With regard to Gray's, I am torn. On the one hand, and for Green Thumbs like me, Gray's Garden Center is the perfect place to while away an afternoon. The location is stellar, and classic Eugene (e.g., you *will* smell a certain type of plant if you wander out to the back left to shop for maple trees). The employees are super friendly. Additionally they give you "Gray's Dollars" which make you feel like you've earned money while shopping there! On the other hand, Gray's is really expensive, and I have found it difficult to locate a decent selection of native plants (deer ferns? No? Really?). Ultimately, the good wins out for Gray's. There's no other place in prime-time downtown that can compete, and the lack of native perennials seems a small price to pay when you find yourself browsing through all of their super-cool tropical indoor plants on some rainy Eugene afternoon. read more

Based on how they treated me today, I'm tempted to give one star. But, overall, that wouldn't be fair. I took back a deer resistant plant that the deer had devoured last night. My complaint isn't about the plant; it's about how snotty the employees were--both the young guy at the counter and the young manager that he called over. They lectured me that "deer can't read" and that the deer resistant notice has an asterisk (it doesn't). Now, I'm not an idiot, although that's how they treated me. I know that a "water resistant" label on a jacket doesn't mean "water proof". And I know that "deer resistant" doesn't mean "deer proof". "Deer can't read" is obviously something that they had memorized and have to say pretty often, since both the counter boy and the manager came up separately with the same lecture, word for word. Had they said it with a smile instead of condescendingly teaching me that deer can't read, I would have said OK and just bought the other plants that I had come in for. Had they not been so rude they'd still have a customer. (I've just bought a house in Eugene and have a lot of landscaping to do and, next spring, vegetables and herbs to plant. But, there are other nurseries in Eugene. Maybe less convenient. (Gray's is right next door to Beer Garden, so it's like one-stop shopping. Oh...I can still go to Beer Garden for lunch without buying anything at Gray's.) Too bad. Other than how rude they were, it's not a bad nursery. Oh well.... read more

I went to stop by and get some plants and saw the awesome little food car court yard next door. I decided to stop by and grab a drink after our afternoon plant trip, little did we know the owner will tow you as soon as he feels you have over stayed your welcome. On top of that him and the tow truck driver are running a nice little scam where he will drop your car for $50 in cash. After i paid my dues i swung around the block because i had a bad feeling and saw them both conversing together, what i believe was the owner and the tow truck driver and it looked as if they were exchanging something by hand. I've gone to Gray's a number of times in the past year or so that I've lived in Eugene and have only recently read the reviews on this place. To be honest, I was surprised to see all the 1 and 2 stars with customers commenting on poor customer service. While it's possible I caught them right after a transition period, I can say in the several times I've gone to Gray's I've never had a bad encounter with any of the employees. It's not necessarily always an above-and-beyond experience, but every time I've asked for help or gone to check out, I've always been treated respectfully and kindly. Not trying to discredit anyone else's experience, just saying I believe they've reevaluated their customer service standards. In regards to parking, I've popped into Gray's and then gone over to Beergarden for a bite a few times and have never been towed. If your looking for polite service along with great garden plants, I would recommend going somewhere else, I would recommend Jerry's or Lowe's. We bought a $20 outdoor plant a few days ago along with other plants. We kept them all watered in the buckets until today. We began planting and saw the $20 plant was dyeing. We returned to the store and spoke with the most unpolite women employee. She refused to refund or exchange the dying plant and was really rude about it. She kept saying we didn't water it, which was not true, it was just a diseased plant which they sold us. Anyway we will now only buy our gardening plants, bushes and garden accessories from the big box stores who always refund or exchange dead or dying plants. Save your time and money by purchasing garden products elsew here. So much for supporting local mom & pop establishments. read more

