I did read the reviews before stopping here, even though the ratings weren't good - my husband & I gave it a shot. The staff was wonderful - very kind, sweet & friendly but how can I say this kindly - the service was so slow! We were on a time schedule, how long can a meal at a small diner take - we waited at least 40-45 mins for our food. The table next to us waited long too, and one person at that table of 8 had to wait about 10 mins more for her meal after everyone else's spottily came out. The hamburger steak was sort of tasty, but the potatoes were fake & did not taste good, and the green beans were out of a can & tasteless. It was all very under whelming. We visited this restaurant while on a visit to the Appomattox Historical District, after first touring the Appomattox Court House Historical Park. it was a non-holiday Monday in Oct, 2022, around 12:30 pm. The restaurant is a quintessential diner, which could be found in many American towns. What's unique about Granny Bee's is the Civil War-themed pictures (for sale) on the walls. Food. (Rating: 3/5). As is our habit, my husband and I shared our food. I ordered the chuckwagon entree (which was a chicken fried steak, with gravy) (3/5), and 2 vegetables ($8.95, lunch menu) -- macaroni salad (5/5) and turnip greens (2/5). This was also served with 3 warm, but dry, dinner rolls. (2.5/5). The highlight was the macaroni salad, which was creamy, delicious, and tasted homemade. The chuckwagon was okay, but was somewhat thin, and tasted bready. The collard greens were watery and bland. Adding salt and pepper helped, and perhaps adding vinegar might have too (it had been offered). My husband ordered a cheeseburger ($6.45), to which he added lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo ($0.50) and French Fries ($2.99). All of these were prepared, and tasted, as expected. (3/5). Service. (5/5). We we're seated promptly, and our waitress was friendly and attentive. Atmosphere. There are 2 large rooms with tables, and there was a steady stream of both sit-down diners and those picking up take-out orders. Most of the patrons appeared to be "local", and were familiar to the waitresses, though it also seemed that we weren't the only tourists. Many of the patrons, while we were there anyway, appeared to be of retirement age. Value. (5/5). These were fair, good-value prices, especially in these inflationary times which has to be hard for small businesses. We overheard a waitress mention to another customer that a large tomato is now costing them $3. One small pet peeve. It had not been mentioned that we would be charged the 50-cents extra (total, not per item) for the lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo for the burger No big deal, but it should've been mentioned on the menu before it appeared on the bill. Some final notes. *The restaurant offered a number of lunch specials, some of which sold out while we were dining. (Examples: salmon cakes; beef-vegetable soup with grilled cheese; Lima beans) *They offered 15 different vegetables to choose from with lunch platters -- from mashed potatoes to fried okra to cole slaw. *A sign at front door said that they offer breakfast all day, but we were not offered a breakfast menu *We overheard that the owner was the only cook in the kitchen. She was running "a well-oiled machine." Food was coming out efficiently. *A small salad bar is available, and the restaurant is using good practices in the continuing COVID environment. Individual items were covered with Saran Wrap, and users are required to wear masks while at salad bar. *Restaurant, and rest rooms, we're clean. The ladies room also had pumpkin liquid soap and lotion -- a nice touch. *We would eat here again if in Appomattox again. read more

We read about this place online and it seemed to have good reviews (it was also recommended on the local pamphlet guide we got while visiting Appomattox Court House). It was very cheap, the service was great and everyone was very friendly and nice. For less than 10$ each, my boyfriend and I had a filling lunch with coffee and water! I took my Grandma 5 years ago and didn't have a great experience, but thought we'd try it again upon visiting the area recently. On a Friday night, we originally chose Mexican, but it was overly crowded so we decided to go here. There was parking right out front, which is more convenient for our toddler. We noticed they have a salad bar, which we didn't try. I looked up the menu before we arrived so there was no wasted time in ordering. I selected the Granny Bee's Special which is a 6 oz ribeye steak with grilled shrimp. Online the price is $17.95. Be advised they've raised the price to $19.99. My two sides were a baked potato and green beans. My husband ordered the hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and green beans and we ordered a grilled cheese for our son, which was not on the dinner menu. You get rolls with your meal. It came out steaming. My husband didn't care for the bread, but I thought it was good (I don't usually eat bread so that might color my perception). Service was incredibly fast. I've never seen such a thin steak in my life, but steaks come in a variety of thickness and the flavor was acceptable and so was the texture. The shrimp were smaller, but I was impressed by the flavoring. The potato had plentiful butter and sour cream and the beans tasted homemade. All in all, I enjoyed my meal. My husband did too, although the mashed potatoes seemed instant to him. Honestly, I've never been in an affordable country restaurant that had real mashed potatoes, so that wasn't a shock. They have real iced tea, while some country restaurants serve instant (please ask and never accept instant). I have been told they have a good breakfast. We would probably visit again while in the area. I don't care for Confederate art, which adorns the walls, but there is a very cute child's drawing framed on the wall I'd love to buy if it were for sale. read more

