Alrighty another Chinese buffet, supposedly from what I heard this is the "replacement" or "new location" of the other Chinese buffet that closed being across the parking lot where Dillards is (now it's a small Jollibee fast food joint); that's what my moms friend said but I don't think it's a fact but I'm unsure. So I was here twice.. I was there last week and the first time was when it opened. Well, I can say the sushi improved a bit because when I went in the first time you got some pieces of rice (outer layer maybe) that was crunchy. Asides from all that there is a grill section gathering your meat, noodles and veggies and having it cooked fresh, your sushi area and the rest of the buffet food already cooked in the back and brought out. Now what's cool about this buffet are chips; tortilla chips maybe and I think there's a ceviche dip.. I'm not sure because I haven't tried it but maybe I'll go in once more and try it. Of course you're seated by a waitress and drinks are brought out to you here rather than self serve. Good seating and still new of course and tricky parking and traffic going in and out may be a challenge. Do I often go out this way? Not quite not really at all but maybe for watching movies at the older theater off west lane - can pretty much stop by to eat afterwards if I'm up for it. First time here at this location. I came with my friend to try their lunch dishes. I'm happy they chose their location since it has a lot of parking! The restaurant seems clean, neat and tidy! That's a plus! Everything is organized. For an adventurous diner like me, I absolutely love their selections. The octopus, snails, and crawdads were my favorite! For about $20, I had my money's worth! They even have Japanese sushi and a "build your own" stir fry station. That's another plus. Only complaint I have is that you pay first and they automatically ask for tip on the prompt screen. Our servers did not ask if we wanted refills nor did they check up on us as much. So why ask for tips ahead of dining? Noticed some of them on their phones while on the floor also. That's horrible! All in all, I would come back again. As someone that grew up going to the old grand buffet, I was disappointed in my experience at this new location. While certain aspects of the experience remain unchanged like their ice cream machine or their signature crab legs, the quality has decreased. I came in during dinner, not too busy. Service was good and pretty indifferent from what I remembered back then. The food options has expanded and is comparable to Beijing Buffet with the added sushi selections. One major factor for my 3 stars was the crab legs. The crab legs is now served on ice and is cold unlike how it was back then. However when I got a piece of the crab and cracked it open, it was slightly frozen, not to mention the amount of water that comes out whenever you crack it open. Perhaps I'm blinded by nostalgia but serving the crab on ice instead of the old hot water definitely affects the taste. The sashimi was moderately good. It's what you can expect from an all you can eat. I do see myself returning to this buffet, but if you're someone who's planning to come here and expecting old memories, keep your expectations low read more

Everything was greasy like they were deep frying the same oil from last week. Nothing had flavor it just felt heavy and sad. We eat at Chinese spots all over the country and this felt like straight up mall food court energy but worse. The selection looked weak and whatever was out did not look fresh at all. Second time coming to the grand opening of Z & J Grand Buffet -- they really knocked it out of the park! The seafood spread was insane and everything looked and tasted super fresh. We loaded up on beautiful oysters on the half shell (plump, briny, with fresh lemon -- some of the best I've had at any buffet), thick slices of salmon sashimi, giant crab legs, lobster tails, and even spicy crawfish stir-fried with broccoli and green beans that were perfectly seasoned and so addictive. The fried items were crispy, the mussels were juicy, and there was a nice mix of sushi rolls and other hot dishes too. Ended the meal with some sweet tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) -- such a nice touch! The place was buzzing with excitement for the opening, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the whole vibe felt clean, modern, and welcoming. For a brand-new buffet, the quality and variety were seriously impressive -- especially for seafood lovers. We left stuffed and happy, and I'm already planning my next trip back. I was there just this last Thursday just to see and experience the hype about this newly opened buffet restaurant and I am just giving you my honest opinion based on my personal experience regarding the overall food quality, service, and the whole nine yards. First the food which is the most important. Quality of food is about 3-1/2. Sushi's rice is hard it's more like a left over rice from day before. Buffet line is so filthy but i am not putting the blame on them, it's from the customers who's like perhaps needs a little bit of manners, however, as a business serving foods, i feel that they have the obligation to monitor not just the area in general but most especially the buffet line. Drippings from foods are everywhere outside the trays and they should clean or wipe it out from time to time. We went at dinner time so the menu are mostly seafoods so i am not complaining but the chef or the cooks are not cooking fast enough. A lot of trays are either empty or almost empty and that's why people keeps on going in circles just to find a tray with food to eat and that makes the buffet area too crowded. Soup is served in a tray rather than in a stainless steel soup pot just like other buffet restaurants. Not enough pancy deserts offering and it's mostly cookies and jello, not much fruits either. The place is so crowded where tables are too close from one another. You'll be sitting shoulder to shoulder from the other party behind you, not enough room to go through in between. The drinks are served by their crew so in a party of 8, there is no other way to know what you're going to drink unless you take a little sip on it. Again my rating is based on my personal experience and I hope that they should read more comments like this to make improvements so they won't disappoint a lot of potential customers but for now, i will stick to Beijing Buffet. read more

