They are very polite and seemingly kind. However, horrible communicators and very poor planning. They had accepted our intake information, scheduled my daughter's appointment weeks in advance and then on the Sunday night they cancelled our session via email. I called back twice without a response until the next morning before our appointment and still nothing. Finally I got ahold of someone stating we were only 2 times per month and that there's a waiting list. But they called another provider that's accepting kids. So frustrating! Why take our information, schedule a session and then cancel stating there's a waiting list? I suggest doing more research on third party providers for Kaiser. Apparently certain families aren't worth their time. Not an easy process and they certainly made it more difficult for my family. Single dad, four kids and simply tossed to another organization for whatever reason they deemed. read more

Nancy Barcal has been a Godsend to my family. She has tremendously helped out two of my four of my children with their stuttering. She gives many tools for them to practice and cares for our family unit as a whole. I feel that she has helped bridge the gap regarding communication with my other two children that do not stutter. Nancy takes her time, exploring each child's needs and environment to come up with the best plan to help them in the long run. Nancy has gone above and beyond for our family. We had many issues with one of my high school students teachers. I contacted her and she immediately went to bat for us and we felt like we had a giant in our corner. She was and will always will be an advocate for my kids. Both my 16-year-old and 10 year old are very fond of her. They trust her, which means that they can be themselves and open up. Being a busy mom of four, there have been times where I had to reschedule because I could not make it across town. Instead of canceling the appointment we would have a telephone session. I really appreciate that because she would go above and beyond and make sure that all of their needs were met before getting off the phone. They never felt rushed which I appreciate since each session is charged by the hour. We have been a part of the Granite Bay speech community for the past 2 1/2 years. I feel that the communication between all parties including the receptionist, is open and clear. Throughout the years we have built a relationship with Granite Bay speech. I rarely give 5 star reviews. 5 stars is exceptional. Granite Bay Speech is exceptional. Nancy Barcal, Director and licensed speech pathologist, is exceptional. Why? Nancy is at the sweet spot in life. Not a new grad, with head knowledge and limited experience. Not so old, that she's not up to date with current best practices (not that elderly aren't wise, but in health care, you know what I mean :). I just finished an hour long conversation with Nancy, regarding my daughter. I am a nurse. Yet I didn't realize speech pathologists have extensive training in dyslexia. Nancy's own adult children have dyslexia. Nancy combines her clinical background, current research, and personal experience as a mom, to recommend the best approach for your child. She's personable, enthusiastic, caring, extremely knowledgeable and practical. Woo hoo! That's as good as it gets in my book! I found Granite Bay Speech through the Facebook Inspire Charter School parent group. It's been a god-sent in addressing my daughter's speech pathology needs. I can't imagine a more competent, understanding, warm and caring speech pathologist than Nancy Barcal. Immediately after my husband's surgery he went from a very talkative man to a quiet man with aphasia. He was sent to a speech pathologist at Kaiser (our HMO at the time) who was completely incompetent, arrogant, misleading, and discouraging. After a painful hour of testing, after which she told us "I can't help him" but then wanted to make another appointment, we left angry, not wanting anything more to do with the medical system. However, after a year I felt I needed to do something to help my husband who by now seldom spoke a word. I contacted someone from the National Aphasia Association through emails, and was told to look for a "person-centered approach to therapy" and to ask the potential speech therapists if they: 1) were familiar with using a "life participation approach" to therapy; 2) develop patient-centered goals focusing on those important to daily life; 3) provide communication partner training; and 4) develop personalized visual communication supports. I was told that most speech therapists aren't trained for these and instead focus on generic exercises and puzzles, which we definitely would not be interested in. During my first (free) initial consultation with Nancy Barcal, I didn't have to ask ANY of these questions, since Nancy described her approach which encompassed ALL of these aspects of therapy. She gave me more information in that initial consultation than anything I was able to glean from anywhere else - useful and encouraging information. She can tell just by speaking with someone where they are and what their needs are - she doesn't need to use the standardized tests which are so stressful and frustrating. She was very generous with her time, gave me information about support groups, and even gave me information about other therapists in the area that take insurance. Nancy had been in the medical system for a number of years but was frustrated at the lowering "standard of care" for patients that was insufficient for her high standard of giving each individual the maximum level of care needed. I contacted the other therapists but felt that Nancy was the one that could provide my husband with the best care, and I wasn't disappointed. At the very first meeting she put Richard at ease with her warm and caring personality, smiling and asking