Gravity Strings doesn't have the largest selection of vintage guitars and basses in the St. Louis area, but it's very good for their overall modest amount of floor space. There are some real gems there, so don't omit shopping at Gravity on your guitar pursuit adventures! Two years ago I bought a 1980s Martin dreadnought from this shop that quickly became my favorite acoustic guitar! Their repair work is top-notch and I've had it done for both warranty (they're a Gibson authorized repair shop) and non-warranty issues. Their ability to match a missing 60-year-old fretboard dot inlay was absolutely perfect! All of the staff with whom I've interacted have been cordial and Billy Barnett is especially helpful. A true musician's friend! After a long hiatus from music, I had decided to start playing out again. Honestly, it's an exciting time to be playing original music again. However, gear takes its share of wear and tear as it sits. If you're a guitar player who needs something fixed, then the guys at J Gravity Strings can probably help. My Vox amp hadn't worked for years. I took it to a place in Springfield, MO,but when I brought it home, the amp was still shorting out on me. After asking around, I had pretty well given up hope. J Gravity was mentioned in passing, so I thought that I would wander in to browse. If you love vintage guitars and amps, you might get lost in this shop. They carry used gear from all of the great brands but also unique equipment that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else. The prices are pretty high, but most of this gear isn't available at the cookie cutter stores. After my initial shock, I asked the clerk if they handled amp repairs. He said that they did. The first hour would cost fifty, just to figure out what was wrong, and they would call when they figured it out. Anyway, I brought in my amp and was pleased with the work. In the end, it only cost sixty dollars. A wire needed to be reconnected. However, I had a few broken caster wheels, and they replaced them for nearly nothing. They charged me two bucks a wheel, having had some used ones in the shop. Needless to say, I'm excited about playing through my Vox amp again. Called in about getting an amp fixed, the guy on the phone said go ahead and drop it off that day and they'd take a look. Less than 40 minutes later I got there, and a different guy told me the "amp guy" was gone for the day and to try again tomorrow. I'm not a fan of people who play games and waste my time/gas so I went to Winston. read more

Took model 1300 Silvertone in for repair, the tech told me it would be $400. To repair, i waited over a year for it to be repaired. They called said it couldn't repair it. When I went to pick it up, they had trashed the vintage speaker grill trying to take out speaker instead of removing the frame to remove grill, they pried out the metal grill bending it all up. This is a important amplifier was made in 1947, is also the same model amp that Johnny Cash used recording Folsom Prison Blues. I Chewed on Jimmy over the damage, he didn't care as far as I could see. So I took the amp home removed the grill like it was supposed to come out, and the speaker sent the speaker to Kansas to be reconed. Cost $80. And the amp worked with no other work. I tried to straighten grill it it damaged and the music symbol on grill was damaged. Karma Will handle this sorry repair shop. read more

It took a solid 6 weeks to change the power tubes on my Marshall head. Don't believe it when they tell it it will be 3 weeks for service. Every week I called they said it should take "3 weeks." I'd explain it has already been 3 weeks, and then 4 weeks and they seemed perplexed. Finally at the 6 week mark, they said 3 weeks again and I informed them it was already 6 weeks! Then they wanted to argue and tell me it was 5 weeks and 4 days. Whatever guys. When I picked it up and asked why it takes 6 weeks to replace two power tubes on a very common Marshall amp, the guy told me it should take 3 weeks. I guess that's the script they were taught. Unfortunately for them, there are other repair shops in town that mean what they say. read more

The folks here are pretty friendly but the shop is not much to be expected. The windows were full of old cheap instruments with a thick layer of dust. At first I was entertained by the interesting mix until I realized that's mostly what was inside too. Within all of the odd older guitars they did have a nice selection or Mesa amps. Lots of older amp heads and cabinets too however not much of real value there. The store is also not in the best area of town. read more

J Gravity has been in business for YEARS. And with good reason. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. They always have a great selection of new/used higher end amps/guitars and the guys there are always willing to answer any questions. I dig just stopping in for some accessories and checkin out what they have in stock. NOTE : If you dig that old store vibe, this place is IT. It just has a cool vintage store vibe while it sells new amps and guitars. Definitely a place for players, but beginners will find it exciting as well. read more

Really can't say enough good things about Gravity Strings. They've done some work for me on various instruments; always top-notch repairs. I recently took a Gibson mandolin from 1916 that had developed a crack in the top in for a repair. As always, great work and It now plays better than when I took it in. read more

Got an old HM Strat in a trade with a local player. I really liked the guitar but the frets were pretty worn. Took it to Jimmy to see what he could do. After trying to level and recrown the frets he called and said it needed a complete refret. Told him to go ahead. A week later I picked it up, took it home and played some blues on it. Wow! I liked it before. Now I am in love with this guitar. Jimmy did an amazing job and the price was extremely fair. This place may be a little out of the way, and the hours aren't always convenient, but it you want great work for a great price from someone you can trust your instrument to, take it to Jimmy. read more