I am seeing a lot of negative reviews coming from very pessimistic people given the reviews they give other restaurants. I recently went there on Sunday & the food was amazing!! It was super affordable ($18 on weekdays, but no seafood & $25 on weekends, with seafood). For any OG Stockton people, these are the same owners as the old Chinese Grand Buffet Restaurant on Pacific & March Ln. and the food still tastes the same if not better. I would agree with others that there is "less" variety compared to other Buffet restaurants, however, they're higher quality. So in my opinion, the trade off is worth because the food is being constantly made & replenished, instead of it just sitting there for hours.. All of the food is really solid, one of my favorite places ever!! And the interior is very nice, fully remodeled with marble. The best interior of any buffet or Chinese restaurant in Stockton. The food was mid but what annoyed me was that my 2 year old daughter who is max 34 inches but since she broke her leg and was wearing a boot that made her 2-3 inches taller I had to pay the $10.49 price for 36"+. People are seriously such whiners and cry babies, they just need to stick to their McDonald's since they dont seen to realize they just opened up so some mistakes will eventually happen, whats important is their effort. every time i looked at any worker they were cleaning/serving food/ addressing concerns of people and my respect to them cause it is not easy handling that many people. It can be very stressful. My kid really enjoyed their food and i have never seen him eat like he was starving for days. Tried this place after they reopened in a new place. Expected a long line at the entrance. After 30 min we sat waiting for our turn to be seated to our tables. Its understandable that they just opened and things are still hectic with how things work. Drinks are served to you instead of getting up snd refiling it your self, so waiting on someone to serve your refill takes awhile. Some dishes are good and some are under season (mostly caters to western taste if you're not asian). The area is clean and organized being new. The process still needs refinement, people infront of us waiting almost lost their spot for being ushered to their table because ushers weren't checking the number in the receipt or calling out who is next, and people were just standing in front of them. Regardless if they were next to be served. The habachi is good has flavor, but the raw sashimi side was lacking in keeping up with the demand. They served crab legs and lobster Chinese style, which I was surprised. The weekend all day dinner menu wasn't cheap, 28.00 for adults and 25.00 for seniors. Drinks are included. The reason for the low score is because most of the food offered was bland. The variety of food was promising, but I couldn't find any food that tasted good. Another main gripe I have is they let the food trays run out before filling so at the end, there's a bunch of trays empty. They had enough people picking up dishes and refilling your drinks, but only one guy ordering and replacing the food trays at the buffet stations. The other issue was that they don't fill the high dollar items often, so they don't lose money on lobster and snow crab legs. The crab legs were good, not too salty, but the lobster was dry and hard to get out of the shell. Soft serve ice cream was really good. I really wanted to support this place knowing how good it used to be when it was on the concert of March and pacific but wow...it was so bad I sat their shocked at the quality. So much of it I took one bite and could not eat the rest of it. Knew the chow mein was bad as soon as I picked it up with the tongs and it slipped off like soup noodles. Don't know how anyone could screw up the taste of chow mein so bad, but like one bite and the taste was so awful. I loooove crawfish, but the sauce on the spicy crawfish was so bad I tried my best to douse it in lemon so I wouldn't have to taste it. I finished my plate, but it was hard to endure. They were also overcooked and dry. I dont mind frozen crawfish but that was something else. The Cajun one wasnt much better and was salty. The egg flower soup was basically egg as if it were a raw cracked egg into a bowl. It was also a one bite and not finish. The fried rice was bland. Panda express would never do me like that. The white rice was something, not good, but something. The boneless ribs were actually okay. The Kung pow chicken...decent. The snails were not that good. My boyfriend ate the clams from the Cajun boil and got sick. The fruit was probably the only good thing, but even then it was hard rind pieces and Logan from a can. The salt and pepper shrimp did not taste like they had any salt and pepper at all. The salt and pepper squid was good, but definitely tough. The pot stickers were like any gyoza and needed some vinegar sauce. Shrimp dumpling was good. But all the dumplings are obviously prepacked frozen ones. Some of the tong handles were sticky. The ice cream area had dirty bowls had filled with ice cream and stacked on other dirty bowls blocking people from using the machine. Saw someone leave the restroom without washing their hands (not a worker, but still gross!) Went for lunch, so less options but the options they did have weren't so great. It was overall just bad. Could tell none of the other Asians were verh happy. I would not recommend bringing your Asian family here, they will hate you. The way I'd be mad if someone brought me here. Sure its cheap, but I guess you get what you pay for. The upside is that the wait staff is very attentive and clear your plates quick and are quick to refill your drink.
