Let me start on a good note: working with Eileen was very easy and enjoyable. She's a very nice & professional person who really knows her flowers. She used to live in England, which was perfect for me since I was going for an antique, Downton Abbey feel to my wedding. When I explained what I wanted, she knew exactly what I had in mind, and even pulled out photos from her repertoire to prove it. That really put my mind at ease, and I was so excited that Eileen was doing my flowers. During that first consultation, I told her I wanted to use as many seasonal flowers and greenery as possible to help my budget and to also go with my antique, old-world, autumn theme. She commended me for knowing exactly what I want, and told me that she'd do her best to meet that, which shouldn't be too difficult since what I wanted was in season at the end of October. Upfront, I told Eileen I don't like daisies, I don't like green flowers, and though I do like pink flowers in the spring & summer, I think they have no place in my fall wedding. I wanted the focus to be on the white flowers and greenery (eucalyptus, dusty miller, etc), with berries and blue thistle scattered throughout, and hints of very pale sand and blush tone flowers to liven up the mix. The finished product was anything but! The first time I saw the flowers was seconds before I walked down the aisle. My bridesmaid handed me my bouquet. I looked at it and said "What the hell is this?!" (I'll admit, I did curse a little in the church). My bouquet was pure, bright pink with accents of white and greenery... THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT I ORDERED!!! Worse yet, my bridal bouquet looked exactly the same as my bridesmaids' bouquets, only a little larger... again, SO NOT what I asked for!! Seconds later, the doors of the church opened and the guests rose from their seats. My eyes were not first drawn to my handsome husband standing at the end of the aisle, but instead to the giant, hideous PINK monstrosities that were on either side of him up at the altar. My heart sank! I instantly regretted spending so much money on the flowers. Let's just say the reason I didn't cry during the whole ceremony like I thought I would is because my mind was preoccupied by other (pink) things. I was able to get in the moment, though, and enjoy the ceremony and reflect on the gravity of the vows I was taking. :) The day after the wedding, we returned the rented vases to Eileen (who was not at home) and spoke with her assistant. The assistant informed us that she was the one who made the arrangements for my wedding (did Eileen even approve of what was being done before they were sent out to me?!?!). She said my arrangements were so pink because Grass Roots had 3 weddings to do that weekend and their flower supplier was also short on white flowers when they ordered them 2-3 weeks prior. This remark really made me feel like chopped liver... like my wedding was the dud & last priority of the 3 they did that weekend. WHY DIDN'T EILEEN CALL OR EMAIL ME ABOUT THE FLOWER SHORTAGE?!?!?! I would have been way more accepting on the fact that my flowers weren't going to turn out as expected if I had just received a call. I would have told Eileen to use more greenery and as many white flowers as possible, but NO PINK! Please, no pink!! Now, I'm reading "Photoshop For Dummies" and am trying to figure out how to change all the pink flowers in the wedding photos into white flowers, because my photographer won't do it for me unless I pay her another thousand dollars more. Yeah, NO! The flowers would have been absolutely beautiful had I been married 6 months earlier and really liked pink! I'm not sure if there was a communication error between Eileen and her assistant, or what happened exactly. All I know is that my wedding day (in my mind at least) was so close to being as perfect as possible (since no wedding is perfect) and the flowers were what made it fall short of near perfection. I expected a lot more from Grass Roots, considering that my venue recommended them and they had a solid 5 star Yelp rating. Eileen was super flexible from the moment we first starting talking. We were moving away and I wanted to meet all our vendors in person before we left. I sent Eileen an e-mail and she was able to squeeze me in the next week before we moved and discussed our wedding months before she started planning for the next wedding season. I was a Bridesmaid and wedding coordinator for a wedding at the Santa Barbara Zoo. The Bride had already chosen Grass Roots as the florist because they were a part of the preferred vendors list. Upon our first meeting with Eileen, I felt immediately at ease. Eileen is a gem! She is patient, kind, innovative, creative, and professional. We had a rather unique concept as far as theme and colors were concerned, and Eileen was excited to do something out of the box. The bride and I can both be very particular- picky is an understatement - and expectations were high. The day of the wedding as we climbed the hill to the gardens of the zoo, I was nearly breathless in anticipation to see the "vision" come to fruition. Before we were even at the location- several zoo visitors made it a point to stop the bride and me and tell us that they had seen several weddings at the SB Zoo over the years, and this was one of the most beautiful event that they had seen there. As we came to the garden top, I teared up- truly spectacular are about the only words coming close to what we saw! Eileen and the Grass Roots team had exceeded every dream and idea we could have envisioned. But the real showstoppers were yet to be seen- we arrived at the bridal suite and saw THE MOST INCREDIBLE bouquets I have ever seen- everyone WAS GUSHING at how unique and stunning they were. Throughout the night, I heard dozens of guests remark that this was the most elegant and beautiful wedding they had ever been too- and I can honestly say that a large portion of this has to go to the creative genius of Grass Roots. If they can please this picky girl and bride, I don't know how they couldn't please anyone. Eileen from Grass Roots did the flowers for our wedding in May 2014 at the Santa Barbara Zoo. Since I didn't know anything about flowers but I wanted to be sure that I liked what we ended up with, and because I didn't live in Santa Barbara, Eileen spent a lot of time with me on the phone, patiently explaining different flowers and arrangement types while she guided me through different photos on her website. I mean, she really walked me through it, baby steps, until I felt confident that I knew what we would be getting. Our flowers and my bouquet were perfect. I also wanted some matching succulents to decorate our wedding cake. I told Eileen as well as our cake baker Christine Dahl, and they got in touch and took care of it without me having to worry about it. They worked out beautifully on the cake. One note- I found this one little part of the contract confusing- in hindsight it's totally my bad, but just so no one else gets confused- there's an option for a free toss bouquet or signin table vase, and you circle one. Then there's a separate line for free "Mr. and Mrs." signs to be hung from the back of the bride and groom's chairs. I really don't like the "Mr. and Mrs." decor theme (I'm keeping my name and go by Ms.) and I figured by not circling it I was not signing up for it. On our final contract the Mr. and Mrs. signs were listed with N/C which I stupidly thought meant N/A (not applicable) but I now realize that meant No Cost. So we didn't notice them until the middle of the wedding and they're in some photos, we had to have the co-ordinator discreetly remove them during the reception. Not a huge deal and it's actually really sweet that Eileen provides these free perks and they were all perfectly placed- just make sure you make it clear if you don't want the signs since there's not actually an option to check yes or no for the signs on the contract and there's so much else to think about it was easy for me at least to overlook it. read more

We got married in 10/14 at the Fess Parker in Santa Barbara. Eileen is very knowledgeable, responsive, and easy to work with. She worked within our budget as much as possible. We spent more on flowers that we had anticipated, but we got a good value. The flowers were absolutely stunning, and the arrangements were flawless. The color palette of cool purples and white was what I wanted and so much more. Eileen did a really good job picking the right colors, and she really listened to the types of flowers I wanted. My bouquet was gorgeous! I told her that I liked orchids, but my budget didn't allow for orchids everywhere. Eileen emphasized beautiful orchids in my bouquet which also had calla lilies, and roses. I think the bridal bouquet is very important because it's captured a lot in photos. She is very good at getting a feel for your style and the theme of the wedding.
