Sadly, the Reno area is extremely lacking in good quality used bookstores anymore. With the loss of Zephyr Books many years ago and the Book Gallery in Sparks, there just aren't enough quality used bookstores any longer. Grassroots Books is a very good used bookstore with a lot of variety of material-- children's books, DVD's, some records, gently used paperback and hardcover books. Hours are flexible for when they are open, however, they only buy books on Thursdays during the afternoon. I have never been tempted much to sell anything to them over the years, as they tend to be quite choosy with the material that they want and don't want. As a longtime book collector, this is important to maintaining a quality used stock and helps with inventory management. I highly recommend Grassroots for your next book adventure! read more

We love this books store. If you can find something you can ask to be notified if such a book ever arrives to their facility. They have new and used books as well within a reasonable price point. I found lots of great educational books from my preschooler. I even find coloring books and other things they are interested it. Our child likes tonsit on the chair and stare at the books they find. Its very well kept inside and they have a public restroom if you plan to stay longer. They even offer some hot tea and coffee. If you please. Parking lot is there, but as they are popular can get crowded. Overall its a wonderful place that we visit so often. read more

I frequent this book store on the regular. I went today for my first $5 fill a bag that they host on Sundays. It's held on the right side of the building behind the sliding gates. Lots of books to peruse, something for everyone. And to fill an entire paper bag for $5 is a steal! A handful of times I have brought in boxes of my own books to remove clutter and they purchased them from me. I mainly turn around and use it to get more books lol! I believe those hours are Mon-Thurs from 9-11. They have great deals on crafts and there's always sales carts located in the front of the building. I am always able to find books for a great price here. read more

My daughter and I love this bookstore and visit often. They have a great selection of both new and used books at very competitive prices. They will pay cash for your used books, vinyl records and blu-rays and the selling process is super easy and efficient. Nothing fancy, but full of treasures. What looks like an old service station at one time, has been this fabulous bookstore for years. I pass it a lot coming and going to Costco. And every once in awhile stop to check out new finds. GR is very well organized. Inside all the areas are well labeled. On nice days there are sale racks out front in the parking lot. During the summer go to the west side of the building and through the gate. There are 30 or more tables with boxes and boxes of books on clearance. Still very well organized- each table is labeled with the type of books in the boxes. GR carries brand new and used books. They have their own private parking lot and some street parking that is also free. They accept credit cards and cash. read more

Visited the bookstore while waiting for our car service to be complete. They have a great kids section and my son got a book on coding, a new fiction book, and a little crochet art project. Time for an update since my review is 5 years old. Still coming to Grassroots after all these years and lately, it's been a weekly thing with my son so he can look for used dvds. Grassroots was there for me when I had to unload boxes and boxes of my late husband's books. I must have went there almost everyday to donate them. The folks there will help you if you need it and there was a time there where I thought I'd never physically be able to lift another box of books along with emotionally dealing with the letting go. But once that was over, it's time to bring in the new and Grassroots has a great selection of different books, and dvds. My son scored today and got a couple. Just right off of Kietzke on Grove, they have handicapped parking and it is easy in and easy out. The folks that work there always great those coming in. I absolutely love Grassroots. I buy all my books here. In addition to supporting a local, independant business, Grassroots also offers the best deal in town. I can often buy used books (in great shape) at a very low price and when I don't find it used in the store, I have the option to be placed on a waitlist or have it ordered new at a discounted price. I have done both and usually have the book within days. The staff here are also really really friendly and helpful. There's something to be said about eclectic bookstores. With a huge bookstore in town already, and many people switching to electronic books, I love disappearing in the crowded shelf mazes, of tiny little locally owned bookstores. Grassroots has so much inside, you would have to spend awhile to see it all. I've spent some time wandering and reading...yet I'm always drawn towards the children's book area. That's where I can often times, find books from when I was little. The hungry caterpillar, Clifford the red dog etc. Books I remember reading. My favorite thing to do however is to go to the children's cookbooks section and pick out the cookbooks for my son. I have him look through the pages and pick something out to make for dinner, then we go shopping together, and then we make the dinner together! I loved that they had a whole section of children's cookbooks to choose from, and many more books for people of all ages in many different genres! Always amazing used books and DVD selections for very low prices. They do also have current New Releases for publisher recommended price, BUT, the real gem is to be found in the in warehouse sale. Housed outside in part of their parking lot, you can sift through many literary treasures (and vinyls) most seem curated from private donations. I have found such amazing gems there -- a 1920s edition of Pride & Prejudice is my biggest find. When you are at Costco or REI, be sure to stop by Grassroots Books and peruse through their shelves and boxes. read more

