Service was quick and the ambience is fun and festive with Mexican decorations but the food was a big disappointment. I was craving tortilla soup and it wasn't offered on the menu. I was surprised because the menu is huge...7 pages long. Another appetizer that wasn't on the menu was Esquites or elotes which authentic Mexican restaurants always have. I went with the vegetarian lunch combo #7. The bean tostada was bland and the guacamole didn't have any cilantro, onions or lime. It tasted like baby food...just mashed up avocado. The Chile Relleno was even more tasteless....the cheese wasn't melted inside and the sauce tasted like bottled Ragu marinara. No mexican spices or flavors whatsoever. I wanted a side of Pico De Gallo to add some flavor to make it less bland and said they don't have any. What? How can a Mexican restaurant not have pico? Even Taco bell or Chipotle does! I had a skinny margarita which was good but i asked for salt on the rim and it came with table salt on the rim. Omg! Any bartender should know not to ring the rim of a margarita with table salt and instead use Kosher salt or pink Himalayan salt. The free chips and salsa were the best part of the meal. I don't recommend coming here unless you don't mind everything coming from a can or premade and reheated from Gordon Food. Nothing is cooked fresh here. Plenty of parking, festive music, and great food makes this my go-to Mexican restaurant in the area. While the decor could use a facelift, the food is consistent and portions are great! What I love about this place is it's easy, simple food AND they have lunch specials. Why order a huge meal when you can order off the lunch menu. Plenty of options, mix and match, and combos to choose from. The staff is really nice and are knowledgeable about the menu. I ended up ordering off the lunch menu this time around - #1 that included a taco, enchilada and choice of beans or rice. I ordered a beef taco on soft corn and a chicken enchilada with rice - yum! And for $9.99 it's well worth it. Let's not forget about the chips and salsa.. AND this white ranch type dip that they bring to your table too. I don't know what's in that dip but it's soooo GOOOOD! The tacos were super gristly, the meat that was edible was over cooked; nothing on the tacos--a cup w white onions and cilantro on the side. Apparently they have a taco truck outside called the "Real Taco Express"! We were on a walk around the neighborhood when we saw the taco truck and I knew I wanted a snack after a long walk. We ordered the al pastor and steak taco and ate it after we walked home. Tacos weren't bad but they weren't anything special. I did enjoy the salsas a lot which enhanced the taste of the tacos but the tacos itself were just OK. Definitely would stop by again for a late night snack if I'm out for a long walk in the area. Like most places, I have been trying to update my reviews with the new world we are living in. Grand Azteca is one of them! Their food is consistently good and hits the spot for Mexican. However, I did lower my rating based on their procedures (or lack of) due to coronavirus. I think they could have done more. My latest visit during the health crisis of Rona was a beautiful summer night. Went to this location because they have a patio dining area. I noticed a lot of carry-out orders - people kept going in and coming out with food. Masks are required inside, and all staff were wearing masks. We asked to sit outside and there was about 5-6 tables with big umbrellas to help provide shade. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. I wasn't happy though when he brought our checks, he grabbed my cell phone on the table and used it as a paper weight for the 3 checks. Not cool in a Rona world or even a Rona free world. No paper menus and no QR codes on tables. They have kept their normal menus - not sure if they are wiping them down between uses but thought this was a little lazy/careless on their part. Food and value are great though - a combo deal is the way to go especially if you are looking for value. My friends ordered non-combo dinners and they had leftovers. Had been coming to this location for years with no issues pre-Covid. After Covid, have gone a few more times and the food has become underwhelming. Went in for lunch today. Ordered the lunch chicken fajitas. Service was good. Drinks were good. However, the food wasn't so good again. The chips and salsa and ranch were fine but the fajitas were so disappointing. They do not give you cheese for them. None. The fajita toppings were 90% lettuce, 5% sour cream, and 5% guacamole. Seriously, a tsp of sour cream and guacamole only. The chicken was so overcooked. This is my first tile ordering from Troy and to me surprise it is the exact same!! My go to order