Grand Slam is reasonably priced, fast and open until 11, but definitely no-frills. As Jesse M. mentioned, they don't sort, and their house detergent is pretty harsh. Then too, read the fine print on that "50 Cents a Pound!" sign in the window; that's only after the first 8 pounds.
Another con: there's a step to get in and an outward-opening door, both of which conspire to make getting in unaided with a large load of laundry well-nigh impossible.
All that said, this place is really reliable and the two older ladies are very nice; they've always been accomodating about using my own detergent and have even worked with me to figure out the best way to soften up new Dickies! We always have nice convos about the neighborhood, weather etc.
Then there's the highly efficient younger lady, who's fierce and furious and contemptuous. I can't tell if she has a particular antipathy towards me, or whether she has contempt for all of us lazy and entitled enough to drop off our laundry. Either way, I've never managed to avoid getting snapped at, and my feeble attempts at small talk have met with the scorn they deserve.
Because in some way deep in my soul I feel this woman is onto me, I have become obsessed with gaining her approval. I went so far, last week, as to bring her a batch of brownies. This threw her off slightly, but when I next came in with my laundry a few days later, expecting the royal treatment, the only words directed at me were, 'I haven't got all day - put your other bag on the scale already!' and I slunk out, defeated. read more
