left dock. then engine took us about 300 yds & stopped...just sat in bay for 2+ hrs. went nowhere. hot day in Seattle; but little concern about just sitting in the heat & the elderly onboard thinking too that the ship's movement would provide some breeze even if sails could not be used. no announcements re: our stagnat 'tour'. coincidentally enuf the engine was ignited to move back to shore just as next tour was about to board. *engine couldnt be used to move the ship out into strait ? very very disappointing & a lot on $ for nothing. read more

The Lady Washington - totally misrepresented - Landmarks & Historical Buildings Near Me - Aberdeen, Washington

Review of our sail with Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority and the Lady Washington, out of Ilwaco, WA on Mothers Day. Impressed with the back office operations - it was easy to buy the tickets online, reasonable low fee (not like the scalping you get with "TM"). They had to handle last minute cancellation of the 'battle sail' due to second boat not available and communicated extremely well with customers, calling and emailing. Easy to check in and board, everyones names on the log, didnt see anyone get denied or have a problem. As far as the ship - fascinating replica, down to the last detail it seemed. Dizzying number of lines (ropes) all neatly coiled and secure. Crew professional and friendly, easy to ask questions and they were eager to share knowledge. The ship motored out into the river, but the real beauty was when they unfurled sails and cut the engine. WOW. Fired the gun 5x, lots of fun. What a great afternoon! Yes, they'll have the totally appropriate tip hat when you get off, be generous if you enjoyed the experience. read more

I just finished with the Lady's two week training program: Two Weeks Before the Mast, and it was the experience of a lifetime! If you ever had the idea you'd like to be a sailor, this is your opportunity for first hand experience. For two weeks you'll live and work aboard learning sail theory, maritime history, and participating in the educational programs they offer to the public. I also learned all aspects of daily life of a 17th Century replica ship: I hauled sails, swabbed the decks, polished the brass, and, best of all, climbed the rigging! What an amazing experience! Now that I've completed my two weeks, I am welcome back as a volunteer any time space is available! I highly recommend the experience! Google Two Weeks Before the Mast for more info. As a side note, I was aboard when disgruntled gentleman below left his one star review, and I would like to offer a more complete perspective. These tall ships were never meant to be tied to a dock; they were meant to drop anchor in a harbor and transport cargo, crew and passengers by rowing them to and from shore in a small boat - neither practical nor necessary in today's world. As such, docking them can be a dangerous experience which requires complete concentration and focus. Our officers are highly trained, well experienced, and thoroughly familiar with the ins ans outs of this very specialized boat. To presume they needed "friendly advice from a fellow sailor" on the dock (just because he owns a Chris-Craft) is in itself presumptuous and the height of hubris - regardless of gender. Even after the man was thanked and told it wasn't necessary several times, he still persisted in offering his unwelcome advice and suggestions while the docking was taking place. It took the first mate becoming terse and insistent with him before he took the hint, and even then he continued to badger the deck hands who were lashing dock lines with his advice on how best to do it. The one-star review he left speaks more to his own insecurities at being told his advice was not necessary and finally not welcome than it does to the officers aboard the Lady who are at all times professional and dedicated when the safety and well-being of their ship is at stake. read more

Great day aboard the Lady! Don't let the funky, dilapidated old wharf that Aberdeen provides for her home port discourage you...the Lady is 1st class! Very instructional, too! Great crew of talented young people. You get to actually help sail a square rigger! And the ship- an all wooden vessel- is totally authentic....hand built in Aberdeen! This is Aberdeen's STAR attraction! Aberdeen should step up and provide a 1st class, high-visibility place to berth her for the many tourists (like me) who pass through town...instead of virtually hiding her behind a lonely old backwater pier with practically no signs and no toilet facilities. Hear this, Mr/Ms Mayor of Aberdeen? Lady Washington is your magnet for tourist dollars! read more

I would love to have toured this historic ship, however interacting with the crew showed a bigotry and sexist view point of senior members. Too assume that help was being offered because they were female and not simply in the spirit of one sailor to another is the night of hubris and sexism. I was specifically told they did not need a man to tell them how to do their job when a simple observation of a potential issue was brought to their attention. I do not recommend this tour or adventure if you are male. Especially since no other members of the crew said anything against her. read more

Such an incredibly fun thing to do, go sailing on a Pirate Ship! The website was easy to navigate and purchase tickets on. Finding the port and ship was relatively easy, with one exception... the instructions said to go to the office but the office was closed and we were late getting to the ship. So.... just go to the pirate looking ship and you'll be fine. :) It happened to be Westports annual Pirate Daze event, which I didn't even realize when I purchased the tickets, so that was an added bonus and tons of fun! The crew and captain of the ship were all incredibly nice, helpful, informative and fun! We ended up doing a sunset sail because all the other ones were sold out. Next time we are definitely doing the Battle Sail, as we saw the characters boarding the ship the next day and it just looked like a hoot! BUT the crew asked everyone if they wanted a canon demonstration and everyone agreed, so we got that bonus experience too! Highly recommend it for kids of all ages! read more

We just sailed on the Lady Washington from Kirkland to Olympia and we had the time of our lives. It was very hands on, even though we had no experience at all. The crew were very professional, and obviously knew the ship inside and out, even though there were so many ropes and it was such a complex process. The love they had for the ship was clear. They always had time for questions, and took the time to really explain what everything was. The were friendly and patient, and happy to talk about the ship, her history and why they were doing everything that they did. It was a real adventure for us, and I can't recommend it highly enough. We loved every second of it. The ship itself is amazing, but the crew really brought everything to life. Great experience. read more

My husband and I just took an overnight passage from Kirkland to Olympia. It was simply fantastic. The crew and volunteers were very welcoming, the grub, though simple, was filling and delicious, and the bunks were comfy. We were invited to either just relax, or to join in the chores along with the crew. Since this was our first passage, we were a little shy, but ended up polishing brass like a boss. Unfortunately, the winds were against us, so we never hoisted the sails, so we didn't get to experience the full glory of tall-ship sailing, but we learned a lot about the day-to-day life. We're trying to figure out how to fit a full two-week voyage on the open seas into our schedule next year, and now we've been inspired to take sailing lessons at our local club. Thank you to Captain Cassie, the crew, and the volunteers, for a wonderful trip! (P.S., I forgot to mention that people watching us go by treated the ship like a rock star - photos, waves, shouts of encouragement - it was really fun!) read more

My husband and I signed up for Lady Washington's evening sail had so much fun, during the sail we really enjoyed the Cannon fight between Lady and the Chieftain! Isaac, the Steward, was so entertaining and knowledgeable about the tall ship. All the crew members are fun and engaging and everyone was willing to teach you all they do while living on the tall ship! A MUST SEE!!
