Found this place looking for nearby pizza restaurants while at a Lowe's. Never heard of it but it was close by and decided to give it a try. I order takeout from here fairly regularly. I ordered a baked pasta dish that was supposed to include meat in the sauce & there's no meat to be found. I'm a girl who needs her protein & meat & was starving by the time I got my order. Probably will be again later due to lack of meat in my pasta. Went for the location in Horizon Village on 5/16, hankering for a hot sausage and pepper hero. First, I found solidly positive reviews on Yelp by others regarding this sandwich (as well as others), used the on-line ordering system which was easy, and it even gave me an exact ready time for pick-up (and it turned out to be ready @ 5:58 exactly as predicted!). Now that was some really good pizza. About eight of us decided to grab dinner here before heading to the movies. Grandma's actually had a table set up for us before we arrived. There seemed to be only one woman holding down the fort, but she managed to maintain the entire floor in good style. Including the handling of a steady stream of folks picking up to-go orders. And whomever was in the kitchen was doing their job with alacrity. The pizza itself was fantastically good. We had a pizza with mushrooms, olives, and meatballs. The meatballs were a winner. It's a small place that's better suited to take out. What I had tasted fine but one thing I had a bit of issue with is that they don't bring your order to the table you're at. They make you go back to the counter to get your stuff, so why am I expected to leave a tip. A tip is for service, not the cooking of food. That's what salary is for. Not a bad pie! I placed a pick up order for a large cheese pizza, baked ziti (on another Yelpers reco) and some side salads. Paid $41. All the food arrived home kind of hot. I ended up nuking my ziti for a minute. The food was tasty. The pizza does remind me of the NY taste. The salads were pretty big, probably one salad was enough for two. WE used to get grandma pies probably two times a month. The whole family enjoyed it which is hard to do. Last couple of times the pizza was droopy not floppy. The cashier was hella rude by slamming a stack of pizza boxes in front of my face and next to my ear. It was very loud and abrupt. He did it twice. He didn't even say excuse me and didn't apologize. Sometimes everything in Atlanta looks the same to me, esp. in this part of town, like some repeating background in a TV driving scene: homes, gas station, mini-mall, park, repeat. Looks can be deceiving. Even though I walked up to a passionless strip mall storefront, when I walked thru the door I was transported back to every pizza place in NY. Not what I saw, rather what I smelled. The delightful simple smell of that pizza oven and I was back in every beloved pizza place from New Haven to New Jersey. While not a completely authentic experience (they say it's due to the water) the pizza from Grandma's was as close as you can get to the real thing. By the pie or by the slice (even Sicilian) enjoy! When looking for lunch, the recommendation of Grandma's NY pizza came up, so I said sure, why not? We went in for a to go order on a weekday afternoon and carried a few slices with us. Grandma's Pizza has displays of some of their slices that they can pop in the oven for a few minutes to heat up, but they also have slices they can simply make for you too. I decided on a couple of the pre-made slices. Those slices were the Margherita slice ($3.49) and the White ($3.49). I also got a bottle of Sprite Zero ($2) The white slice came with Ricotta and Mozzarella only, and the ricotta were in little humps all over the pizza. This one was fairly bland to me and I wouldn't order it again. The Margherita, which comes with mozzarella and fresh sliced tomato was only slightly better. I say that because while it had some flavor to it, it just didn't taste done to me and seemed to need another 5 minutes in the oven. The slices were nicely sized, thin and were filling. I don't think I could've had a third slice. I found out after my card was already ran that Grandma's has lots of deals. One such deal that I didn't know about was 'Any 2 slices and you get a free drink'. That would've been a cool heads up to save a dollar or two (was told I could get that the next time) Located in the strip that houses the Movie tavern and a few other restaurants, parking is shared, so there's no real concern for finding a spot. There seemed to be lots of seats inside also, but there were just as many to go orders as there were sit down customers. Grandma's NY pizza does serve a purpose for giving you cheap, filling pizza...if you get the proper deals. Flavor just wasn't there for me this visit though. Maybe it was an off day for the cooks, I don't know, but I do know there's enough good pizza competitors close by where it may be a while before I head back this way. read more