Every time I come into this store, it is an unpleasant experience. The staff act like it's a bother that you're there and they would rather be anywhere else. I have both purchased books from here, and sold books here. Selling books to them is a joke, don't bother wasting your time. They give you a few dollars for multiple books that are worth $20 per book at least. Not to mention, their "buying" hours are always changing, and it's never mentioned anywhere. Why are these hours and days of selling constantly changing?! I would caution people to be customers of this store. I would rather donate my books then to be given a measly $5 for multiple books that have a much higher value. Definitely won't be back. read more

If you're looking for a bookstore that still has that small town book store feel, this is the place to go! The prices are reasonable, they have frequent sales, and every Sunday, they have the five dollar bag sale. This means, in the area where they have the books specifically for that sale, if you can fit it in a paper bag, The whole bag is five dollars. We love these because kids books can get expensive over time, so hunting for a really good kids book is a lot of fun, especially when you find books for yourself! Prices are amazing and staff was super friendly. We even came on their Sunday parking lot sale, fill a bag for $5. After finding at least a dozen books and some workbooks for my granddaugher, we purchased them and decided to walk around outside to there parking lot sale. It's a little tucked away on a side street - you wouldn't know it was there unless you were going to one of the local businesses nearby. Regularly, their used books start at $1.99 and up. New books are priced a little under the standard retail pricing. If you can't find something or want a book they don't have, they'll take the book information and your information and notify you when they receive it. The staff is so friendly and helpful! They also do a sidewalk sale outdoors, where books are as low as 25¢. It's a great place to buy books to donate to classrooms or stock up on books for kids. read more

You wouldn't know it from how terrible I am at writing [reviews], but I grew up a huge reader. I always had my face buried in a book. I won class competitions on books read over summer, or Newberry Award Winners, etc. As an adult, I pretty much stopped reading. I have my phone glued to my hand (ugh, bad habits), but have been utilizing the library's digital reading app. I did buy some physical books a few years ago, and recently decided I could donate them. We have donated to Grassroots in the past, and I've done light shopping before, but today when I donated on one of the first warm days of the year, I was reminded of the awesome power of being surrounded by shelves and shelves of books and words. It feels like they have become more organized, I found it easy to find categories and read titles. They have set up eye catching displays, full of interesting covers, and colorful children's books. I enjoyed how it felt packed and full, without feeling overwhelming. I did notice they sell brand new books now, which I didn't think they did before. I was planning on just donating, but the book appraiser gave me $2 for 4 books, so cool! Not to be cliche, if this place had an awesome patio with flowers, trees etc, and/or a little sitting area and coffee/snack bar, I'd be here all day. The windows are huge and let in a ton of light, and the idea of being surrounded by book, they just make you feel like you're a character in a movie or something. Love supporting small business and the staff were extra friendly and efficient. Will be back to get some witchy spell books and some cookbooks they had amazing deals on! If you can, when buying a book, shop here first before supporting Jeff Bezos! I would imagine the author's get way more money from a book sold here rather than corporate giant Amazon. read more

I heard about this bookstore from a friend, and wanted to visit. I was expecting an unorganized huge stacks of books, as it's a used bookstore. That really wasn't the case. The outside books (cheap!!) are just roughly categorized, but the inside, it is very well organized, and the nice staff can help you find things. What I gathered in my basket was clean, looked new, with no price tags, so I thought they may be full-price. I was fine with that. BUT! They were all $1.99. I was shocked! Moreover, they give away 50 free books to kids (signup required). How nice is that? I wish I lived nearby when I was a kid. My whole household is going to be repeated customers. Grassroots is my go to place for used books. I always have a list queued up in my phone of books I want to read. Every time I visit I find a few on my list for $1.99-$5.99.... You really can't beat that! Also their new books are 20% off of sticker price. The outdoor sales are fun when you have time to browse through all of the boxes. I am lazy though and rely on the organized book selection inside. I'll pay a few extra bucks to easily find what I want. If I could change one thing, I wish they had book buy backs in the evening. They offer buy backs on Thursdays 9-2, I think, so that's hard to make when you work a 9-5 office job. But I manage to get there every once and a while on lunch.
