This is my favorite Asian restaurant in Las Cruces. They have a large variety of dishes to select from, plus Sushi and a Hibachi Grill, which will prepare a grilled entree with items you select. Decided to check out this place as it was right next to my hotel. I was very skeptical, being from Texas and living in NM, Chinese buffets can be iffy. I was so very pleasantly surprised. Everything I had was delicious. I base a good Chinese restaurant on 3 important things. Egg drop soup, Crab Rangoon, and sesame chicken. All three were super tasty here! Tried to get sushi takeout once where you're paying extra to get just sushi - servers at the sushi bar refused to give me any of the sushi they had just made. I don't know why this place got such bad reviews, it was everything I'd expect out of a good Chinese buffet. Tempted to give it 5 stars just compared to low expectations and prices. Classics like egg drop soup and chicken with broccoli were very good, and there was a lot of other variety, including American staples like chicken nuggets and pizza for picky kids. Sure, I wouldn't trust the raw seafood bar in the middle of the desert (wife said the oysters were bad), but the sushi was actually incredibly good. Wasn't authentic by any means, but they put a sweet imitation crab mix in everything, and had a decent variety, even masago and unagi on some of the rolls. I've been going to this place for years now, ever since it was the Empire Buffet on Telshor. I love this place and I'm not sure why other people seem to have so much to gripe about. I feel like when one goes to a Chinese buffet in the desert, one should have dubious expectations for seafood and authenticity anyway, although for anyone with food allergies, I admit this place has always been terrible about labeling things. However, I go here for its "American Chinese" food tastes, though ironically, they are also the only place in America I have ever been able to find this shrimp-cake batter stuff I had when I was in China (no idea what it's called though, because of the labeling issue). I love the low mein, as it's the thick noodles, not ramen, and the fact that I can eat sushi, spring rolls, green beans, and crab rangoon until I have a heart attack. I also like the weird cake-like desserts they have. This place can be a little pricey but it has lunch specials and because of the aforementioned foods, it's the only Chinese restaurant in Las Cruces that I like. The food has been fresh every time I go there...I know this, because I'll admit it sure doesn't look fresh, but I have been there when they've run low or didn't have something out that I wanted and they will sometimes whip it up for you in about 10 minutes, and it comes out looking like it could be old, but it's obviously very fresh. In its new location in the old Furr's, you can kind of see them making it in the back so that's further proof. If you're the kind of person who must equate organization to cleanliness and safety, don't go here. This place is expensive, and the food is mediocre. The staff is very rude! Also, they charge you a dollar to get a cup to go. It's 24 dollars for two people to dine in the evening, and then they want to charge a dollar to put your soda into a to go cup! I am never eating there again. Let me preface this by saying that I hate buffets; they're dirty and unkept. However, this place is immaculate! I've worked in food and their kitchen is actually spotless compared to any that I've worked with. Once I was ok with the sanitation standards, I went straight for the sushi selection. How do I start this review? Well I have taken my family here several times and the food is so-so, but my children like it. Because of them I will go to this place. Last weekend something happened that was the last straw. A cute thing happened at the restaurant. A freaking roach got on my wife's feet since she was wearing open sandals! I took my care giver and her daughter at 4 pm, for her daughters 16th birthday, she likes oysters. The cashier was very rude and because I was 64.75, in a wheelchair, I couldn't get a senior discount, her granddaughter 9 was asked for her ID. Never in my life have a ever seen such a disgraceful attitude! There were no oysters and the waitress couldn't speak English! I like rice pudding and before I sat down I looked to see if it was fresh....they were out out. I ate and went back for desert and the cook said no more!!!, very rudely! IT IS WHAT IT IS! The ambiance at the Grand Buffet is nice. The restaurant is bright, clean, comfortable and in good repair. This is a nice place for dining. The staff at the Grand Buffet does a good job clearing tables, etc. Overall, the food at the Grand Buffet is ok for a large buffet, but don't expect anything great. After all, this is an Oriental buffet. During my visits there was nothing offered here that was poor (EXCEPT FOR A VERY OILY EGG FOO YUNG WHICH I COULDN'T EAT) but, at the same time, there was nothing to get excited about. I found the egg rolls on one occasion hard and chewy with a noticeable lack of flavor. The sweet-n-sour sauce was flavorless. The chicken dishes (and there are a lot of chicken dishes as opposed to beef and pork) were simply average. The seafood was actually ok. But, I have been there four or five times and often I find nothing I really enjoy. Most of the food is simply passable. During my most recent visit in 2018 I found the food rather tepid....most of it did not seem as hot as it should be in the warming trays. If I were to use one word to sum up the food it would be "mediocre." Not the stuff of legend. What to expect if you go: A roomy, comfortable, clean place to dine with very pedestrian food. A lot of choices but with a noticeable lack of beef and pork. Restaurant rating = THREE-AND-A-QUARTER STARS....meaning just a tad above average for the full dining experience. "The biggest buffet in New Mexico"...? That's an overstatement, it's more like "The biggest disappointment in New Mexico!" First of all, I'm not being harsh here, I'm just a little ticked off and bitter about the experience I just had at the Grand Buffet. So let me begin by stating that after a long day of not eating anything, me and my family were craving some fresh sushi and some delicious Chinese food so I suggested the Empire Buffet, having ate at this establishment numerous times I knew we were gonna get our moneys worth. But hold on, Empire Buffet is no longer the Empire Buffet, it moved from its previous location which was by the Mesilla Valley mall to its new current location on 2340 E. Griggs. So long story short, as I usually do, I tend to go directly to the Mongolian grill to have fresh ingredients cooked before my eyes. Unfortunately, there was nobody manning the grill at the time, and when the cook finally came out, what do you know!?, a young hispanic male who had this look on his face like he didn't want to be there or if I was intruding on his personal time and he didn't even cook the vegetables all the way through! At the end of our meal, I wanted a glass of water with no ice so as I approached the waitress cleaning the tables and ask politely "May I have some water with no ice, please"...the waitress says nothing! absolutely nothing! she just points me in the direction of where the beverages are at!!! All I can think to myself was "Oh my God!" what happen to this place? what happened to the customer service and great food that I was so accustomed to at the Empire Buffet? When the owners decided to move to a bigger location, I think they lost something along the way...(their pride) and I think they just stop caring.
