After discovering that 2 of my budget haircut shops had closed, I looked in the Clairemont area. The first one I went to had a 2 1/2 hour wait for a walk in--nope! Then as I was driving toward the freeway I saw "Great Clips" which I'd never tried. I found a spot to do a U-turn and within 15 minutes I had a haircut starting! THey were were friendly , clean and efficient. I showed them a photo of a previous haircut and they did a fine job of copying it. I will try them again, for sure. Never been to great clips, usually cut my own hair but I'm moving so packed away my clippers. Needed a haircut badly. Came here. Asked for a simple cut, can't be that bad right? Pros: wait time is minimal for walk ins. Parking is nice. Cons: it feels like a scam. A teenager could do haircuts like this with no training. They don't clean up the hair from the person before you, nice, love lice. They charge 30 dollars for ten minutes of using clippers with two different guards, my 3 year old daughter can do that too. The lady with tats who did my hair has no business cutting hair - no fade ability, super uneven cut, random hairs sticking out all over the place, they leave hair all over your face, she makes one corny joke after giving you the worst haircut of your life. I looked at myself and almost couldn't recognize myself, in a bad way. There was no way I was asking her to do any more cutting on my hair, so I went home and cut the rest of my hair with a pair of random scissors. When I was a poor student once I went to a barber school to get a super cheap haircut for 5 bucks from a barber student. That was bad, but he was trying super hard. That had been the previous worst haircut of my life but this experience makes that barber school look like a luxury salon. Very satisfied customer. After taking my nephew to another hair salon for a fade and what I thought trim we needed to finish the work at Great Clips. The first place decided to just charge us for full price for the fade and refused to cut hair because it was longer. Enter Cheri who cheerfully greeted us and understood how important it was for a teen to look his best while expertly guiding him through his options. He hasn't had a haircut in over 2 years. A normal haircut costs about $22 but sometimes u get coupons that brings it down as low as $10. The place is located on Balboa Ave in the same plaza where there's an 85 Bakery, Panda Inn, and a Pielogy. Parking is big. The last few times I've gotten my haircut, I've gotten it cut by the same stylist which her name is Janet. She's such a pleasant person and she's very detailed when she cuts. She takes her time and doesn't rush just to get to the next customer like other stylists/barbers I've seen. For that, she deserves a higher tip. I request the most basic white-guy haircut. Scissor cut. Short on the sides and back, leave more length on top and take an inch off the front. Clippers for sideburns and to clean up edges is fine. Please trim eyebrows. Last time I got uneven sides, which still went over the top of my ears. Barely any length taken off the back. I felt like I had a starter mullet. Somehow, my part is gone. And Day 2 I had cowlicks kick up on the sides. After one week I had cowlicks and a flip in the back when I wore a cap. A lot of fingers slapping the sides of my head and a lot of hair pulling, but not a lot of cutting. It's also like she just stopped at the 10-minute mark, mid-haircut. No eyebrow trim, no clipper cleanup. I was there with my son. He got a way better cut than I did...probably because his stylist took her time and cared to do a good job. Recently on two occasions I have had two of the awesome stylists extend their compassion and kindness towards me. I'm 75 years old and I was going to great clips on West Point Loma Blvd once a week to have my hair washed. I have to do this because I have medical problems that prevent me from doing it myself. Last week they charged $10 and I would add a $3 tip. Today they charged $15 . That's a 50% increase,. For a person on social security that adds up to a lot at the end of the month! Came and my kids hair was butchered. The manager gave a bad attitude. I'm not sure if she had a bad day or what, but my experience was not a good one. I came in to give my daughter a is a haircut from long hair to short hair and I specifically asked if she could leave hair in the front to be able to go back her ear like a pixie type.. She told me that it would not look good because of her hairstyle and and she kept asking me what numbers I wanted. I began to tell her that I am not sure about the numbers. I showed her with my hand where I wanted her to stop cutting. She kept asking what numbers I wanted, and I told her that I don't know I don't do hair. My hairstylist was sweet polite, but my haircut was not good. I asked for a normal cut with some layers and it looked OK as I was paying, but when my hair dried when I got home (water sprayed so I didn't see full result when I got home).
