I was invited to their annual vender picnic last Friday. Very nice affair…read more It was set up at a forest preserve in Wauconda. They had a pig roast and a prize raffle which was very nice. On thing that I can say is, there were probably 50 ABC employees at the picnic and I literally probably met 25 of them. All of them were super friendly, had great attitudes, and were extremely welcoming and inviting. I don't usually buy the things that ABC sells, but If I did, I would definitely go to them just for the simple fact that their people were so friendly and helpful. I love doing business with good people... I don't mind paying a little more for great service.

I have been buying ridge cap stapled cedar shakes from ABC for a couple of years, most recently on…read moreApril 15, 2016 and then on April 29, 2016. The ones from the 15th and previously were made by Silver River Contracting, Mission BC. The ones from the 29th were made by Harby Imports (604-462-7721) Canada. I noticed the different label on the product from the 29th and thought that the Harby product looked smaller and the bundle felt lighter. I commented on it to the fork truck operator who brought them out. He said that they were all the same. When I got to the job site where I still had the Silver River product, I compared the shakes and found that the Harby shakes were 1/2 inch shorter and were 5/8 inch narrower than the Silver River product. I went back to ABC, told them of the issue and asked them if they had any of the old label (Silver River) that I could exchange. The store manager acted as if I was nuts and that there was no difference, but he said that I could waste peoples time and look around. They only had one pallet and they were all the same smaller product by Harby Imports. I went back and opened up the bundle. The inside shakes were inferior with some having ragged or broken ends. Also, about 1/3 of the bundle had top spines that did not meet all the way along the top of the stapled ridge cap. These are inferior and smaller ridge cap shakes and not worth buying. The labor is the same to put them up but quality of your end product will suffer.

I was searching for live-edge, raw planks to build a table out of... I wasn't sure what I was…read moregetting into to build a dining room table, but I knew I wanted to do it. Room and Board had beautiful versions of what I wanted, but came at a steep 3K price, entry level... so I thought, lets make a labor of love and build our own. We found the obscure location, and I immediately loved it. WOOD! I found the owner, and we walked and talked through the stock for over an hour. He described the process in which the wood was collected, how it was cut, dried, and eventually came to the store. We got a history lesson on the whole thing. The service could not have been better.

If I could give no stars, I would. Horrible customer service. I had trees removed from a property…read morein Evanston and contacted Horigan to have one of the trees milled and dried for a table. The tree removal company wanted to deliver the logs at the end of the day. Bruce the co-owner told me something could be arranged, but then Erika told me the logs would have to be delivered by 3PM. Then there was the deposit. Initially, I was told I would pay $200 in their application. Then Erika sent me a text saying I needed to pay $300, then when I spoke on the phone with her she said I would need to pay half the full cost, which was $500. I had no problem paying half, but it felt shady that the price kept changing. When I brought up how the price changed, Erika told me it was because I changed my mind on having them create the entire table. I reminded her that I was only getting the table top done because she said she didn't have a carpenter that could create a wood base for the table so I would have to go with a heavy iron base they provide that I didn't want and pay $5000 for the privilege. She then told me quite rudely to take my business elsewhere. Mind you, the logs have been cut down and are sitting with tree guys. Not to mention, I'm in Hawaii on vacation with a child and wife who have tested positive for Covid. Erika did not care. She was rude and mean, didn't care one bit about my business or my predicament. Bottomline, Horigan doesn't have much competition in Northern Chicago so they treat customers like crap. I warn anyone considering them to take their business to Southern Chicago mills like Nicholson where they understand customer service and don't have anti-social personalities abusing customers.