him simple questions but quickly responding for him so as not to stress him (so all he needed to do was nod his head in response). She amazed me by getting my husband to speak again! I hadn't heard him speak in about a year and tears filled my eyes which she noticed, and was very empathetic. I was surprised at the number of resources she provided to us, trusting me completely to return these valuable tools - a book which tremendously helped me to understand what my husband was going through; a large box of picture cards to facilitate language; and a binder of language exercises for me to do at home with my husband. She also gave me white boards and sturdy sheet protectors and told me how to use these tools to help Richard communicate with me. Because I was unable to use insurance, Nancy lowered my cost without my asking. She has a vast knowledge of funding resources, does contracting work with medical providers and school districts, and has many ways of lowering costs, including group services and online classes. If you have a loved one recovering from a stroke or other issue affecting language, or a child needing extra help, Nancy Barcal can help you, and she's the best! My 3 year old daughter started working with Kelli in March. We've had a great experience overall with GB Speech. My daughter absolutely loves going to her sessions with Kelli and even works with her well over zoom if we're unable to make it in. I will say I'm most appreciative of the willingness to work with my daughter without face mask restrictions. I had a hard time finding a place willing to work without masks. We absolutely love Granite Bay Speech! Our son is thriving with his therapist and we have seen a huge shift in our sons communication skills. Throughout his first year there, he has learned more than just communication. He knows how to take turns, identify how he is feeling, and he is building self confidence. He is making friends at school, more communicative with his teachers, and an overall happier kid. Even though his class only lasts 45 minutes per week, we are always sent home with tools to reinforce the new skills learned. I also like that parent feedback is a valued part of their goal setting. We have Kaiser and luckily, we got a referral since there were not enough Kaiser therapists available. Our son is now 5 and we know when he hits Kindergarten next fall, he will have a better experience because of speech class with Ms. Heather. My very quiet son had speech therapy since he was 3. He was bounced around in the school system with different therapists, taking a break each summer because he did not regress enough for the school to cover those expenses. As a teen we decided to take him to Granite Bay Speech and pay ourselves. I could tell right away that Nancy Barcal had a lot of experience, did not just give us the same old drills, but recognized his unique difficulties, helped him form the correct sounds and made it interesting. After 6 months I heard more improvement than in the 10 previous years. I love her unique style and ability to get to the heart of what needs to be worked on. I cannot recommend her enough! We saw Nancy after several other SLP's were unable to help our son. He had been in speech therapy for over seven years and never was able to make progress with his severe articulation disorder. After we saw Nancy she was able to correctly diagnosis him with cluttering disorder, which is a rare speech articulation issue. We finally had answers and could get our son the treatment he needs. She is a delight to work with. She treats my son with dignity and respect, even amongst his weaknesses. She is caring and sympathetic with my son and knows how hard he has to try to make his speech the best he can. Our child has high functioning Autism. It was made clear from the first phone conversation that if my child was loud or had behavior issues that he would not be considered for services. Johnnie in the office said we would have to submit his diagnosis papers and they would "consider" our child for services. This was our first red Flag. I do not agree with Nancy and how she runs her business. We missed 2 appointments in almost 2 years and then were let go. One time we were denied service because we didnt pay copays... This upset my child immensly. I asked that they look into our co pays as I was certain we met our deductible for the year. (and I was correct) I asked Johnnie at least three times. But, they claim Kaiser told them incorrectly. Im the end, she sent me a check for the $440 dollars in overpaid co-pays with a finger pointing towards Kaiser for their mistake... and she said in her last email "I was too difficult to work with". I don't complain on a regular basis. Im a full time working mother and a advocate for special needs families in our area. The speech services are good if you have high functioning neuro typical children. Her business model is pretentious and she is quite possibly defrauding people of co-pays. If you catch her, she has some integrity and will pay you back. But dont expect any further services. Naming you business "granite bay speech" when it's located in Roseville.... is CLEARLY code for we "onlly like certain kinds of folk. I suspect we would have have had better service if I wore my Rolex and had our manny drive the Cadillac.... read more

