They used to be too notch cheap and plenty when I used to go here in high school. Over the years the chicken for thinner and thinner I feel like they cut a chicken thigh in half and pound it then batter and serve. When I get my chicken katsu it's thin as a sheet of paper. It used to be juicy and thick and the pieces looked like chicken! It's upsetting because these places up the price and we pay, but please keep the same standard of food. I been going to Grace's since I was little boy. Oldest known memory was when I was 5 years old (back in 1991). Heck, I remember when it still came in a plate with a box. This was the chicken katsu place to go. 3 big pieces with thick cuts, plenty chow fun on the bottom, rice, and 2 mac salad side. I moved to the big island in 97 yet visited O'ahu frequently. The first place I wanted to go eat was Grace's. Even after I moved back in 2010, Grace's was still the place to go for my katsu fix. I would say within the past 5-6 years that things started changing. The portions started getting smaller but the taste, vibe and price was still the same (it consistently remained at $10.75). By the post covid lockdown era, the price finally jumped. Of course that was expected as we all fell on hard times, but I started thinking twice about going here. Fast forward to about 2 weeks ago when I decided to eat at Grace's. Got my usual chicken katsu to go since the dining area is now a little smaller. Got my plate, went home, opened the tray and saw 2 small cuts of chicken, a much smaller portion of chow fun, smaller rice portion and the usual 2 side mac salad (but no kim chee). It wasn't the portion size that bothered me. It was the chicken itself. It's not the same at all. In fact, I would compare it to the chicken Katsu at L&L down the road at Wal-Mart: smashed and battered. Speaking about the batter, the katsu batter is different, too, and well... it sucks! It was more akin to fried chicken batter. All of this for $15+. I don't know if the original katsu recipe was a family secret lost to time or if this is the new owners way of cutting costs but this ain't it, chief. At this point, I would rather pay more to have one more piece of chicken using the original recipe. Don't raise the price AND change the katsu to whatever is being sold now. I ordered the mahimahi (small pieces of ok-flavored fried mahimahi), cheeseburger (delicious), and fried noodles (classic fried saimin that was delicious). This restaurant is a quick, cheap, and simple plate lunch place. Don't expect high quality food that you would get from a more expensive high end restaurant, but it does the job. Ugh. This was a "go to" place. This is the 2nd plate lunch I had that was just disappointing. I gave it another shot, but no way. This mix plate had chewy and tasteless pork, a very salty type of chicken which was rubbery and the curry was decent, but there was very little meat. The Mac salad was ok, and the trademark chow fun was almost non-existent and tasteless. Two stars, maybe it should be one. Pass on this place. read more

Grace's Inn is located after Keaumoku St on S Beretania. Parking lot is behind where several businesses share. This is my 1st visit to Grace's Inn. Breakfast and lunch can be ordered early in the morning at 9:00 am. I wasn't sure what I was going to get after reading Yelp reviews. Prices are affordable and there a large selection on menus. My order was mixed plate of beef stew, roast beef, and teri pork with rice, mac salad, slaw, kim chee and chow fun. Beef stew had big piece of meat that was tender and potato. Roast beef and Teri pork had some pieces that were soft. Kim chee was not at all hot. I didn't care for the mac salad, slaw, and chow fun. Next time, I will try the breakfast. read more

We are definitely eating out more during this COVID pandemic. On a positive note, it gives us a chance to try out new places, revisit old favorites, support local eateries, and Yelp of course. Grace's is definitely an old favorite. We don't come often (or at all) nowadays as our eating habits and palates have changed, but we always make it a point to stop by once (or twice) when family is visiting from the mainland to give them a taste of local style plate lunch. Their chicken katsu is always a popular choice, but family favorites are also their mahi, teri beef, and katsu curry. They also have daily specials. I always go for their shoyu chicken when it's available. Grace's continued appeal is more about the nostalgia and old school feelings you get from their familiar menu offering, homey cooking and unpretentious setting. read more

Whenever we are on the way home from town, it's a treat to stop by Grace's inn. Still the best chicken katsu around. Thick pieces of chicken thighs, crispy and soooo satisfying. First time here today. Review will be based off of a take out order. The lady that took the take out order over the phone was very nice and thorough. Ample parking right outside. Got there 20 minutes after order was placed and the take out order was already ready and waiting. Got the regular sized turkey with stuffing and gravy. It is a Saturday special item. Good portion size, I ate half for lunch and saved half for dinner. Combo of white and dark meats that were shredded then sliced from turkey. Ample gravy all over meat and stuffing. Stuffing reminded me of Stovetop, not a bad thing as I love Stovetop. Had good amount of bacon in it, so flavorful. Came with Asian coleslaw, macaroni salad, cabbage kim chee, cranberry jelly. Another drive inn with typical local plate lunch fixes. Little more side options than other Inns. Salad choices mac toss or asian slaw. Also homemade kimchee for certain plates if you ask or they ask, more on the sour kim chee side I'm fine with sour or fresh style like my poi ;) Great portions to price always have leftovers for us. Today's venture was the mix plate which if I remember had beef curry, teri beef, roaat beef.. All typical foods that can be found across all island. Beef was good, curry as well. Also Hot n Spicy Chicken plate. Little mix of sweet and spicy tossed boneless bites kinda like mochiko chicken. Little heavy on the sauce as as bottom of the plate yielded like 1/8 cup of sauce haha. Ever since the new management took over this place has gone down in service. I walked in and asked the "kid" behind the counter if the mushroom chicken the bone-in chicken thigh and he said, "Yes, it is". So I ordered that with mac salad and kim chee. I sat down at a table and opened my plate and saw all rice and no mac salad or kim Chee. I brought my plate back to the counter and told them my order was wrong. I ask told the kid who took my order that my mushroom chicken was not bone-in. He just ignored me. They did give me my Mac salad and kim chee AND removed one scoop of the three scoops of rice from my plate. NOTE: The kim chee is not like the original kim chee that Graces used to serve. It is the Korean style kim chee. Their service has gone down hill a lot. To me, the service is just as important as the food, if not more important. I highly doubt that I will be returning back to Grace's Inn Restaurant again. It's too bad that the new management doesn't take pride with their service and ruined an icon of an establishment. read more

