This place is a godsend for folks with curly hair! This is the first salon I've visited where I haven't had to explain why I like wearing my hair naturally curly as opposed to straightening it every day, the first salon where the stylist has a similar hair texture to my own, and the first salon to take my unique curl pattern into account. Most salons I've visited will cut my curly hair wet, painstakingly try to "even it out," and end the appointment with a blowout. It ends up looking fine in the salon, but often gives lopsided results once my hair is dried into its natural curl pattern. This doesn't happen at Bella Donna's because they use the "dry cut," technique. This technique is better for curly-haired individuals because the stylist is able to see how each curl behaves as it is worn and shape the cut based on the curl pattern of the hair rather than forcing it to conform to a specific symmetry. Alexis did a fabulous job. My hair sprung back to life as she snipped away the split ends. She took very little off, but it felt like a six-inch difference! Good hair days used to be super conditional and required lots of coaxing to get my grown-out lopsided cut to do anything other than be a triangle. With the way that Alexis shaped my hair, it looks amazing even when just rolling out of bed... more like a lion's mane than a triangular mess. During the appointment, Alexis talked to me in-depth about my routine and the goals I have in mind for my hair. While I'm getting a better idea of how to properly care for my curls and have learned a lot on my own, Alexis pointed out how I can make my hair care routine even better. Her informative and thoughtful explanations have already made a difference! Every single day I've been in a public space since my appointment, I've received compliments on my curls from total strangers. I'm looking forward to my next visit and it's barely been a week. What a great experience and hair cut. I've been to about a dozen salons in the 12 yrs I've lived here, but Tammy is someone special. I have thick, coarse, wavy hair that I've struggled to get in the condition I'd like. She pulled up a stool and talked hair with me... she had such great tips that no one else has ever shared with me. It is obvious that she is very knowledgeable, and wants to share and help. She gave me a cut that was exactly what I asked for, and the hair brush she recommended and I bought from her is awesome. Tammy was also really lovely to visit with. She is a sweet, warm and thoughtful person. I also appreciate that she is following good COVID protocol... the door stays locked so no one comes in without a mask, and she wears a mask herself. Tammy at Bella Donna's is simply the best. I had a difficult time finding hair color that my scalp didn't react to. Bella Donna's uses plant based organic hair color that has incredible results. The process is very similar to regular hair color without harsh chemicals. My scalp and hair hasn't been healthier. I have so much to say about the service I got from Tammy&Alexis. After a search on Google for a natural organic hair salon I decided to attend to Bella Donna's Speaking and expressing to Tammy what and how I was treating my hair before and what are my expectations for the final results after working with her. My hair went thru a lot of chemicals, I got the Japanese treatment twice and keratin treatment twice, I colored my hair with traditional hair color from regular hair salon multiple times. At age 26 I started to see that I'm getting gray knowing that all the chemicals don't really help to slow the process. Tammy suggested me that the best treatment for my hair would be to use plant based color. I agreed and took her advice. First she used light plant base hair color on my hair but I didn't catch all the grays, she offered me to come back another day and add some reddish color so the grays won't be visual, I was skeptic since I had a very bad experience with orange red hair colors, but I trusted her. This women is so educated, she knows exactly what she's doing, she follows her inner voice and intuition about the costumer desires and guide the costumer to the results they want with natural flow, I gave her all of my trust and she did wonders. Tammy helped me get back to my natural hair color, the color I haven't seen for 8 years and tried to get back on for so long. They are very nice there but when I went for a root touch up, highlight and a trim the stylist missed a section right on the front of my head. I've never had a stylist miss the front before....sure maybe a few strands underneath weren't highlighted or something but never on the front of my head. I didn't notice it at first because she styled my hair and with my hair down and my side part I couldn't see it. She was very nice and accommodating when I called to go back and have it fixed. However she still missed a part of the original spot. I will not go back. But I did like the hair cut. read more

