They sell Blackball dessert drinks here but they've gone up slightly in price from what they used to be, so I decided to just grab a bottled drink that was on sale. I picked up something called Coconut Shake. Also came home with a lemon for 79 cents. Places like Superstore may have larger selection but their prices can be ridiculously high. I like these smaller markets that carry fresh foods for signficantly less than big box retailers. Service was good too. I accidentally left my keychain (with keys attached) at the cashier register. I was so happy and relieved when the lady from the cash register ran out and told me that I'd left my keys. So glad that my keys were noticed very quickly and that the lady was able to catch me before I ended up straying too far.

The inside is definitely bare bones and on the smaller side. However, it was full of customers. They're doing something right. They have Korean snacks and produce. Special mention to their dedicated kimchi and ready to eat food section, which have items like tteokbokki (starch roles in sauce) and kimbap. Oh so tasty. Another thing worth mentioning - they have sashimi grade fish, and as of the time of writing, it is much cheaper than T&T. My only real complaint is that the checkout area is set up rather poorly. I just saw a pile of people by the counters and assumed I was in the lineup. Turns out the lineup actually goes down the aisle that is closest to the wall. Pro tip. This place is definitely on my radar now. Will be back more often to empty my wallet. Recommended.

My favourites being Yuzu Meltykiss, sugared Yuzu peels and specialty Calbee. The Kitkat selection is small from my experience (1-3 varieties) and T&T still remains the leader for me in that category. You'd be wrong to think that nearby Izumiya is identical, as Darumaya sells things more suited to an individual instead of family sized. Products are also more unique and different, with the store's small footprint making it like a maze with lots to discover. It's a great place to go if you're looking for unique snacks to mail to friends elsewhere or to share locally. Chips go for around $2.99-$3.99 a bag though. I also appreciate the thoughtfulness of the small drinks fridge beside the checkout, paired with the non-refrigerated drinks on another shelf. My foodie friend and I remark at the price of the frozen, vacuum sealed wagyu and fresh sashimi every time we go. We're not chefs, but they are both out of our price range, most likely attributed to import charges for a small establishment. However, if you can afford quality, I'm sure it'll be there. The sashimi is very fresh and prepared in house though, but having lived here so long, there are other places to get quality sashimi for less.

I had tried Kimchi Onigiri earlier this year from Market Ribbon and I absolutely loved it. This one from Kim's Mart wasn't bad but personally, I prefer the one from Market Ribbon. The flavor from that one tastes better somehow. The Onigiri here are better when purchased directly from the Zenya food stall in International Village, but for a quick, affordable and cold bite to eat on a hot summer's day, 2 for $3.98 is pretty hard to beat!

Definitely came across items I've never seen before like a Takoyaki flavored Ramune. It was extremely discounted just fyi probably for good reason. They even had Japanese canned drinks stored hot like in Japan! The take away Japanese desserts also looked good. This place is right on Robson street so a great place to grab a snack, drink, pick me up while shopping. Prices seemed reasonable. One caveat is that it can get busy in here and the aisles are small so it felt a little crowded but that's sort of like Japan as well lol so not a big deal for me. Added to the ambience. All in all, it's a great location with its proximity to downtown Vancouver, Chinatown, the Stadium, and my favorite - Costco. Wishing it continued success.

We started on the left side, walking down their open refrigerated section, you see very clean, and packaged vegetables. Anything from Thai chili's, Thai basil, mini limes, coriander, green onions, bean sprouts, just to name a few, everything had their own packaging where you could see what your buying, and everything was, as I said, clean! Through the aisles we noticed stuff like shrimp paste, sections of Sriracha sauce, fish sauce, cane sugar, brown sugar, cans of bamboo, powdered soup broth for your favorite pho dishes, laksa sauces, a variety of different rice noodles, even labelled by the width of the noodle. This place is a specialty store, and one I wouldn't hesitate on sending anyone too, sure you have to actually get out of your car, or go down there with public transit, and open your eyes to a different part of society. We picked up : * aburi salmon 6pc ($15) --- Solid for the price. A good, average aburi that's comparable to what you'd get at a restaurant. * hamachi sashimi 4pc med-fatty ($16) --- Comparable in both price and freshness to a sit-down spot. Great cuts. * warabi mochi ($6.50) --- not sure how they transport these or if they were ever frozen, but it honestly didn't matter. The texture was soft and chewy, nearly on par with the fresh warabi mochi I've had in Japan. If you're a warabi mochi fan, I'd definitely recommend picking one up. * hamachi collar $9.50 --- Pleasantly surprised to find such a decent meaty portion for under $10. The marbling looked incredible when we first saw it. Felt like a mythic find, although I'm not one who goes out of my way to find fish collars. We baked and broiled it for a delicious dinner :) For some quality fish in those boxes, I'd pay the slight premium for Aburi market's sushi/sashimi options over the average grocery store any day.
