your order at the counter. They call your name when your food is ready. My food took a little longer than expected for a fast food type of joint. Drinks (3/5): I had a strawberry milk shake. They're not cheap here, but I love a good milkshake. This one, unfortunately, while a good size, tasted a bit too artificial. Food (3/5): Portillo's is known for their Chicago-style hot dogs and their Italian beef... both Chicago classics. This time around, I tried an interesting menu item... their sausage and Italian beef combo. Rather than getting them separately, you get both of them on a bun. Good in theory, but it didn't work out. The heft of the sausage and Italian beef caused the bread to become soggy. Which then led to beef falling out of the sandwich. A messy predicament. Beyond that, I didn't love either protein. Next time around, I'll stick to what I know and like... the Chicago-style dogs. I've been to a Portillo's in Chicago. It's nice to have several locations in the Valley.