I don't usually leave reviews, but based on the number of compliments I've gotten on my hair every time I see Tammy, I think a review is due. I got my hair cut and colored on Saturday and I'm STILL getting compliments today (Monday). This happens every time I go. She REALLY knows what she is doing. Not only does she do AMAZING work (as evidenced by all of the compliments I receive), I've gotten such great advice on how I can best style my hair based off of my preferences (air dry, etc.). The salon is super cute and centrally located in OB but it is still easy to find on street parking on Sunset Cliffs. Deb was fantastic. I have long thick hair and she spent the time necessary to make sure it was perfect with rushing through it or leaving it half dry as other places have in the past. I came in for an organic hair color and a trim 1 week before my wedding. I had A-line bob (longer in front, shorter in back) and just needed a simple trim to clean up the line. Kathy was my stylist. I told her I don't want to change the style or length and only need a cleanup trim. By the way, I found out that her wedding was one week after mine, so we chatted about planning and I was so happy that someone who knows the importance of wedding is doing my hair. Boy I was wrong... Next thing you know, I saw chunks of hair on the floor that are at least 3 inches long! I told her she cut way too short! But she said she is not changing length and that I will see once she styles it. When she styled, my hair style became something entirely different. She cut random chunks off around my face (supposedly the longest part), now I don't have A-line bob. She also parted my hair at the middle before she started to cut my hair. When I told her I usually part at the side, she said it doesn't matter and she proceeded to cut my hair. I'm no pro, but I'm sure it matters!!!! As expected, once she parted my hair at the side I got random layers only on one side too. I was holding back my tears when I told her this is not what I asked for. I'm not the person to freak out over a haircut usually. Hair grows eventually. But this was one week before my wedding!!!! She told me "I'm sorry if you didn't like this, but your original haircut was like 4 different haircuts in one. I had to do this to fix it. The good news is that now you have a blended haircut". Really??? I used to get so many compliments on my haircut from strangers. I loved the style. That was the hair I wanted to wear for my wedding photos that I will keep for long time to come. I blame myself for going to a new person right before my wedding but I needed the organic hair color as I found out I became pregnant. Besides, I didn't think a stylist from a decent salon can really mess up a simple trim! I don't know if Kathy doesn't have the fundamental skills, or she just didn't care what I asked for. I don't know which is worse. In the end, I had to get hair extensions from elsewhere to restore my previous style. It cost me $330!!!!! Tammy is a color expert extraordinaire! And she uses natural non-toxic plant based colors! I have naturally red hair that had a lot of grays mixed in. I found Tammy because she was the only hairdresser listed in San Diego County listed as being knowledgeable in Henna and plant based dyes. I was searching for the most knowledgeable and skilled person in that field in San Diego because I had tried using Henna once on my own and I screwed up. When I did my own hair color (even though I used the best henna) it came out looking very unnatural and no longer a pretty red/auburn but instead it came out a fake looking strawberry orange that did not match my skin tone or even all the clothes which used to go well with my face and hair. So I really needed to find an expert in red hair and also someone who knew about the peculiarities of fixing hair that had already had henna on it. I was soooo lucky to find Tammy! She patiently looked at the photos I brought of my natural red hair color before I had put henna in it on my own and before the grays appeared and listened closely to my description about what color I'd really like it to be. Since color is hard to describe, she made sure to ask me the questions that clarifed her understanding of what I wanted and then she clearly explained some ideas about what she thought would be best to do and what that would come out looking like on my hair. She didn't proceed until she knew I understood and agreed. What she told me was the clearest and best explanation I've heard of what variety of shades my natural color was composed of and what would would make my hair look the way I wanted. I'm very particular about my hair color, having been born with an unusual natural red color that identified me all my life. Over the past 5 years, when I started to get some grays, I had tried various other hairdressers for some temporary color to cover the grays. Often the color the other hairdressers would put on were either fake red looking or ended up being too dull and too brown. Red hair is very tricky and someone must be very skilled to work with it. Tammy has an unusually skilled eye for color details. She was truly amazing! My hair looks more beautiful than it has for so many years!! The plant based color and tones she chose gave my hair such richness of color and warmth of tone and added pop and shine. The result was a hair color blend that really highlighted my skin tone and looked