Housed in a renovated Carnegie library building around the corner from where the bus stops, they even have an old grandfather clock and their underground parking beats Aberdeen's tiny outside area. The only downside is the main collection is on the second floor, while the bathrooms are in the basement. I also wish they weren't closed on Mondays. As in other Timberland libraries, the WiFi is good and they even allow limited free printing. Their interlibrary loan is also free and you can return materials to any Timberland branch.

While passing through Aberdeen, I decided to do a mini Nirvana pilgrimage and check out the town that Kurt Cobain grew up in. After spending time at Kurt Cobain Memorial Park near Young Street Bridge, I walked over to his childhood home. The house is just around the corner. It has been refurbished and it is gated off. Someone else currently lives here, so all that you can do is take photos from the sidewalk. Cool historic place to check out, especially if you grew up a Nirvana fan like me. But there is not much else to see or do.

Kurt Cobain was born and grew up in the Washington coast harbor town of Aberdeen WA. This is where…read morehe lived from 1968 to 1984. It was purchased by Lee and Danielle Bacon in 2018 from the Cobain family. They paid $225,000...a bargain considering that the cardigan Cobain wore in 1993 on the set of "MTV Unplugged" sold at auction for $334,000. The Bacons have restored the home to appear as it would have while Cobain lived there. At the time of this review, you cannot go inside, but plans are in the works to make private tours available in the near future. Tours will begin about 1.5 miles away at a soon to be opened Nirvana tribute lounge and gallery cafe as zoning does not allow the home to operate as a traditional museum. It's great to see Aberdeen finally beginning to embrace Cobain's contribution to music history. Fans travel great distances from all around the world to find Cobain's beginnings and pay tribute in the town that helped to shape him. Just a few days prior to writing this review, the Aberdeen City Council unanimously voted to make February 20th (Cobain's birthday) Kurt Cobain Day.

How bizarre to review a business park, huh? Except that this business park contains the remains of…read morea never-completed nuclear power plant, most notably the two massive cooling towers associated with a traditional power plant. While the Hanford Site in Eastern Washington was instrumental to the Manhattan Project, there is a noticeable lack of nuclear energy projects in the Pacific Northwest (with only two active reactors that I know of- at said Hanford Site, and the student run reactor at Reed College in Portland, Oregon.) Trojan Nuclear Power Plant in Oregon has been closed for many years and it's distinctive cooling tower was demolished back in 2006- so where can you go for some photo shoots and pseudo-urban exploration? Well, Satsop is within daily driving distance from Seattle and Portland and considering the price (free,) it is well worth stopping by.

A few side items to note - the business park has hundreds (I mean hundreds) of brand new Volkswagens waiting for their forever home, so feel free to look around. BUT don't look too closely because there is a security guard with a lead foot who loves to mad-dog you from the comfort of the front seat of his Ford Focus (1989 - 92 model). There is also a huge boring machine on site which begs the question - are there tunnels below these nuclear structures and if so did the forgiving tax payers of the beautiful Pacific Northwest pay for this rusting eye sore? In any event - the power plants are pretty cool to see.

Officially known as the Young Street Bridge (b.1956), Nirvana fans (and even Google maps) consider…read morethis the "Something in the way Bridge" after the song of the same name. The song was released on the 1991 Nirvana album, Nevermind. Kurt Cobain grew up in a home just minutes away and this is the bridge that, during periods of homelessness in his youth, he claimed to have lived underneath. This claim was later countered by Krist Novoselic who co-founded the band Nirvana. He essentially felt it wasn't possible since the Wishkah River is tidal and can rise significantly during the day. After visiting, I believe that, at least for the majority of time, it would have been possible for Kurt to sleep there. Only a very high King Tide could have prevented him from sleeping under the bridge at the upper portion of the river bank. The bridge crosses over the muddy banks of the Wishkah River (memorialized in another Nirvana song) and it was one of Cobain's favorite places to hangout in Aberdeen which is considered to be the birthplace of Grunge music due to Cobain's birth and musical beginnings that took place here. * Note that Kurt Cobain hated the term "Grunge" and was quoted as saying "I have strong feelings towards Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains and bands like that. They're obviously just corporate puppets that are just trying to jump on the alternative bandwagon and we are being lumped into that category." To this day, Nirvana fans from all around the world make the pilgrimage to Aberdeen, WA to pay tribute to Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. If this is important to you, take note that this bridge is sadly slated to be demolished in the next few years and replaced with a new bridge as its "sufficiency rating" is at just 14.71 on a scale of 0 to 100. Aberdeen does not have a bookstore to speak of (I suppose there's the Christian bookstore in the mall, but if you want fiction, it's either Wally World or the grocery store) and that is a real gap that the library helps to fill. While the catalog for the Aberdeen library isn't large, the Timberland Regional Library system is huge, spanning five or six (maybe seven, I'm losing track) counties, and it's based in Olympia. So there is a lot more in terms of resources than the city of Aberdeen itself could ever hope to pull together. And with computerized library holds for virtually all its media, you can get obscure titles relatively quickly. The library system only recently instated overdue fines. This has made them able to purchase an even wider selection of media because they don't have to buy large numbers of popular books, CDs and DVDs anymore (people wouldn't turn them in by the due date, which meant the library system would overpurchase popular items to compensate). I don't think a single person was bummed out by this, in fact, I (an occasional abuser of the system, but not out of control) thought it was a great idea. The library now has a security guy inside all the time, which may make you feel safer (there are lots of people who, oh, use a lot of services and don't really have another place to go during the day that hang out there). The bathrooms are clean and there's always plenty of parking. The Aberdeen TImberland library is a pretty solid cornerstone of our downtown, and so important for all it does for our town.

And amazingly enough it's also one of the quietest! I was shocked to find a guy shooting dope in the restroom stall one day recently but hey, drug addicts need to feel secure too I suppose. I don't condone drug use, but it certainly beats having them do this crap out in the alley. The staff here will always greet you with a huge smile and be willing to go out of their way to help you find something or do anything else you might need help with. Heck, even the security guard lady is really friendly and sweet!

We went to the Chevron here, and I didn't get my cup refilled with Pepsi, even though they had a Pepsi machine because the prices were way to high! So, just got gast, wife got coffee and we hit the road, I highly doubt I will be back here unless we need gas.
