Wow. Upon buying a new house, we wandered to Gramophone to have a new TV or two installed. 1. The team was amazing. 2. The solution built for us is beyond amazing. Everything works perfectly, and they integrated several things that normally aren't found at home anymore (yes, I still have a LaserDisc, yes, I know in the age of streaming. I still have two record players, and yes, I am keeping them!). First off, they asked a lot of questions. That was awesome. Second, they cleaned up any mess in the house. Ok so here is the deal.... $8,000 later I have a semi serious home security system installed. One hardwired camera with DVR. Recommended that I download a certain app so I can remotely view the camera. The app is $35 and actually works quite well. The problem is that my system is setup that it jumps IP address's every so often then they charge you a shit ton to come "reconfigure" your system. Quality of work is amazing, their is no comparison. The problem is that when you have a problem then all a sudden the repair/fix cost is beyond crazy..... After $8.000 for a single video camera I would think Simple problems like video IP conflict would be easily addressed and fixed for free but they are not. They cost $200-300 for a service call. From my first visit to their showroom, I was blown away with the size of the facility. They have individually niched rooms with the most sought after equipment an audiophile could want. My wife and I recently bought an older farmhouse and I visited them for some home automation needs, I quickly discovered they offer that and so much more. The staff is so friendly and they explain things so that we both can understand, the selection is unparalleled and aftercare service has been wonderful. The only real problem with Gramophone is I pass their showroom on my way home from work and I have been spending a bit too much time and money lately! I purchased a Denon Home Theater receiver and after unpacking and installing it was unable to get it to play through the speakers and RF headphones at the same time since Denon turns off the outputs for everything except the selected device. I contacted Denon tech support (don't bother) and after a long wait spoke with a customer support person who was not very well versed. Bottom line is that the design of the receiver prevents it from working with both headphones and speakers and therefor did not fit my needs. After carefully repacking it I was able to return it to Gramophone for a full refund. Great customer support! read more

I had the wonderful opportunity to spend the evening at Gramophone for their Elegance event. Their showroom floor is out of this world. I've been a home sound enthusiast for a long time but I have never seen quality like the products they were offering and demoing. I had the privilege to sit through the Totem presentation - a product demo unlike anything I've ever experienced. Before the presentation Luke got me up to speed on what was happening the industry. Afterwards he took me through several comparisons of other products that were being presented during the event. Luke has an ability to make the most technical subjects understandable and his no-pressure sales techniques are very appreciated in a world where getting the customer to buy before they have a chance to think is the standard. He does an excellent job of presenting value and allowing you to make your own decision. I would work with him again without a doubt. read more

I have visited Gramophone on 2 occasions. It is very obvious the staff works on a commission as they try to up-sale you on everything. I went in looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers around $500, and within 10 minutes the guy was showing me bookshelf speakers that were several thousand dollars. Also, I called on a couple of different occasions asking about the price of a receiver they had. I was quoted three different prices, each time higher than the last. When I asked about price matching Best Buy, the salesman balked and advised I just go buy it from Best Buy then. The salesmen seem to be very much about the bottom line and are not interested in business from individuals who do not wish to spend over a thousand dollars on each component of their audio system. read more