My boyfriend got the country boy breakfast and it was pretty good. I got a stack of chocolate chip pancakes and they were bigger and fluffier than I anticipated! Ladies that served us were nice. Food was ehh the service was less than that. I stood at the door for five minutes and was never acknowledged I finally asked someone if we just sat ourselves and she said yes. I asked the waitress what she suggested and she literally rolled her eyes and said uhg. I ordered a cheeseburger which was good I got chicken salad which would be good if you like sweet chicken salad I don't and the potato salad was typical store bought mustard sweet potato salad. A fine local diner. Not much to look at, but good solid food. I've eaten here twice now, lunch after a visit to Appomattox Courthouse Monument and breakfast on the way through to the Blue Ridge. Lunch was decent, lots of side veggies to choose from; the navy beans were especially good. Breakfast was surprising; who tops waffles with REAL fruit?! The locals are loyal to this family run, diner. A great place to see friends, neighbors, and catch up on the town's going ons. Country plates, some homemade some not. Grilled items to like ribeye, catfish, and chicken. Always try the homestyle special, if available. Its 99% homemade most of the time. The meatloaf, salmon cakes, fried oysters, fried catfish, and chicken livers are spot on. So is the overly generous steamed shrimp dinner. Breakfast is a guranteed delight! Every small town has a diner like this, familiar faces, a staff who knows what you want before you ask, etc. They are definitely worth a visit or 2 or 3 if you roll through Appomattox. read more

The country ham was too well done and rubbery. A disappointment and bad reflection on Virginia ham. The Lima beans were soggy. Salad bar was so so. The Russian dressing was very good. To top it off they over charged us for the lousy ham meal. read more

Had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and fried apples. They brought me some bread beforehand that was pretty good. The fried chicken was good but needed some more flavor. The mashed potatoes needed more salt and pepper but I like mine a lot more loaded. The apples were okay. They needed to have some cinnamon or something added to it. Overall the food was good and the staff was friendly when I come in, but they never checked on me again after the food was served. The place starting getting busy for lunch after I got there. It's a nice place to try once and I'm sure all their food is good, appeared to be a place of hometown food, but nothing spectacular. Nothing close to what mamaw used to make. Debated about giving it 4 stars, 3.5 would have been appraisal. On a separate note, there was hand sanitizer on each table and the service was real quick. read more

What a delightful, old-fashioned restaurant! It's like what I grew up with in the 50s & 60s. Its not many places you can find beef liver, catfish, beans, turnip greens, stewed tomatoes, and sweet potato . If you want to experience an old time, small town eating establishment, try out this place. They seem to have a familiar group of locals. The customers know each other, too. Good comfort food. The beef liver, smothered in gravy and onion was tender and very good as were the stewed tomatoes and turnip greens. The chuckwagon sandwich was crispy as were the French fries. Decent Breakfast - service was quick and friendly on a Saturday morning! My wife's French toast was great!

We were on our way to tour the Appomattox Court House and grounds when we decided to eat before we dove into the tour. We asked a local at the gas station where we could eat that was local and had great food; EVERYONE in chorus suggested Granny Bee's! When we arrived the sisters were waiting tables and Mom, Verna, was delivering food. Before our meal they brought out a basket of homemade rolls! They were so fluffy and good! We had a bacon cheeseburger and a grilled chicken sandwich. Both were AMAZING!!! The service was not like service, it was more like having your family member over for lunch. It was relaxing and perfect! If you are thinking of visiting the Appomattox Museums, be sure to stop by Granny Bee's and eat! You will not be disappointed! Adorable small town diner! Service was outstanding. The waitress said they have been under new management since January. Only four stars due to peeling wallpaper and such. But if you aren't looking for ambiance and just want good food at a great price where you are treated like family, this is the place. The coffee was smooth and not bitter. The hamburger steak had a nice char on it. Smothered with brown gravy and onions! DH had that with fresh sliced tomatoes and smooth mashed potatoes. It would be most egregious mistake not to stop for breakfast. If you pass up the opportunity ti have the best breakfast in America.
