Gran Rodeo was a great choice for a girls lunch on a Sunday in Montgomeryville. We sat in a booth in the bar area, just outside of the main dining room. I will start off by saying, I am from California so my standards for Mexican are higher than most on the east coast. That said, Gran Rodeo showed up. Was it fancy? No. Was it the best Mexican food I've ever had? Also no. But what it was, was excellent. Solid food, great service, excellent quality of ingredients. The guacamole was fresh with the right balance of ingredients and a sizable portion. Since we were there for lunch, it was great to see that they actually had a lunch menu, a shortened with more specific options on the back of their already large and extensive menu. We ordered the lunch burrito bowl with chicken and steak and the lunch fajitas and both did not disappoint. A little smaller for the lunch portion, they both were still pretty substantial. The bowl was covered in the meat which was a pleasant surprise to what you normally see. On top of it all, the staff was lovely, attentive, and very helpful throughout our meal. I wanna start off by just saying thank you. If any one has ever gone to a restaurant super hungry but the place closes in like 30 mins and your worried if they will serve you or the food won't taste fresh. That is not this place they welcomed my group of 8 people with open arms and I absolutely loved my food. The server was super friendly and encouraged us to try a seasonal margarita which was ridiculous. I got a quesadilla which was great but someone next to me got a burrito and I tried it and his was better so get the burrito but that's just me.I can't wait to come back and try enchiladas. Gran Rodeo is good value for what it is. I got three hefty tacos for about $14, and I didn't even get to finish them all while I was there. The grilled chicken in the tacos was generously seasoned and mixed well with the corn and avocados. The corn tortilla didn't fall apart on me, and the rice was passable. Not crazy good, but nice to have. I got specialty chicken tacos when I visited, but my bf got the street tacos (chorizo, beef, and carnitas). Those are the closest thing to what I got, and equally as good imo. Bf especially liked the chorizo. The free tortilla chips came with salsa and this creamy sauce that I couldn't identify. The salsa was smooth, not too chunky and very flavorful. It was enough that I didn't feel compelled to get nachos. By the way, the happy hour nachos were $6, so that was a big deal. Quick update to say that we finally visited in person and were so pleased with our experience! The restaurant is large and well-decorated, clean and spacious. We came on a Sunday evening and had about a 15 min wait. They added us to their text notification system to let us know when our table was ready. In the meantime, we grabbed drinks at the bar. I'm a big Casamigos fan so I opted for the Clooney Margarita. I was very pleased to see no bottled margarita mix going into my glass! The jumbo was big enough to last throughout dinner. Once we were seated, we were served promptly with chips and salsa, as well as a white sour cream sauce (great mixed together). We split the trash can nachos in person (highly recommend) and the street tacos al pastor. The trash can nachos were honestly plenty of food for 2 and we still took some home. Overall, we could not stop saying that we couldn't believe we had never come in person. While delivery does the job, the in person dining experience was everything we'd hoped for. After a handful of visits to this location, I feel fairly confident my review is accurate. They're consistent so you know what to expect every time. The service is also very good. However, the food leaves a lot to be desired. The restaurant is named "Gran Rodeo Mexican Bar & Grill". My expectation after reading the glowing reviews here (although some of the menu items mentioned were suspect...more on that later) and hearing from several locals that "this place is great" and "they actually make REAL Mexican food". I don't know...I expected to be blown away. Now, I am fully aware that categorizing "Mexican" food as a singular type of cuisine is very silly. Mexican food can be so different from the North to Central Mexico to the rural areas, that it is truly unfair to try to lump them together. But, for the sake of this review, I'm referring to something that hasn't been bastardized to appeal to a broader audience. You sit, they bring tortilla chips with salsa, typically a watery and unseasoned salsa although on one occasion the salsa had some flavor and a little heat (win!!). The menu, it's large and upon first glance, it completely deflated my hopes of some "REAL" Mexican food. There are countless options for burritos, chimichangas, nachos, taco salads, the option to add sour cream to their "street tacos" and of course, the every depressing fajita. Nearly every dish is doused in their queso or a strange sauce so that you can't even taste what is underneath. As a lover of tamales, I was looking forward to having one until I saw it came out without the corn husk (not the end of the world) and covered in their "Ranchero Sauce". The food is so far removed from what you would find in Mexico....although the rice and beans are pretty good. Perhaps, I'm being a bit harsh. The fact that there are several people rating them five stars should tell me that I'm wrong. Maybe because I'm okay traveling twenty miles to Philadelphia for some really, really good Mexican food, doesn't mean the locals in this area are. Came here for dinner on a Saturday night and it was BUSY. Utilized call ahead seating, and we were seated almost immediately despite people waiting outside. Margarita was delicious, chips were yummy, and ACP was very good. Portions are large enough to take leftovers. My grandparents loved the chicken tortilla soup and jalapeño poppers. Whenever my friend and I meet up, we're always looking for a half way point between us. She was in the mood for Mexican food, and she found this restaurant for us to try. The parking lot is very congested/crowded, but there's a lot of additional parking towards the left of the building which is nice. The only downside is that you cannot make reservations ahead of time. However, they DO offer a call ahead service where you can put yourself on the waitlist around 30 minutes in advance (which is what my friend did), so we ended up getting seated right away. In terms of the seating..... the majority is booths - whether they are individual booths (one seat per person), or double booths (to fit four). There MAY be a few tables scattered around, or the bar, but majority of the seating is booths. This is a plus size individual's (my hand currently raised) worst nightmare. I tend to avoid booths for this reason, and really only like booths if the table is able to be pushed out. Unfortunately, the table was bolted to the wall, so it forced me to be super confined. Since the restaurant was crowded, it did not appear that there was any tables/chairs available, so I stuck with the booth. In addition, because we were seated at the smaller individual booths for one person each, the table was all around smaller, and I was forced to eat super close to my food (almost having no room without incringing upon my friend's side of the table across from me). Our waiter was Alejandro and he was super nice and accommodating. He always checked in on us to make sure that we were doing well and if we needed anything else. My friend asked for water towards the beginning of our meal and she unfortunately did not receive it until the end when she was boxing everything up, but we understand that it's because the restaurant was so crowded. In terms of the menu, there are a lot of different options to choose from, and we also received free chips and salsa for the table which I appreciated. I wished that the chips were just a little bit saltier, they didn't taste like they had much flavoring, but the salsa was pretty good. The prices on the menu are very decent, especially for the portion sizes! We were very impressed. My friend ordered the Esquites appetizer and the Taco Salad. She said everything was delicious! I ordered the Hawaiian quesadilla and it was so good and filling, I could only eat about half! It also came with some rice. My friend and I wanted to split dessert and originally asked for the Churro Cup. They were out of the Churro cup, but told us that we could order Churros. This leaves me to believe that the Churro Cups are pre-made and are just frozen and put in the oven (because otherwise, couldn't they just make the churro cups from the regular churros, just putting them within a cup mold? We were even able to get ice cream with our churros (since that's why we wanted the Churro cup), so I think that was the main reason why we couldn't order it. The Churros were good, but only came with 3 (which seems like an odd number to have, they should increase it to 4 and that way they're only $1 each). All in all, it was a good experience for the most part. In summary, the things that I would change in order to make it the best experience would be: 1.) Reservations online 2.) Went here on a Saturday afternoon to have lunch with the missus. The place was about half full and moderately busy. We sat at the bar and waited 14 mins until the bartender made an appearance. She gave us menus for food and drink and came back 10 mins later to get our drink order. That's it. Story is over. I wish I could review the food but she never came back to take our order. Apparently she likes chit chat with the other employees. Didn't help that the guy across the bar was so loud, so we left with that angry hungry feeling. You know what I mean. read more

Was craving some Mexican food with my girlfriend, but I have been to some of the local Mexican restaurants in the area and wanted to check out Gran Rodeo. It was a pretty Americanized Mexican restaurant, so I was expecting much. The chips and salsa were decent, but you could tell the chips were a little old and it was also served with an aioli-like dipping sauce which I thought was super strange. Then my girlfriend ordered a pick 2 combo with rice and beans, but specifically asked for black beans instead. However, she didn't get the black beans, but we didn't make a fuss about it. And then I went to order the street tacos which came with beans, guac and a side salad (or I thought) but the guac was super small and the salad never showed. The only reason I am giving this 4 stars is because of the quality of the meat. I ordered a carnitas, Al pastor, and steak taco for my three and they were all phenomenal! If all of the food was coming out as good as the meat, this spot would be highly recommended and a 5 star review! So when you go, definitely get some tacos with Al pastor, carnitas, or steak for sure, but I'm sure all of their other meat is fantastic as well read more

This is a 2 visit review. When Gran Rodeo was open for dine in service and the 2nd Friday of Lent 2020. Dine in: This is a traditional Mexican place and it is exactly the kind of Mexican place I am happy to be a repeat diner. Classic margaritas are really good! Rice beans and and enchiladas are always consistently good. Take a look at the photos to see what we enjoyed. I really enjoyed the simple queso blanco. Take away: During the 2nd Friday of Lent we got take away. The jalapeños poppers were really good! My Camarones al Chipotle was great fresh and just a good as left overs the next day. My wife cheese enchilada were on point as expected. Well will be back! I am looking forward to the day when restaurants will be open for dine in again! I met my fiancé here for lunch on a day when I was off of work but he did have work, so we were a little tight on time and not sure if lunch at Gran Rodeo would take a while or not. It did NOT end up taking long at all. Service was friendly and quick, without compromising the quality of our meals. My fiancé had a steak quesadilla and I had veggie/bean nachos. Visited for the first time while in town visiting family. Strangely enough I had been to this location when it was a Chilis. It's really nice inside, and they have a nice outdoor patio in the front. Overall I would probably rate this more of a 3.5 out of 5. The service was great, the food was pretty good, but the margarita I had was not my favorite. I chose the House Margarita on the rocks - and while it was good, it wasn't strong at all. For some this may be a good thing (or how they prefer) - which is totally fine. It just wasn't my taste. It was refreshing and only $5 on happy hour - so not a total loss My husband opted for the margarita flight - pictured below. They give you 6 flavors to choose from. He went with house, sangria, raspberry, and strawberry. Our favorite was the raspberry. The strawberry is super sweet - which he likes - but is not as much my taste. For dinner I had fajitas and oh my goodness were they amazing. It was a mixture of pork, chicken, steak, and chorizo. Absolutely delicious. 10 out of 10 for sure.