This was the least pleasant shopping experience I have ever had. Honestly, beyond the one terrible employee (potentially the owner?) the employees were pleasant. The store was minimally stocked but I was trying to spend a little money on some house plants and pots. I had a good time shopping while my husband picked up our food to go next door. We were looking forward to going home and planting our new plants and eating some food. However, my husband forgot his wallet so I needed to go into the Beer Garden to give him my card. I had put my new plants in the car and was waiting for him to come out, when I got his message. This pathetic employee had followed me to my car and was standing outside of it, seemingly spying that I left his precious parking lot. He cornered me between my car and another car and started screaming that I was no longer a customer of his business so I needed to move my car. I was scared and feeling attacked. So I moved my car. I'm not interested in messing with someone who is aggressive. However, my husband brought the food out to the car a second later to find me in a new parking spot and crying, with a pissy garden employee glaring at me. He decided our money was better spent elsewhere. He went in to return the plants. This horrid human must be so sad in his life. He continued to yell at my husband about me being a "bitchy woman" and that he "wasn't doing anything to make her (me) act like a crybaby". How dare he make fun of a customer. I had not even been out of his store 10 minutes when he threatened to tow my car. He was arguing that as soon as I left the store I needed to move my car. What a sad power play this man must make to blame his failing garden center on other factors than his obviously horrid customer service. read more

worst customer service, towed my car while i was inside buying flowers. the worst part of this actually is the fact there were no customers in the store, yet im the one who's car gets towed? you share a parking lot with numerous food carts and you expect people to not use the 30 empty spots for your over priced low quality plants. If you are into gardening, you are going to love this locally owned center. They have really healthy plants and fun lawn art. Seriously, everyone should have a gnome in the yard! They sell yankee candles at discounted prices from 20-40% off as well as bath products. I bought a cool bag that you grow tomatoes in upside down. On tv (I don't sleep much) the infomercial was charging $10 more than Gray's and you had to pay shipping. Go buy your mom some flowers already! read more

Gray's has all you need to start and maintain a great garden! I like the staff and how welcome they make you feel. The selection of potted plants is also good. I like flowers and plant a lot of them in my yard and I can ask questions about root systems and which soils to use and get quality answers from quality people. The parking area is a little crammed and there are some annoying people from the Beergarden next door, but overall it is a quality place to get quality plants and you won't be disappointed. read more

The only reason they are getting one star is because it's the lowest option. My fiance went here yesterday. We were looking at flowers for our Wedding in May as well as needing some potting soil to transplant a house plant. The soil was almost double the price as other local places but we figured oh well. Lets support a local business. We concluded our shopling for the moment and went next door to grab lunch at the overpriced and long wait times beer garden. After lunch we reurned to Gray's to look at more items to purchase. We left to the parking lot to find the manager had us towed. When questioned he said once you quit shopping you are no longer a customer. It was almost a $400 tow. I told the manager the sign says for Gray's customers and that by defenition is what we were. It says nowhere that there is any time limit. Then from the tow company driver Gray's and Beer Garden are owned by the same person and the tow fee is actually split with tow company and the business owner. So they got our money from Gray's purchases , beer garden drinks and food AND the tow split! I told the manager we would NEVER shop at either place again and he literally said " I don't care ". NEVER NEVER NEVER give them yoyr business. There are tons of other places to get gardening items and food that actually will appreciate your business and will think of you as a customer even after your done shopping for the trip. read more

This place is terrible. I bought two hanging baskets, $30 a piece, which looked gorgeous when I bought them. The next day, they were a little wilty. Checked, they needed water, watered them. I thought they were just stressed from moving. Two days later, they were almost dead. Chunks of them were falling out of the pots, as if they had shoved cut flowers into the pots, and they were falling out as they dried up. I will share photos if yelp lets me. I called them 6 days after purchase and asked about the condition of the plants. The upshot of the call, in which their worker was almost snarky towards me, was that it is my fault their plants were basically dead on day 3. The manager, through this guy, said that I had done something wrong, this had "never" happened with the hanging plants before, they do not guarantee their plants, and essentially, I was SOL. I had my ex examine them because he is an expert with plants, and he said there were multiple issues, but that we could start with the fact that their soil mixture was wildly wrong, too much perlite, so much that it was preventing the plants getting any water at all despite my efforts to water them appropriately. He said there was nothing wrong with what I had done, and that the plants dying was 100% on the store. He repotted them and pulled out the dead matter (photos if I can post them), after which they were less than half the original volume. One of them is coming out of the near death experience the store caused, the other looks like it's going to die. I bought a replacement at Rhythm and Blooms which is healthy and gorgeous, 3 days in. Same price. And they said if the plant died in 3-7 days, they would replace it. Never buying another thing from Gray's, and recommend others avoid them as well. They have horrible customer service, and their hanging plants do not last. Apparently I cannot share photos. I don't understand that, I see others have shared photos. I agree that Gray's has a pretty good selection. I also agree that they're overpriced and some (not all) of the employee's can seem a bit rude and not exactly on 'top of things' garden-wise. But I will use them occasionally when I can't find what I want for less money. My complaint is about their web site! In this day and age---- seriously----- a web site that has had portions of it 'under construction' for almost a year??? And what is so difficult about putting their hours of business on that poor excuse for a web site, at least? I want to go to them today, Sunday. I want to plan my morning around their hours of business. Businesses often open later on Sunday---- so........ So---- do I keep calling their number from about 9 A.M. on, hoping that I can find out just when they open? Get with it, Gray's. Gray's Garden Center is great for most if not all of your garden needs. You can find a large outdoor section full of plants, trees, soil and pots of all shapes and sizes. The staff are very knowledgeable and able to help you find things around the center and even help diagnose problems you may be having with your plants or trees at home such as a fungus or pest problem. You can bring in a leaf or small branch and they can tell you what you need to purchase to take care of the problem. When I came here on a Saturday they had a pizza vendor cooking pizzas in an outdoor oven and a band was setting up so they must have weekend events here which is awesome. Their prices aren't the cheapest though which in my case doesn't help a budgeted gardener like myself. They do have some really nice higher end decorative pots and accessories inside of their indoor section too so be sure to check it out. Parking is really easy but can fill up on a busy day because the Beer Garden is right next door. read more