Grace's is the original, and still the best for chicken katsu with those bonus noodles at the base. Their portion sizes remain generous, flavor is on point, and service is friendly, efficient, and reliable. I recently ordered some catering trays from them which were a huge hit at a potluck. I haven't been here in years. I used to come for the chicken katsu and the portions were huge. This time I ordered the mochiko chicken. The portions are a lot smaller than I remembered. The mochiko chicken was ok. It was somewhat dry on the inside. It came with two scoops of white rice, macaroni salad, and kim chee. The prices are still reasonable. The mini plates are $6-$7. The regular plates are $8-$9. I'm not sure if I came on a bad day, but it was so hot in here. The A/C was either off or broken. read more

I've been going to Grace's ever since it first started out as a lunch wagon across the street from UH campus back in the 70's. When the signs went up a few months ago saying that new management would be taking over, it made me sad. Grace's managed to keep the essence of that lunch wagon alive all these years, granted with some totally acceptable price increases, and smaller portions on the mac salad, but it was still well run and a great deal. Today, was my first experience with the new management and their changes, and I will now share what I experienced... with as little emotion as possible. 1. The installed fancy new electronic menu boards that are harder to read for old futs like me, but will make it easier for the new management to raise prices at a moment's notice. The main screen with the plate lunches was not functioning (pic attached). 2. Previously, if you said "no rice" you would get 4 salads. That has been reduced to 3 salads. 3. Kimchee used to be free, it is now considered an extra, and it costs $0.55. 4. Brown rice used to be free, now it costs an additional $0.60. 5. The plates I normally ordered are all about $2.00 more than they were, which would be easier to accept if they didn't also start charging for brown rice and kimchee, making the actual price increase for my usual plate almost $5.00 more. 6. My order was done incorrectly. I ordered no rice, and three salads, but I got rice with two salads. 7. The worker dropped then picked up the plastic bag off the floor, then still proceeded to put my two plates into it and hand it to me. Lucky for her, I live by the 5 second rule. :) 8. Although my order took the normal amount of time (albeit the wrong order), there were several unhappy faces in front of the counter from people who had obviously been waiting a long time for their orders. It wasn't that crowded. I think that was the first time I heard them apologizing to customers for the wait. 9. They are now closed on Wednesdays. Must have been their slow day. I guess there are always changes to be expected, and also some kinks that need to be worked out when there is new management. Many locals will be happy that they didn't close up like many other long standing restaurants. But the 9 observations above... it's a lot to take in. Hubby wanted to come here and eat. They brought back dine in as long as you show your vaccination card along with identification. I ordered what hubby got which was a mixed plate. I wasn't impressed with their food. It was way too salty and off putting. I have eaten here before and tried to like their food but it was meh. I had the orange chicken which was way too salty and soggy. Two scoops of rice were okay. The curry was actually good. Probably the only thing I liked on the plate. There were noodles on the bottom but didn't taste fresh. Just like from a can of soup. The thin slices of pork were okay. I drank raspberry iced tea and that was fine. It was also warm inside. No fan or air conditioning so it was uncomfortable to eat hot food in a warm place. Plenty of parking in front and behind the building. I don't really care for the food here. This place used to be my go to place for a large plate lunch. Just went there last week and ordered the chicken katsu and mini mochiko chicken. Before the chicken katsu plate had so much food and was so large the cover of the container would be bulging. The mini mochiko was the same. This time the chicken katsu had two small cutlets and the container was so empty the side salads and katsu sauce container could all fit in the container with space to spare. #28 review for 2019. Flavor: Grace's Inn still has excellent katsu! It came out hot and fresh - to the point I burned my tongue as I was really hungry and didn't want to wait for it to cool down. The breading was just the right amount and crispy. The chicken was also very tender and juicy. Ambiance: Not much to look at unless you are wanting an "old school" feel of a plate lunch establishment. It shares the same parking lot as the supermarket so there isn't really a view. It's a great place to people watch as customers come and go mostly for takeout. Value: For a mini, at $6.20, its par for the course. No real "deals" to speak of. The noodles do add to the mini as opposed to the usual macaroni salad I would get otherwise. Service: The ladies at the counter are friendly and are constantly filling orders. This is like an old school plate lunch place, one that has survived many years. I come here for the gravy fries- so simple yet so comforting. It's my comfort food. Plate lunches are good here too. I find it interesting that the plates all come with optional Kim Chee, in addition to a side you can already choose. It's not extra or anything, you can just have it. They offer lots of local plate lunch and breakfast options with all the standards meats and starches. The menu is simple; be sure to look for the specials. The restaurant portion is casual booths, you pick up and seat yourself. I feel most of their business is to-go as they pack everything nicely and have benches for waiting. Prices here are cheap and reasonable. The food is alright. It tastes good, portions are what you pay for; it's just very simple. Don't expect amazing flavors or soaring quality. We were so hungry after attending a graduation but when we got there questioned we're asked and the cashier was just rude talking with her back turned . So this is the only location left after the one in Waimalu closed down. So it's a far drive for me to eat here. I've grown up with this place and always loved their chicken katsu. My Dad and I went here for lunch to try it out after how many years, and I must say it's still very good food and lots of options, but the flavor just isn't there. The dining area is big and it was clean when we sat. Good place for those who need a quick plate lunch or those construction workers. Prices are super reasonable.
