The grocery store is good. I guess it doesn't matter which SV you visit? The prices are quite high!. The problem was the Rewards Program. I decided to submit an application Online. The basic Name, Phone Number, and email address questions were asked (But?) When it was time to submit the process? I read the "Privacy Act". SV will "Share" your personal information with 3rd Party companies; Such as: Your application information. Also? Your Birthday, Driver's License Number, and Social Security number. They also monitor your Web Browsing, when you visit their site. Now you will be subjected to: Telemarking Calls and Emails from everyone. Once I saw read this?. I immediately closed out. I was in the area and needed to pick up a few items. The store was clean and aisles are wide. Staff in the store and the bakery were nice. I guess they aren't that busy of a store since I saw quite a few things marked down to pretty cheap. They had almond or soy milk for like $0.99. I have a love/hate relationship with this place... The manager of this place (Gibbs) is a good dude, works his ass off and keeps the store clean and organized.. I love this place when they have big sales.. The problem is when you get to check-out...most of the cashiers are friendly which is great; but it also slows many of the cashiers and sometimes it takes forever to get though the lines.. Lately it seems as if they might be understaffed; with few lines open...management only calls for "extra help" when the lines get out of control.. There does not seem to be enough carry-out/baggers also... This trend started happening recently...and often I've had to help bag my own stuff just to get out of there..that's when the lines back up If VT can just fix that problem they would get a much better review. Strack and Van Til's on 169th is currently (2019) the best all around grocery store in Northern Lake County. They have a wide selection and I can usually find all of the groceries, spices & other ingredients I need. The prices tend to be reasonable. The produce section is good - not the most vast selection, but reliable. The bakery is good, as are the prices. It's as good as you can get in this area without going to a dedicated bakery. (In my experience, the cakes at the Stracks on 169th have always been fresh, unlike the stale cake I've taken back to East Chicago Strack's bakery) They have a sushi counter with a sushi chef who prepares things in-store. They also carry some other ethnic foods - Mexican brands, a few carribean spices, some Asian foods, frozen Perogi, etc. The employees are generally helpful and friendly. The recent remodel has improved the ambiance, and the store re-set has made it easier to find most things. While Whole Foods May have some fancier or more exotic items, this Strack's has a wide variety of reliably fresh, affordable groceries for people with normal incomes. While Aldi has more bargains on staple items, and some organic foods, you can do all your food shopping at Stracks and not break the bank. read more

I've been shopping at this store since the 1980s, when they even had a video section in the back! I can't find anything to complain about, the cashiers are professional, and work in a decent manner. Van Tils grocery stores have the best Customer Service - best produce, meat selections, odds and end items for your favorite recipes. If they may not have an item - go to the customer service desk and request it. I love it while I am shopping to see those who have an injury or are not able to walk using their electronic carts. Everyone needs to grocery shop, and not all stores carry all of the selections that Strack & Van Til's carries - that is why I rated them with 5 stars. Also, if your item is on sale and sold out - be sure to stop at their customer service desk and ask for a raincheck - they will let you know when it is in or have that raincheck on you when you go back to shop - your raincheck will be valid with your next shopping experience. read more

The best thing about this Van Til's is that their donuts are behind the counter, meaning you have to order them like you're at a regular shop, like Munster Donut. A little less convenient, but you don't have to worry about some 8 year old little monster sneezing all over everything two minutes before you're making your selections. I originally rated this store 4 stars, but I have to knock my review down to 2. This store was great for a long time. It's close to my home, they had the things I needed, and the people were friendly. After a period of uncertainty when it was thought Van Til's might close stores, new business arrangements were made and the stores were saved. They upgraded the store and added some new things. It looked good for a while. Then they started to tweak the purchasing. One by one the things I went there for disappeared from the shelves. It's almost comical... it seems like a conspiracy. If there's something I buy literally every week, it's the next on the chopping block. I just found out from the butcher they have discontinued filet mignon. Seriously? I guess my gourmet tastes are not the right demographic, although they do sell sushi and craft beer (ick). This store has literally left me with nothing to buy from them. I don't have time to plan a stop here, only to find out I can buy maybe 40% of the items on my list. I am forced to go to other stores further away to buy the things I want, so I'm not going to go here just for a few cans of soup or a bag of chips. I will just have to drive further and get everything somewhere else. To the management... when you consider dropping items from your store because of a slim margin, you should also consider whether you are driving away customers. You obviously want brand loyalty... you are not as cheap as Food4Less and not as pretentious as Whole Foods, but you try to appeal to certain kinds of middle class shoppers. I love this Van Til's! Every time I go there I see smiling faces on the cashiers. The other workers staying busy around the store don't seem to mind one bit if you stop them to ask where things are; often times they will even show you! I have been shopping at Van Til's for years. Recently however (last 6 months) it seems that everytime I go the employees are rude and even argumentative! Today my husband asked for someone to help him in groceries and one of the employees asked another to help. THAT employee gave the other a dirty look behind my husband's back! Last week the items I bought that were suppose to be on sale rand up regular. And when the manager came over she just argued with me even though the store had the wrong product on the sale shelf! To top that off in her adding and voiding items she charged me for 3 items I didn't even buy. When I called the other manager he didn't even apologize! About a month ago, I was in line in the bakery and the worker named China rubbed her eyes for like a minute with her fingers and asked what I needed before washing her hands. When I asked her to wash her hands she gave me a totally snotty attitude and now rolls her eyes everytime I come in. (I did speak with someone about this but obviously they didnt follow up) Over the summer a bagger yelled at my 9 year old for bagging groceries the wrong way. I give this store 0 stars. the meat is usually within a day or two of expiring, I freeze it but a few times it was spoiled when I thawed it out. They also leave all the register lights on making the customer look for the little red sign lower on sign to see if register is open or not which slow down process of getting out. I would rather drive out of my way to go to another store. There are always reasons why a store isn't as busy, I will pay less somewhere else and even though wait in a little longer line not be so frustrated when I leave. read more

Went to Van Til's hoping to buy chicken from the deli while picking up a few things. It was 6:30 on Friday Jan 28. They didn't have any sides! All out of potato wedges, mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. The corn was a brown color...bleh. So I left with out it and stopped somewhere else. Wed Feb 5th my husband thought he'd do me the favor of picking up chicken so I didn't have to cook on my birthday. The chicken was so dried out parts of it couldn't be eaten. The potato wedges I am pretty sure had been under the heat lamp for a week. Really gross. I guess we'll have to quit thinking we can get chicken at Van Til's and start getting it somewhere else. read more
