I cannot believe that i did not know until Discology until today! I have tried looking up record stores in the past few months and only came up with a few places in town but never heard or found Discology but that ended today! I was in line at another record shop for record store day trying to get the Taylor Swift long pond sessions and everyone was there waiting for the same thing. I was in line with people who all wanted it, and we were feeling a bit down since we knew that there were only 12 copies and we were about 30th in line. I was about to give up when someone in front of me said that his wife just got it at Discology and then the person behind me said that her brother confirmed that everyone in line was going to get one so I left the line and booked it to Discology and I am so glad that I did. They had a separate line just for Taylor swift, and I walked right up to the front of the line, handed my money, and received the vinyl! They were so organized it was incredible. This place is a special little place in Reno. When you first walk in it may seem like you are walking into someone's garage but as you continue through the piles of vinyl you will realize there is a method to this madness. The owner is a nice guy! There are all sorts of genres here from rock to rap to soundtracks. Take your time and look through the boxes, there are random goodies in there. The owner showed me a 2Pac and Tha Outlawz vinyl. Pretty cool, I wanted it but he knows his prices. That doesn't mean he isn't willing to bargain with ya. We discussed the reselling of vinyl, and we both agreed Discogs is the best when referencing prices. I'd say this place is pretty spot on with pricing. I found a rare Eminem bootleg vinyl there from a concert he did in the UK but it was a little out of my price range. I'd never seen that one before. You never know what you're gonna find here. I ended up buying a different hip-hop vinyl and left happy. Also at the time I went they only allowed two people in the shop at a time and masks were required, so follow their rules to check out the records. I recently went here to have some old cassette tapes transferred (audio interviews with family members now deceased) to CD's and thumb drives. When David found out how old they were and that they had a strong family sentimental value he promised to give them The work was really well done, it was done promptly and for a reasonable price. While there I also bought two classic music CD's. The only down side is that in transferring the two-sided tape to a CD, it had to be put on two disks. As I have more recordings to transfer, some of which are four cassettes long, this would get unwieldy. So I'm going to stick with thumb drives from now on. I highly recommend Discology for this and other services. read more

This is a very difficult review to write, and I do so with the best intentions for this small store. The owner, Dave, is a nice guy. But this store has problems that I sincerely hope he resolves. First, I'll say what I like about this shop. Despite being a small shop, Discology has a very high "value density" in its vinyl records. Almost every record in the store is highly deserving of a loving owner. The records are always in great shape. Anytime you walk in you can be sure to find something you'll want to take home--and at a good price. Secondly, the (hopefully constructive) criticisms. Vinyl records have made a comeback, in part, because they offer the music lover a chance to interact with their music in deeper, more engaging ways, beginning with the experience of going to the ol' record store. The owner will even go on at length (he's very friendly and engaging) about how the kids these days are missing the experience of record shopping. Yet at the same time the owner makes absolutely no effort to ensure a positive experience for his customers, especially new foot traffic. - The first thing that happens when you walk in is you get barked at by his small dog. And I don't blame the dog. The dog is clearly a timid little animal, but he has it sitting out in the middle of the main hallway, completely exposed. Of course the poor thing gets afraid 30 times a day when a new face walks in. - Record store experience? Not here. The lighting is all gross, blue fluorescent that makes the yellow tile look awful. There is no music, no posters on the wall, no artwork, no flyers for local bands and events, no t-shirts, no nothing. - The place is a mess. There are almost always boxes and storage bins in the main hallway (and the whole place is only a single, narrow hallway). One time there was an old computer from like the '90s in the stack. The last time I was there a young woman was trying to look through the CDs but could barely reach them because she had to reach over boxes of crap. - His CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays absolutely suck. While his vinyl record inventory is fabulous, his digital content selection is terrible. While he actively chooses his vinyl inventory (and he has good taste), all of his digital stuff is sold on consignment for other people. Meaning, the first fact about his CDs is that somebody doesn't want them. I've tried and tried to find a nice new CD to take home but compared to his vinyl selection it's just sad. In conclusion, I really want this place to succeed. When I go downtown for some fun on a weekend or on a date with wife, I really want Discology to be part of the event. But the place is so uncomfortable and awkward that my wife doesn't want to go in. This place has a lot of potential and a lot going for it, including but not limited to a great location and a great record selection. The dog is sweet when it realizes you aren't going to eat it. The owner is a nice guy who doesn't talk down to you, as is often the case at other local record stores. I want this place to be here for a long time, but unless he gets his act together I fear that it won't be. read more