Now that I have the full amount of my refund credited to my credit card, I can write a review. Bottom line, unless you are a 50-60+ audiophile with thousands of dollars to spend in audio equipment, avoid this place! You would think that a place that depends on audiophile business to treat each customer with respect, however, from the moment I first entered this shop, I felt like I was intruding. I had to pry information from the sales associate I worked with (starts with J) and when asked about how many turntables he had in the store, he said two, and failed to mention the Timonium location which has a much larger storage facility. I left after the first visit disappointed, but thought I would give them another chance. I did my own research, via friends etc. about which products I wanted to invest in. I was looking for high quality intro level equipment, and J definitely did not give me any good ideas except for the peachtree DAC, which I was not interested in. So after further research, I decided I liked NAD's product line, and wanted to order the new 3020 D integrated amplifier, among other products, you think this would be a cinch for an audiophile store (with a good reputation?) to get this cutting edge NAD product in a few days. I was surprised when J told me it would take a week to get the products. The NAD C516BEE and PP 21 phono preamp did come within in a week, but I had to follow up with J and get him to tell me that they were in the Timonium shop and they needed to get delivered down to Columbia so I could come pick them up the next day. I decided to wait for the NAD 3020 D, so I could pair all products together, I waited one week, two weeks, three weeks, I started texting J to get an answer as to its location. I was told it was a customs issue, and the 3020 D was missing its invoice papers? I did not believe this story but gave J and gramophone the benefit of the doubt. Meanwhile, doing independent research I decided I wanted the Debut Carbon turntable, so I called them (no contact with J just another sales associate who was friendly and helpful). I was told they had the Project Debut Carbon in stock up in Timonium (this was Christmas Eve or close to it) so I drove up there and picked it up along with a record cleaner (the MKII), which I am happy with except for the Ortofon M2 Red cartridge which distorts, but that is another story and I am replacing the Red with the sumiko pearl cartridge. Apparently, J got credit for this purchase even though he did jack shit to assist with it. What a stupid system for giving sales people there commissions. The guy at the Timonium location was much friendly than J, and he should have gotten commission for my purchase. Nevertheless, I let J know that I purchased these products. No expression of thank you for the purchase nor any show of appreciation for my business was made. Fine, this sales guy sucks I thought to myself. Still the NAD 3020 was missing. Finally someone (the "buyer") was able to get the information from NAD that the 3020 was out of stock and further units would not be shipping until mid January ? What, they were lying to Gramophone? Why did it take 3+ weeks to get a straight answer only after pestering J with text messages? I texted J to cancel my order (at this point I did not want to talk on the phone anymore with this shop) and to refund my amount. This was easy enough (Finally). I ordered the NAD 3020 online and the next day had the unit in my apartment hooked up. Was that so hard? Why did a high end audio store not have enough of a relationship with NAD to get this information earlier? What is the point of a high end audio store nowadays anyways? I guess if you want to demo speakers such as GoldenEar that are unavailable to purchase online. But you would think that an audio store would have a good enough relationship to get a product shipped within a couple of days, not a whole month and then be told they are out of the product after the customer waits for a month! What kind of customer relationship is that? What kind of customer service is that, when I had to repeatedly follow up to get the truth about my shipment? What kind of customer service in which no appreciation for purchases are shown to the customer? If this place was a stock, I would heavily short it. You mess with the audiophile community you get a negative review. I hope this place learns from this experience and realizes that its customers are not there to necessarily buy home theaters, even though I spent plenty of money there that I could have MUCH easier and happily spent elsewhere. I recommend going through an online retailer than bothering with this place. read more

I've been buying all of my electronics from Gramophone exclusively for over 5 years. Before that, I would spend a lot of time visiting other stores such as Best Buy or the Big Screen Store for price comparison and ask questions. It was hit or miss getting someone knowledgeable enough to answer my questions to my satisfaction. However, I knew I came to the right place when I first met Lee at Gramophone and then shortly after that I met his associate Josh. They not only are extremely knowledgeable across the board but also not pushy in the least. I'll admit that a couple times I still walked through Best Buy to double check prices or what they're carrying or recommending, but I still ended up purchasing from Gramophone. For one thing, the price will be the same if, for example, you're buying a TV on sale because that sale is put on by Sony and the price will be uniform by all dealers. But more than that, as I said, the quality of their service, primarily in their knowledge base and the easy-going non-pushy style, I've enjoyed doing business with them. I've told numerous people about them, referring to them as "my consultants". And it's true, having spent probably over $7K there over the past five years, it's nice to be able to call Josh or Lee (or stop by or send an email) and get their recommendation and order over the phone or whatever is convenient to me. read more

I spoke with Advisors at both locations and decided I was going to be most satisfied working with Gramophone which I understand has 35 plus years of experience in audio and video. Both locations offer really nice showrooms where you can comfortably and patiently audition a vast selection of products with no sales pressure. Sales Advisors at both locations offered me a wealth of product knowledge and advice. John Z. is the Advisor I have been working with in the Columbia Store. We started with several sit down meetings at the store to discuss my home theater project so John could understand my preferences in audio and video. He showed me a variety of components that would fit into my budget with no attempt to "up-charge" to more expensive products. Many detailed discussions and demos took place with John before I made any purchases. He was very patient and accommodating as I probably took more time deciding what I wanted to put into my theater than most of his customers. My install went excellent; the professional crew was very accommodating with my onsite requests and respectful of my property. I continue to work with John on additions to my system. Lee Kirby-Smith is the Manager of the Columbia location. Very accessible and presents a personal approach to the customers in his store. Prior to this, we had not used their services. From the initial meeting with Josh, to the completed installation, everything was wonderful. The crew, overseen by Josh, were pleasant and professional and completed everything in a very timely manner. We visited the Columbia location today and received the worse (actually no) service at this location. It's a small store but we were in there for 10 minutes and no one offered any assistance. I approached the service desk with a couple of questions and the salesman (with the ponytail) blew right by me, began typing on his computer and gave me one word responses. He never once made eye contact with me and seemed annoyed. Mind you, the store was not busy. I haven't experienced that kind of treatment in a long time. Best thing that happened though. What I value the most about my experience is that Josh, my "go to guy" worked with me and came up with a solution that fit my needs and budget.
