I actually found this coffee roaster about two and a half years ago. My love of coffee was forever changed. I used to be one of those people who thought they were coffee snobs while getting whole bean coffee from the bulk bins at Meijer (I chuckle now as I write this). The Saturday Experience is excellent, and I learned so much about how coffee is grown, harvested, dried, roasted, and the different flavors. It truly is a field trip. Craig is a great teacher and is truly passionate about what he does. It shows in the quality of his coffee. It is incredibly smooth, full of flavor, and the customer service is incredible. Come to the shop, meet Craig, drink some of the best coffee around, and you will walk away with a new friend, some knowledge, and coffee to share with your friends and family (if you are willing to share!), and you will easily be able to convert others to REAL coffee. My first purchase was the El Salvador Direct Partnership, and is a great Vienna (smooth bold) roast. I also strongly recommend the Kenya AA, another incredible and flavorful fresh roasted coffee. The coffee here has a lower acidity so it is much easier on your system. No more sacrificing the body to get that daily dose of caffeine. This is one of Grand Rapids best kept secrets! During the week they are only open and working for industry professionals buying coffee in bulk and for restaurants-- but every Saturday until 3pm it is open to the public. The place is hard to find, and it is an adventure just getting there. In what looks like an old abandoned warehouse you walk up 5 flights of stairs (follow the smell of coffee) to a room that just smells of roasting cherry pits (coffee). They have free samples of coffee and expresso and the owners/staff are so passionate about what they do that you will be a coffee expert after just one visit. They have 10-15 bins filled with raw unroasted beans and you can get them roasted right in front of you in quantities of 2lbs or more. The variety is great and while you wait you can lounge around on their sofas drinking awesome coffee. It's a fun experience and honestly can't imagine going back to ever buying coffee at the grocery store. read more

Stumbled into to bit of coffee heaven... I'm speechless. I was looking for coffee to bring to family in California that would impress them and this is the place - they have the product, knowledge, expertise and love. Love for coffee and a desire to share that love with their customers.. The owner and staff answered my questions ( I had many ), they made helpful suggestions, and really seemed happy that I was there (it was close to closing time). I had so much fun buying coffee and the prices are reasonable... I say buy, buy, drink more coffee, and buy more coffee again. I had a video I wanted to share, will post when I figure out how but please note... they were roasting various small batches while I shopped. Freshness and top quality is found here so they roast by request and in small batches. The place is a very clean, bright and airy warehouse type environment. I could see huge bags of green coffee beans waiting for their time to get roasted. They had bins of single sourced green coffee beans, labeled by country, farm, type like organic, fair trade, bird friendly etc. near the beautiful coffee bean roaster. So pretty! read more

My wife and I love coming here! We come every 2 or 3 weeks and get 2lbs of coffee hot and freshly roasted every time. I'm not sure why there are 2 dollar signs for the price. I've never found a better price for fresh roasted coffee *anywhere*. They have the most competitive prices I've ever seen. And once you've tasted fresh roasted coffee there's no going back to the other stuff. Until writing this review I had forgotten that there even was other stuff. Also, you can bring in one of your old charbucks or other competitive mugs and trade it in for a classic shaped GRCR mug. The roastmaster Craig is definitely a plus for this place too. He's a very hospitable host and makes you feel very welcome. And he teaches at length about anything coffee related you could ever want to know. The Saturday Experience is a really fun and enjoyable time where you can wait for your coffee to roast while sipping some free samples of coffee and enjoying conversation with your roaster and other visitors to the shop. I stopped in this past Saturday for their "Saturday experience'- it's a few hours during the week that they take a break from just roasting for commercial customers, and they are open to the public. Located on the 5th floor of a seemingly abandoned building (that's not abandoned at all actually, there are a whole bunch of businesses tucked away inside), the Saturday experience is warm, charming, and feels like having coffee at a relatives house. The area has mismatchy chairs and tables that look like they were at your neighbors house growing up, and on one side you have a wide variety of coffees sales items and on the other side of you, you'll see the coffee roaster and their beans for production. Literally everyone that walked in the door had a smile on their face and we chit chatted with strangers like they were old friends. During our visit we each had a cup of coffee and went home with chocolate covered espresso beans, a bag of their coffee beans, and a tip on where to find chicory coffee (something they didn't have but graciously gave me a lead on where to get it). Just finished a 6 state Great Lakes region road trip with 2 of my elementary friends. It was nothing but top notch beer, food and coffee. GR Coffee Roasters was one of the true gems of the trip. They are only open to the public on Saturdays until 3 PM, and they are located on the 5th floor of an industrial building which is very, very cool in and of itself. Craig the owner is awesome! He gives you all the time in the world to explain the roasting process all the while you are drinking samples of their coffees from totally random mugs that have been donated by past customers. We ended up buying 2 lbs. of Ethiopian Harrar coffee and stood next to Craig and his roaster like little kids. Our trip ended back in Ohio on Sunday evening, but for the remainder of the drive, our van was filled with the wonderful aroma of freshly roasted coffee, and as I type, I am enjoying my first cup, a remarkable cup I might add. read more

I'll admit, the first time we went here, we thought the location was maybe a little sketchy. But once you go up a zillion stairs, you find an almost secretive, quaint, little coffee shop! We LOVE the coffee here. It's a little pricey ($12+/lb) but it's totally worth every penny! It's the freshest coffee you'll ever have! Our favorites are the Kenyan and the Ethiopian! Yum! The caffeine kick off of these fresh coffee beans will put a big pep in your step! We will never buy our coffee anywhere else!