is the chori-steak and my boyfriend orders the chori-pollo. When you order it comes with your meat along with refried beans, rice, and three small flour tortillas. Everything is always SO GOOD. Seriously I crave Grand Azteca's chori-steak on a daily basis. I came here for a little happy hour event with some classmates, and I love the authentic vibe of the place. The big margaritas are a good size and fairly priced, and perfect for an afternoon drink. I had to be talked into coming here. I didn't have very fond memories of the other locations. This place is clean with friendly servers. Constantly asked if the table wanted refills. The appetizer platter is the best, nice variety. I've ordered it the past two visits. I am also a fan of their salsa and they also give the table a white dipping sauce that is tasty. Fresh basket of chips for the table to share. They also have some nice lunch specials, check out the pics of the menu online. So this location has brought me back into the Grand Azteca family. So, I work right across the street from Grand Azteca, and it's one of a few places that I have to choose from for my lunch. Normally, I prefer to eat in, but sometimes, I must eat out! I've been here a few times already, and I have formed a few thoughts. For starters, they have good lunch specials, and the prices are mostly under $10. I usually get the Huervos Rancheros, which is eggs, hot salsa, rice and refried beans. Now, this isn't the worst huervos rancheros that I have had, but its probably the blandest. the salsa isn't spicy at all. Just regular red sauce. No kick to it what so ever. there is supposed to be hash browns underneath it, but there is not. It's literally scrambled eggs, with red salsa on top. There should at least be a bed of hash browns, or some cheese on top, something. I will say, the rice and beans here are really good. They hit the spot every time regardless of what I get. I love them! Also, you get chips and dip when seated, which I love. The red salsa is okay, but the better salsa of the two. They also have a white sauce, but the white sauce is just okay. Chips are good, and I love how quick they come out. Also, I will say, I LOVE their beef tacos here. I don't know why, but they are so super tasty. I don't get them often, but they are a staple for me when dining. Service here is also quick and friendly, especially during the lunch rush, which happens here every day. Staff is nice, and I yet to have a service problem here ever. Also, the front sidewalk entryway could really use some repair. It is in very poor shape and literally falling apart in chunks. Not the best first impression when coming in here. But, on the upside, they do have patio seating, so that is cool as well. Grand Azteca V is a wonderful place to dine!! I'm a Los Angeles native born & raised and my husband grew up in the area and is a Michigander. We were in the area and decided to stop by after church. Once we sat down, we were served with chips with salsa and their special house made sauce. My husband got the lunch special and I got a potato taco with beans and pico de gallo. Everything was so delish and we left with happy stomachs! The service was phenomenal!! Our server was named Pancho and he was very welcoming, kind, fun and had good energy. The food and drinks were very good here, and reasonably priced for the most part. A few of us came here after a Meetup (disc golf, in 90-degree weather), hot and thirsty, in need of some water and some frozen margaritas. The service, however, was super slow. We did get water and soft drinks, but like ten minutes after we sat down. The frozen margarita, at $6.99-$8.99 (depending on the type you get - I had the Blue margarita, at around $7.99) was tasty and very alcoholic (you could definitely taste the tequila). I also had two chicken tacos at around $1.89 each, which was a good deal. Just as janelle p. said about her experience with the Grand Azteca in Waterford, I wasn't expecting much from this place based on Yelp reviews of the other location. The exterior, which back in my HS days was a Denny's, then some sort of middle eastern place is sort of bland and not very inviting; it could use some flowers, but it is smack dab in the middle of a parking lot. The interior however, is really pleasant. Spanish music in the background adds to its ambiance. The food to me was just okay. Unmemorable chips and salsa accompanied with ... ranch dressing. Really? Their menu is "grand". Since it was lunch we stuck with the lunch menu. I had ordinary tasting Lunch Fajitas and my mom had a Burrito Carmaron which she loved. The grilled shrimp inside were small, but flavorful. Both meals were $7.50 each, but if you knew my mom then you'd know she is never w/o a coupon! Hers, which was Buy one