We were up in Appomattox for a family event and went to grab food. Cute little area and we barked behind the building in a little paved lot. It's a little sparse on the inside, but nothing bad. We ordered our food and it took a little longer than we were expecting for breakfast - maybe around 25-30 minutes, but I also know it's a small place in a really small town so no biggie. Our server was nice enough but a little quiet. I got eggs, bacon, toast, and a pancake. My boyfriend got eggs and biscuits and gravy and our friend got chocolate chip pancakes. It was all pretty good. I'm not mad at it. All together it was around $33 bucks. Being from the city, I thought this was a mistake for 3 people but it was the actual price so that was great. Lunch at the Rail Yard Restaurant was a fun treat! Wait staff was personable and efficient. He didn't rush us as we decided what to order. They have quite a menu and everything looked tempting. We were happy to see they had a light fare section, who wants to over eat lunch! Hubby had a nice wander around looking at the artwork of trains and the model trains, while waiting for our food. Hubby went for a burger and fries. I tried out the meatloaf with gravy and turnip greens. Hubby tried my meatloaf and wished he had gotten that too but he did love his burger. This place was a swell place for breakfast before my visit to Appomattox. I walked in and it's a wide restaurant and quiet in the morning. I sat in the middle where I ordered bacon and eggs with home fries and wheat toast. While the photo you'll see may not have looked like much, it was actually perfect like something id make at home. I enjoyed it very much. The price was shockingly low and I decided that the service should get more than what I paid for the breakfast entirely. I happen to love trains so that was an added plus for me. If I ever do go back, id like to see what it's like at night because they have a bar behind the other door next to the restrooms. Typical small town diner in appearance but this one you can keep on going into Lynchburg. We ordered meatloaf dinner and portion of meatloaf was very skimpy. Fries were ok but did come with gravy as ordered. Fried apples not bad. My friend ordered same but got tired looking canned green beans. Another person ordered steak which looked charred but did manage to have some red in it. Cole slaw inedible and butter beans the same. Onion rings looked good and club sandwich so so. It's definitely a popular place for locals-- and I'd come here for Sunday breakfast every weekend if I were a local. Don't recommend anything here. I normally do not leave reviews because of the struggles a restaurant goes thru these days. However, when the restaurant doesn't even try to do anything to provide quality. Beginning with waiting forever to even be greeted, only to order coffee, and be told it will take a minute to even heat it up. Finally getting to order, while watching people who came in still continued not to be even greeted by anyone. Tables walking out because of this is unacceptable. It doesn't take much effort to at least speak to someone. We got an omelette, and a wrap and waiting 30 minutes after that before even getting it. The omelette and potatoes were greasy, and the wrap looked like they just crammed a soggy salad in a tortilla. No check back with anything we ordered. The mens bathroom looked like it hadn't seen any cleaning products in forever, and the door has holes all in it. Come on people, you have to do better. If you can't, give it up. I understand the owners may be nice people, and probably are very sweet, but their staff cares nothing about caring for or feeding the public. Do better or shut down. This restaurant was a great find and the food and service (Alisa) was excellent. I had the ribs, dry rubbed, and selected my sauce from the selection brought to the table. They were excellent. I've added this little gem to my favorites and when I am in the area again I will definitely stop in again. Oh yes, the sweet tea is very, very, good! The others in my group had the sirloin steak salad, grilled chicken salad, and the railyard steak & cheese sandwich (with the Mac & cheese side). Got a Buffalo chicken wrap and potato salad. Never. Again. Walked in the side door (which is where i parked) with no sign on the door nor inside to tell someone that isn't where any servers are. It was a bar area with a couple booths and game machines. I'd never been here before and I had called in an order. Only one person in there, playing the game machine. And there was a doorway beside the bar that seemed to go to the kitchen and/or bathrooms. Again no signs. I stood there for 20 minutes with not a single sign of anyone who works there. I finally decided I'd go through the doorway, maybe knock on the kitchen door or something, to try and get service. Upon walking through the doorway and further down that hall, I realized there's an entire other side to the place that has restaurant tables. Who knew?! (Not me since there were NO SIGNS.) Finally I see one server for the whole place and I let them know I'm there for a pick up order. I paid around $20 for a tiny Buffalo chicken wrap with frozen Tyson nuggets on it. And some very watery potato salad. Ugh. I ate half the wrap and threw the whole rest of the plate away. I could've gotten better from Sheetz honestly. From the outside it looks like another small town diner, but don't let the looks fool you! The food is fantastic! My husband and I both had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and turnip greens. All very delicious! However, that said, the turnip greens are the best I've ever had and I lived in Savannah, GA! The turnip greens had a light smoked flavor to it, and it wasn't salty. The Key lime pie was obviously home made and to die for! We arrived around 3 pm and Delaney was the only server because two others had quit that morning, but she was on the ball, keeping up with all the tables! Often overlooked and shouldn't be. Incredible breakfast all day, a country diner menu, meat smoker menu, and burger/sandwiches. The dining room is a bit bright from the florescent lighting and service hit or miss, but the food is ALWAYS A PLUS! Came in for a drink and appetizer. The building is older, it looks like they have a bar area and a separate dining area and they had had outdated flyers on the wall. The staff was friendly. The wine I ordered was fine. I ordered mozzarella sticks as well. When the woman brought my order one of the mozzarella sticks rolled off the plate onto the bar tabletop. I love how she picked it up with her bare hand and told me that they wipe the bar so it's clean and put it back on my plate...ummm. I took the mozzarella stick off my plate cause I'm not into that but I did eat the others after I prayed over them ... She saw the mozzarella stick lying on a napkin and she told me she would give me a credit of .83¢ for the one that fell off that I didn't eat. Very disappointed. Handed lunch menu at 4pm. Been here before, but this was not up to my standards. Bbq had a funny taste. The bbq sauce containers were neatly empty and sitting out and drips on container, not appetizing. The order included french fries, but there were less than 20 fries on the plate. More like a lunch serving. We had salmon cakes which were supposed to be homemade, not. Cracker crumb hockey pucks. And again, 20 french fries stringy cheddar and bacon but cold. Waitress gave less than a shit about us, the food took 45 minutes to arrive, and it was wrong when got our order. We had breakfast: eggs (ordered scrambled, got fried), sausage, biscuits, gravy, and breakfast potatoes. The biscuits were very small and had a hair in it and the gravy had an odd garlic powder taste. The potatoes were pretty good and the sausage/bacon were average. There were lots of locals, so we got to listen to local gossip. It took an exceptionally long time to get the food, and again, the waitress wasn't interested in our service at all. Perhaps it was just an off day, but I don't understand the 4+ stars. read more