I love Gray's. They're not the cheapest place, but they're not the most expensive, either. They have a good selection, and with the lathe-covered section partly shaded, the outdoor area is very pleasant just to walk around in. Inside, they have a good selection of gardening tools and a great selection of books. The houseplant section sometimes has an unusual thing or two, which I love. Personally, I've found the staff to be friendly & knowledgeable, even when the checkers are working at breakneck-speed trying to keep up with the spring rush. Good parking, and the side of the building facing the street always has a Wall of hanging baskets that are unbelievably lush and gorgeous. I'd go there just to look at those. read more

Quick and easy and Pam was so pleasant and offered advise on which assortment she would pick if it was up to her. Working with a person like Pam made the whole experience a real treat. I have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars yearly at this garden center. Today I wanted to exchange a plant. The employee told me rudely that it looked stressed. What was ironic was there was a plant lying on its side in the aisle with the dirt spilling out and a hanging basket right next to it that looked extremely stressed. I do a LOT of gardening and landscaping. So far, I have yet to find a nursery with such friendly, knowledgeable and helpful employees than at Gray's. They always go above and beyond in customer service, and their plants are always extremely healthy. I know many people think Gray's is overpriced. Honestly, some plants ARE a little pricey. But most merchandise is usually priced a couple bucks more than other plant nurseries. Gray's is centrally located (which saved money on gas, driving out to a place like Decker), and the price is worth it for the level of service you receive, and how well taken care of their plants are. This is the second review I've ever done in my life (not counting the one I wrote for a friend's business) for a business. I can't rave enough about the exemplary service I received from Gray's this weekend. Our Christmas tree was delivered Friday early evening and by Saturday evening the tree had taken NO water at all! I was having our tree trimming on Sunday afternoon. I called as soon as they opened on Sunday morning and even though their tree guys don't work at all on Sundays, Grays called up a couple of their men and within the hour they were at the house putting on a fresh cut (13-plus foot tree), offering to clean up ( I CAN push a vacuum) and were so kind. this is above and beyond!! I have visited this garden center twice and have found that it leaves a lot to be desired. The selection of most things they carry is okay, such as houseplants and containers, but the service, or lack of, is atrocious. During my two visits to this business, never once did an employee so much as make eye contact with me, smile, ask if I needed help, or acknowledge my presence in the slightest. It was to the point of rudeness, and I had to ask myself, "Have I suddenly become invisible?" When an employee appeared to notice my presence, they made an effort to ignore me. Even when I have stepped up to the checkout counter, I have not been greeted and the person checking me out has seemed completely disengaged. Honestly, at my age, I've visited my fair share of garden centers, both in California and Oregon, and have never been treated as poorly as I have in this place. It's truly baffling. I have to wonder if all the employees are thinking to themselves as a customer enters, "Ah, hell, another customer. I can't be bothered." This visit yesterday will be my last. I'm a Master Gardener, spend a lot of time gardening, a great deal of money doing it, and I'll take my business elsewhere, such as Johnson Brothers Garden Market, where the customer service is attentive, courteous, and a customer is treated with respect. read more
