This is a great place to take kids! We love bringing our 2-year-old daughter here for dinner. The owners are so sweet with her, and they always bring out a special little toddler-friendly snack. Thoughtful touches for the grownups too, like key limes with a cute little squeezer to add fresh lime to your fish tacos, and frosty glasses for the beer. This is representative of the name and what would be prepared for a weary traveler in grandma's kitchen in the traditional mexican style. I can't say enough great things about this place! We came for dinner and were welcomed by warm and inviting service. "Grandma" was celebrating her birthday so her son was running the restaurant. Such a great guy! Service was impeccable, fast, and kind. The chips came with red and green salsas, both delicious. We ordered sopas, tacos, and tostadas and couldn't have been happier! This place has some truly authentic mexican food. As a boy who came from mexico at a young age i truly recommend this place. Stopped in early on a weeknight, and had one of the nicest dining experiences I can recall. The entire meal I felt as though I was a guest in Grandma's home. I was greeted warmly by Manuel who made welcome suggestions as to the house specialties. After taking my order, he brought me small samples of several other items, and all were delicious. This is authentic, flavorful, handmade Mexican food. My pibil (pork) tacos were outstanding, cradled by excellent fresh tortillas. I wish I'd had room for more! We came in with a Party of 10 and asked to go Family Style with one of everything on the Menu. It was all phenomenal. Since moving from New Mexico it has been hard to find authentic Mexican food this place is wonderful. Grandma was making fresh tortillas with each new plate of food. So much yum here without the huge portions. The green salsa was amazing and guacamole was citrusy and refreshing. Would have gone back for lunch the next day but they were not great about keeping to their posted hours. I also suggest reservations if ya want a table on Friday or Saturday after 6. Traveling through Walla Walla on our way from California to Montana and stopped for dinner. This place is simply fantastic. Tacos, in particular the pibil with onions pickled with habanero and fresh sour cream on a home made tortilla, were amazing. In addition, the customer service was top notch with a warm and friendly environment great for families. After eating Mexican food habitually in California for 40 years, I would say that La Cocina de la Abuela should not be missed if you are in town. read more

I have been looking for a good burrito here in Walla Walla for almost the entire time I've lived here and this place has it! A little on the big side, but so flavorful and fresh.The host was very friendly and Grandma was very sweet as well. The tables and chairs need a little work, but overall, it is a wonderful place to get fresh, authentic Mexican food. They even give you candies after you meal! A Flavor Gem - This small restaurant off the main street in Walla Walla is amazing. We were there on a Thursday night and had the place to our selves until 8pm.This is not your typical TexMex restaurant. They serve authentic central Mexican foods. The emphasis is on flavor and freshness, not lots of refried beans and cheese.Once first choses the type of tortilla or tostada, then the fillings. The preparations are all fresh, of reasonable size and served promptly, even later when their were more guests. The flavors are fresh, special and savory. The sauces are available on or at the side. We had pulled pork and chicken, each with special sauce. WOW! The service was personal and informative. Grandma did much of the preparation. This a treat you do not want to miss. read more

Good, authentic, home-cooked food. Ignore reviewers who complain about this small family business occasionally running out of food. Yes, it happens sometimes because the food is that good. They may get extremely busy and sell so much that options can be limited if you get there too late in the day on a weekend. You may also have to wait a bit for your food, but this because it comes from a kitchen, made by Grandma or her son and not the staff at Toxic Hell or other fast-food taco outlet. The nopales are tasty, as are the various varieties of tacos. We have had the quesadillas for family picnics in the park. The salsa is actually flavorful and Horchata is fresh-made (not from a carton or dispenser). Have a little patience, enjoy your food and appreciate the people who make it for you with such love.