Just wanted to write this one because DAVID at Discology is what's it's all about man! Just a real little shop in the river walk distract in Reno really embodies that old school vintage record store feel. If your a real purist, it's a cool spot to grab a vinyl record still and even if your still into CD versions he's got a solid selection there too. We had a good conversation about the late great Tom Petty and how me and my wife had seen him live just a couple weeks before he died. Yikes! Your first impression will be that of a mess. I thought I had walked into someone's storage unit for a second. Then a man sitting alone inside with his mask on who I hope isn't living in the shop was immediately very hostile. Few times have I been turned off from someone quite that quick, usually they have to hit me. This guy is the single most unpleasant person I've encountered in my 7 months in Reno. His somewhat broken door wouldn't open and he wouldn't help me. Just kept saying turn it. Finally it opened and immediately he said where's your mask. Said I don't have one, do you have one for me? Rather rude like he said no and said I need to get a mask to come in. (By the way going inside just means having to sidestep a bunch of clutter) I said I don't need to come in I have a few specifics in mind and I'd I'll just ask if you have them. He said no way I don't want that cold breeze rolling in and literally shooed me away. I feel so sorry for his husband if he has one. read more

This is a VERY SMALL record shop that is inside what was going to be a Movie Theater ticket office. It's got one of the coolest locations for a record store in the USA, you walk out of the store and the Truckee River is 20 feet away. You can easily walk to this store within minutes from the Reno casinos. The owner David is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and actually curates his collection. There is a new arrival section and a small used section, but behind the counter are thousands of harder to find, more pricey records. Just tell him what you are interested in and you will be able to see it all. Rare Tool vinyl? CHECK Electric Frankenstein 7 inch? CHECK, near 100 of them. OZZY Scream? No More Tears? CHECK Now as I said this store is small but to any real record collector, you should be able to find a gem. The prices are fair. Didn't see anything too outrageously priced and I think if you are buying some records, you may be able to strike a deal. The guy that owns this place is not only insanely nice, but you can tell he really loves music and has a passion for owning this store. He doesn't judge you when you ask for something cheesy, and he seems to have a grasp on tons of different genres. It's the type of place you can go in and feel welcome. There's also a cute dog that's always there, but he can be timid, so tell your little ones to approach in a gentle way. Just walked into this little shop a couple of weeks ago and easily struck a conversation with the owner Dave. While talking to him I looked through the racks of new and used CD'S he had trying to find one from one of my favorite artists. Sadly none in Stock but he tracked one down and ordered it for me right on the spot. A couple of days later he called me to let me know it was in. Otherwise, go in and bring your music conversation. You can find a little slice of new releases (something Recycled Records woefully lacks) along with the hodgepodge of older material. OK, the place gets points for the dog, and the guy who runs the place seems nice, but I came in mainly for laserdiscs (which they have a decent amount of) and I saw none of them were priced. He says he will "check" the prices for me on the ones I want, and asks a reasonable amount for some but says he wants $27 for one because "that's how much it went for on Ebay." Maybe it was worth that much to that one Ebay bidder but I doubt ANYONE who comes into the store will willingly buy it for that much. At the very least MARK your prices beforehand instead of saying straight-out that you're using Ebay as a price gauge; if I wanted to pay Ebay prices I would've just stayed home bidding on Ebay items instead of driving a few hours to your store. read more

I love to browse through all the LPs because he has brand new music as well as classics, some pressed on the 180 gram vinyl which is really cool. Great location, great prices. Besides a large selection of CD's and vinyl records, Dave will archive your audio tapes and vinyl on CDs for a reasonable rate. He takes the time to make sure the CD is of the best audio quality from the medium he is working with. He has found several out-of-print records and CDs for me when they were not listed on Amazon. I must respectfully disagree with Stephanie J below. He is very knowledgeable about most types of music and he keeps up with trends and musicians/musical groups and their activities, and also about what might and might not be available and/or out-of-print. He also has a limited amount of movies on DVD. The one minor drawback is too little space for the amount of inventory he has. Discology is a modest boutique shop on the Downtown River Walk, next to the Riverside movie theater. What a find! It reminds me of "Championship Vinyl", the fictional record store owned by John Cusack in the seminal classic, "High Fidelity", only without the pretense. Very cool, indeed. The store may be small, but the owner has impeccable, diverse tastes and has a knack for pulling out needles (that you desperately want and didn't know you needed) from his impressive haystack! (He also has a very friendly, sweet pup!) In addition to classic rock, classical, etc both used and new, Discology carries vinyl editions of great, contemporary indie rock! I almost fainted when he pulled out the special vinyl addition of the Postal Service's "Give Up" including the 10-year anniversary unreleased tracks...(Ok, ok, I know the album is old now, but I have never gotten tired of it!) This is a store for music lovers and connoisseurs, and an excellent addition to the River Walk District! Vinyl forever!! read more
