So I really like this dentist, the staff, and the office! When you walk in there's a tiny waiting area and you'll more than likely be greeted by Meg. She is so bright and bubbly! Love her. When called back you walk to your open space, no rooms and closed doors. Taylor the dental assistant is so kind, informative, and gentle. She seems to love what she does. Dental visits have never been a nightmare for me. Likewise, they've never been something I've looked forward to. I decided to change from my assembly line dental operation to Great Grins and Dr. Fossum after they took great care of a dental emergency for my mother. When I sent an email to schedule, Meg called me back within moments -- and with an appointment about a week out as opposed to so many offices that are "scheduling for X number of months out." When I came into the office today with the minimal paperwork they required, Meg greeted me and promised to scan in the forms quickly. Before I even had a chance to get comfortable in the waiting room, Morgan (the hygienist) brought me back to get an exam and cleaning. Morgan was beyond gracious and patient with X-rays considering my extreme gag reflex. Furthermore, she gave a great and especially gentle exam and cleaning. Dr. Fossum came by and gave me a thorough exam and clean bill of dental health, including screening me for oral cancer. For the first time I can remember, I never felt pressured, upsold, or lectured about my teeth. That alone would make me come back, but the gentle and compassionate care I received today truly felt like a dental home. (Hokey, I know, but it honestly describes how I felt.) This is by far the best dental practice I have ever been to. I have felt welcomed and cared for since my initial new patient call with Meg. I have an embarrassing amount of dental anxiety and the entire staff are insanely kind and accommodating. After not having been to a dentist in more years than I'd like to admit, I needed a crown and a few fillings. This place has recently been taken over by a new dentist and his wife. They are extremely friendly, accommodating, and efficient. Upon arrival, you will be greeted with Megan, the dentists' wife, who is very welcoming and kind. The assistant is very personable and friendly and experienced in what she does. The dentist is calm, kind, and has a gentle hand and should put anyone with a fear of dental work at ease. I am leaving Austin soon and wanted to get everything done before the move, and we were able to accomplish everything quite quickly. I also do not have any Insurance, and I was worried about paying out of pocket. The office is lovely, full of light and very clean. One area of improvement: the staff had a hard time figuring out my straight-forward health insurance. After two phone calls, by the time I got to the office, it still had not been verified. But when I arrived, it was quickly resolved once I presented my ID card. I've always gone to family-owned dentist practices where the dentist actually knows you by name and spends more than 5 minutes in an examination. I made the mistake of trying out Floss for an Invisalign treatment when I first arrived in Austin. Needless to say, that was short lived. I came to see Dr. Shaw on recommendation from a friend. Her assistant gave me an amazing cleaning and then Dr. Shaw spent time walking me through my Invisalign treatments and showed me how she was going to help perfect my smile. She actually seemed to care about my teeth and treatment which was exactly what I had been looking for. What's more, Elaine, Edward and the rest of her staff are unbelievably nice and welcoming. I was a new patient and before I went in for my first visit to get my teeth cleaned I told them I wanted a crown replaced. They made a 2nd appointment with me and said it would be two weeks before the crown would be ready. The day before that appointment I get a call saying that they have decided to remodel the office and that I would have to wear the temporary crown for 2-3 weeks longer which meant wearing it for more than a month. I asked to reschedule so that I would not have to wear the temporary crown for 5 weeks and they said that Dr Shaw would be out on maternity leave until October. This was a total waste of my time. I would have never gone to them initially if they were going to be having this many issues and they should have been up front with me in telling me about all of these roadblocks before they committed to replacing my crown and taking me on as a new patient. The dentist seems to be as good as any other but the office staff isn't up front with the patients about information that will drastically change the time frame of work scheduled to be done because of a remodel and a pregnancy that they were aware of before I ever called them for my first appointment.
