They have a wide selection and I can usually find all of the groceries, spices & other ingredients I need. The prices tend to be reasonable. The produce section is good - not the most vast selection, but reliable. The bakery is good, as are the prices. It's as good as you can get in this area without going to a dedicated bakery. (In my experience, the cakes at the Stracks on 169th have always been fresh, unlike the stale cake I've taken back to East Chicago Strack's bakery) They have a sushi counter with a sushi chef who prepares things in-store. They also carry some other ethnic foods - Mexican brands, a few carribean spices, some Asian foods, frozen Perogi, etc. The employees are generally helpful and friendly. The recent remodel has improved the ambiance, and the store re-set has made it easier to find most things. While Whole Foods May have some fancier or more exotic items, this Strack's has a wide variety of reliably fresh, affordable groceries for people with normal incomes. While Aldi has more bargains on staple items, and some organic foods, you can do all your food shopping at Stracks and not break the bank.

What makes JQ so incredibly exceptional is the fact that he was literally on his way home & off the clock, had almost made it to the door when I ran into him & asked his assistant. JQ turned around and led me to what I needed and gave me a recommendation as well‼ This is what I call going above and beyond the call of duty, excellence and passion in motion‼ Thank you Meijer for employing such & amazing talent‼

Pete's saved my daughter's graduation party!…read more I don't live in Chicago anymore. But most of my huge family still lives on the South Side. My daughter just graduated college, and we had the party planned for last Saturday. Long story short......my phone died while at the Cubs game on Friday. Woke up downtown on Saturday to a message that the place I had planned to cater from couldn't do it (nice....but that's for another review). I called Pete's. Becky in Customer Service couldn't have been more accommodating. This place is incredible - I really wish we had a Pete's in So Cal! Picked up all the food (even had fresh baked rolls right out of the oven). I had a lot of family asking where I catered from. I told them the story (and found out the place I was originally going to cater from has gone DOWNHILL in quality - so everything happens for a reason). All I can say is the food was INCREDIBLE. Mostaccioli with marinara sauce, sausage and peppers, Italian sliced beef, broasted chicken - amazing! I'm fairly certain Pete's has won my family's catering needs. At least I hope so!! Shout out again to Becky from Pete's in Customer Service who went out of her way to make this an incredible party!

See, this is where my daughter swims for Illinois state swim competitions (high five if anyone else has a swimmer kid on a Michael Phelps diet), but I digress. There's certainly some humor of "but it's not in Illinois". But that's not why we come here. That's not why it gets real in the whole foods parking lot. Anyway, this a great location, everyone is helpful, and notably there is (of course as matters to me) a decent salad bar and a good amount of vegan options. Otherwise, I would not be coming. One thing of note though that I have needed many times is caffeine. They have a cold brew concentrate that uses a teaspoon or so for a cup of coffee! So read those words carefully: concentrate. That means, don't drink that whole bottle or you'll die, yo. That would be like a Futurama fry 100 cups of coffee moment. Or a Panera lemonade moment. There are some fun food options not at whole foods but in this area, and the pizza place nearby is also pretty epic. But you can't go wrong with whole foods, generally.