I went to Nancy when I was teenager and she completely changed my life. When I first went, I could not hold a conversation, had anxiety when I spoke, thought that this was my life forever, and the list goes on. I went once a week and each session, I got better and better. Nancy and the staff are some of the most patient , sweet, honest people I have ever had the honor of being with. Nancy showed me different techniques and skills that I could use/practice in my everyday life which helped me overcome my stuttering. We worked through holding conversations, different techniques when struggling with speaking, "homework", etc. She went out of her way, each and every time, to ensure that you are improving. It can get frustrating as a child/teenager not being able to speak "normally" but Granite Bay Speech can help you!! I am now 22 and I speak as if I never had a stutter. To this day, I use the techniques and methods that Nancy taught me in order to be able to speak without a stutter. Nancy and the team cater to each and very patient, knowing that not everyone has the same issues. They are getting paid for one full hour speech session and providing only 40 min. My son missed 2 sessions due to health issues and they discharged him without notifying me. I went into Nancy to have her diagnose some issues with mild slurring and enunciation issues. I had already been given a diagnosis by my Maxillofacial Surgeon surgeon that it might be TMJ from clenching my teeth at night or throughout the day such that my jaws were tired. Nancy methodically went through performing tests and walking me through exercises to improve my enunciation where I had problems. She had actually taken extensive notes for me so that I could practice at home. And offered to transcribe the notes to a word document so that I can have them any more clearly written format. I told her it was OK just to remind me via a text the more important exercises that I could perform at home. But I think she really wanted me to have the word document to capture everything we talked about. Unfortunately her copy of the hand written notes was misplaced. So I set up another office visit so we can go over the same things again and she offered to meet with me at no charge. This time she allowed me to record our conversation and take the hand written notes with me. I found Nancy overall to be very relatable, cooperative and provided detailed advice for me. read more

The last almost 8 years my son has gone through a lot when it comes to his speech. He's had surgeries to remove his tonsils and adenoids. He's had tubes put it. He has had 4 speech pathologists. Some were great, some were definitely not. Lucky for him his last one was by far the best one. The past 3 years my son has seen Mrs. Lori Barbaccia. She has been the most helpful and caring speech pathologist my son has had. She understands his personality better than most. He looked forward to seeing her and having fun while building on the skills he needs. They enjoyed each other's company and that makes all the difference. She has gotten him to a point where he no longer needs to take speech. His speech will never be perfect but he has worked so hard to get to this point. My son receives services at Granite Bay Speech. We have had experiences with several therapists and they were all great. We especially love Mike! He is patient with my very active 1st grade son and helps him to stay focused during his sessions. My son was tongue tied and struggles a great deal with articulation. We have seen amazing progress over the past year as Mike has worked with him. Previous speech therapist (through Kaiser) left my son feeling defeated and frustrated. I have waited a long time to write this as i have wanted to spend some time to reflect since my time at this company. Now since time has passed, I can say that Nancy Barcal has always been an issue with me and my son. For many reasons. Although, I have overall liked the staff and enjoyed seeing everyone's faces in the office, I barely saw Nancy. I do believe the old office manager, Taylor, was pompous but when she left and the young lady Laretta took over, we had no issues. After seeing numerous staff changes, I can see that the director is the issue. My son has seen two SLPA's at this company and the first one was amazing, but, the second one was consistently going outside of her scope as a SLPA. I have a list of things I could document this SLPA doing outside of their scope because they thought they could as a student, but knowing this should assure you that the SLPA's at this office have very minimal supervision and are not clear what is in or out of their scope. The only reason I gave this company 2 stars instead of 1 is because the office manager and the young lady with black hair always happily greeted me and would not only talk to me, but my son as well. Only the highest praise for Granite Bay Speech! The owner and her staff are exceptional and as caring and competent as they come! We have been with them for the past 7 years and drive an hour each way to have our sessions there once per week. Around the age of 3 our daughter was not progressing with language the way that a typical child might. We felt guilty and feared that we had waited too long to seek help and that precious time might have been lost. My family is extremely thrilled with Granite Bay Speech, in particular Kimberli Door, speech pathologist for my grandson, who has autism. Two years ago, he was shy and not very talkative. Under Kim's amazing tutelage, he has blossomed. Kim is very warm, personable, and caring. The sessions include a learning part in which they learn a new skill, such as how to start a conversation, and then a game or activity to reinforce the new skill. All the boys in the group love the sessions and are always thoroughly engaged. The parents and grandparents can hear the squeals and laughter down the hall. The activities are brilliantly crafted to perfectly sync with the lesson. Kim has developed an incredible inventory of these games and activities herself. Our 16 year old son has been receiving speech therapy services with Nancy and Giana for almost 1 1/12 years now, and we couldn't be happier with the results. The staff is very caring and patient and really listened to our needs. They were able to focus the therapy on the exact issues we discussed, and our son has seen dramatic improvement.