lunch/Get one for $3.50 came on the back of a Kroger receipt. (You can get the same coupon if you go to their website!) It was a $4.00 savings, which would have been the cost of a nice cold beer IF they had a liquor license. My husband and I ordered carryout from here on Sunday evening. I didn't see ground beef enchiladas on the menu but that's what my husband wanted and they were able to accommodate. I got the Enchiladas Supremas. It was a large portion size so I had enough to eat leftovers for lunch the next day. I was glad that they gave us a big bag of chips and salsa even with carryout. The chips were still warm and I do love to combine the salsa and the cream sauce that they have. So delicious! This is the second Grand Azteca location I've been to and I haven't been disappointed by them yet. I'm not sure if it's a regular thing but Friday night they had a three man Mariachi band rockin' it out here...totally fun and just super happy guys roaming the restaurant playing for each section. It's a fun date night if this is a regular occurrence. The food here isn't something you'll remember forever but it's solid. Great rice and beans, really good margaritas and they have three kinds of hot sauce on the tables which I love. The taco was a hard shell and nothing too exciting but it was good. The tamale was pork or chicken filled, covered in red sauce and it was pretty good too. My enchilada was gone in a matter of seconds....needless to say this place will take care of your Mexican fix. I almost forgot to mention that the chips and salsa also came with Ranch dressing, and not just normal ranch but a really sweet version which was a little odd but interesting. The last day in my 5 day Mexican binge. Ah I love Mexican. I chose Grand Azteca because it's consistent. Always. No matter what location. I have been going to Grand Azeteca's across Metro Detroit for years. I have tried so many menu items it's kind of comical. I do have my staples though, and this was one of them. This location is big. It's full of Mexican decorations and dare I call it Mexican Polka music. Lots of seats and a full bar. Many booth and tables too-personally I have never not had a booth. Your service is super fast. The beverages come in giant cups, which is refreshing (no pun intended) since you really won't need a refill with that much to drink. The chips and salsa are so good. Chips are hot and fresh, and they give you a mild salsa and a ranch sauce that I would put on everything. It's my favorite. If you go at lunch, many specials are only $4.99. Compared to everywhere else I have been this week, that deal blows the competitor out of the water. Their portions are large and you feel really full. You can get the dinners or ala cart, but no matter what it's good. I love their beans. I usually get the Enchiladas verdes, fajita burrito, or the Chilaquiles. Today it was Chilaquiles Rancheros all the way. They come out so fast-was maybe 5 minutes and boom-food time.If you saw my picture you know this dish is amazing. Chilaquiles for those who don't know, are tortillas cut into quarters, lightly fried and then soaked in a red or green (or both) sauce for maximum flavor. This isn't a soggy dish btw. They then top with a meat and a cheese with peppers. I got the chicken and that was smothered with cheese so melty and creamy it's sinful. there were also poblano FRESH pepper rings incorporated in there. Santo señor!! (Holy lord) SO GOOD! After recently having a blah Mexican meal on vacation, I was still in the mood for Mexican, so when we got home with nothing in the refrigerator, off we went to Azteca. We have also wanted to try this place since we moved here (since it's pretty close to home). And I have to say that we were very pleasantly surprised. Yes, we were surprised by the ranch dressing that came with the chips and salsa, but it wasn't really that bad. The menu is very extensive and it was hard deciding what to order, so I settled on something I have enjoyed in the past--tacos al pastor with a side of refried beans (just to test them out, you know). Hubby got the fish tacos with a side of rice and a cheese enchilada. Oh year, we also got the cheese dip. So, we got the cheese dip within about two minutes--already a big step above the last place, which took about 10 minutes to get. We had waters immediately, too. Our waiter was nice, but you could definitely tell he wasn't that comfortable with English. Which really isn't that big of a deal...except that my margarita wasn't good AT ALL but I honestly didn't want to try to explain that with the language barrier. It just had no margarita taste to it--and what taste there was was somehow off. I know I should have said something, but I just didn't. Other than that, the food was all really good.