both natural on me and stunning and striking at the same time! All my clothing colors look fantastic on now and, as a whole, my color palette with my beautiful hair color (thanks to Tammy) combined with my natural skin tone, looks uniquely beautiful now! I've never really loved any hair cut that I've ever gotten until I recently had my hair cut by Paul. Being one who has kept her hair long as sort of a mental security blanket, I decided to go for a much shorter "a line" cut. I was terrified to get my hair cut short however I have been dying for change and I told Paul to just go for it. He worked his magic and I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. I've never had a particular place/person whom I've gone to consistently to get my hair cut but Paul has changed that. As long as I'm living in San Diego I will definitely get my hair cut by Paul. I come to Bella Donna's just to have my hair done by Paul, and I drive all the way from north Oceanside to Ocean Beach just to for him. I found Paul through some of my friends that also had their hair done by him. The main reason I ended up trying him wasn't because they raved about how great he was, but because of how beautiful and healthy their hair was- I mean their hair just SHINED and was so rich in color and depth. I started going to him a few years ago and have followed him to the different locations he has been at, he is THAT good. I came here once with an old friend, she use to go see Kathy when she worked at the Loews salon and day spa. I was so impressed by the job Kathy did on my friends hair I immediately made an appointment to get my hair done ( after a terrible incident when a stylist screwed up my hair and cut it terribly) I simply told Kathy what I wanted my hair to look like a showed her a picture. One hour later my jaw dropped because it was perfect and exactly what I wanted. Not only did I love it, she gave me 20 dollars off since I was a referral (every referral she take off 20 dollar for you and the the person who referred that person) I refer everyone I can to go to kathy! Do NOT go here! Talk about AWFUL people! Alexis turned my hair orange ... and for SOME reason I gave her another chance ... and then she turned it GRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! After turning it orange, I texted her, and she didn't reply ... then when I came back, she admitted she knew that she had turned it orange and blamed it on the toner being mislabeled ... and proceeded to say, "you should've called!" ... Then after she turned it gray, for SOME reason, I was STILL super nice and was going to let her have ANOTHER chance ... she said she would fix it before I left town four days later ... when I texted her, she, of course, did not reply. I texted several times ... then finally called the salon (again, I do no know why I gave her all these chances!) She finally texted something like, "I hear you're confused ..." !!! ... In addition, she informed me she had decided to abruptly stop including drying as part of the service and to charge additional for it!! I am so grateful to now go to a competent stylist who doesn't change my hair all these terrible colors, still charge for it, and ignore texts! How unprofessional!!!! What an awful person!!!!! You could do better by putting a bowl over your head and cutting... Expect to wait a long time minutes and then it is hit or miss. My first curly cut was ok but I had to wait over 30 minutes. I went back for a bang trim and was just about to leave after waiting 25 minutes - wish I had left! I told Tammy just trim the bangs - not too short but please cut just below my eyebrows. She cut way above the eyebrows and it looks like I took a straight razor and lopped off the bangs - they are that crooked. Her comment was oops - I got scissor happy. Too bad I am starting a new job on Monday and wanted to look sharp. Just take my advice and stay far away from this place!!! I will never go back. read more

I recently had my hair done by Shana at Bella Donna's and she exceeded my expectations, which are quite high when it comes to hair. I have been getting my hair styled, highlighted, colored, and cut by professionals and by myself since the age of 15. I have curly, thick, naturally dark hair so after getting my hair ruined by stylists with no experience with my type of hair, I decided to only go to salons in Mexico, where they knew how to work with my hair. Since moving to the Bay Area going to Mexico to get my hair done is not as convenient and my last hair experience in San Francisco was, as I had expected, disappointing to say the least. So when my sister recommended Bella Donna's I was hesitant but desperate so I agreed to go. Shana, who claims she is not an expert on curly hair, actually listened to what I had to say about my hair type and did exactly what I wanted. She cut my hair dry and curly, which no one has ever done to me except for when it is straightened, to make sure it would work. She was very thorough when highlighting and toning my hair. I normally leave after color and cut or have the stylist style it curly because most of them leave me with a puffy fro when trying to blow dry or flat iron it straight.
