NO FLAVOR!!! Wonton soup-broth tasted very watered down. Pineapple honey chicken-chicken was nicely breaded and cooked but the sauce lacked in flavor of any kind. I had lunch here today, I have eaten here many times. I used to work next door. To be honest, I have tried many items on the menu but I am particular about what I like at Asian restaurants. I have my favorite places for just about every dish you could order. This place also delivers which I can't say anybody else in the area here does. At this place I only order Szechuan beef and I get it extra spicy. I always say, if it doesn't make my nose run on the first bite then it isn't hot enough. They always make it perfect! It's so good here. At first, I didn't like their egg rolls but I have to say I am a fan of those too now. I don't like their soup, they make all the usual ones but they have their own unique way of making each one and I guess I like what I am used to better. I do like their crab Rangoon which has me thinking, I haven't had that in a while.... The staff is super duper nice. The food comes out fast and they give you lots of little extras with your takeout. One of my favorite television shows on PBS is Globe Trekker. It's a great program and if you're not familiar, Globe Trekker is a show dedicated to exploring the world one country an episode. There are a variety of different hosts and the premise is to follow them through exotic and foreign lands, the host being your western tour guide and travel companion as you both venture off into places like San Borneo, Cartagena, Kuala Lumpur...etc. You get it I'm sure... Well, to my surprise, the Gourmet Garden Chinese restaurant in Brighton brought my Globe Trekker program to life. Upon my diner dining experience, I found myself somehow transformed into what appeared to be an episode in which they explored the over-crowed and polluted alley ways of Cambodia. Was it the broken booth I sat in with fabric spilt in half on the seat? The over-burnt low mien noodles I ordered that smelled of dirty cooking oil and wet cigarettes? The bathroom that was so dirty that the sink was brown, the stalls were completely covered in greasy fingerprints (some probably dating back to 2004). Hmmm maybe it was the dried blood in the bathroom too and what looked to be vomit remnants in the corner? It's fascinating that even though I have never traveled to a Cambodian alley in my life, the sights and smells of the Gourmet Garden in Brighton somehow transcended me there. Will I be back, no way- NO how. I will definitely let my passport on that expire. All I can say is that I am glad I didn't come back to my civilized western home that evening with any ebola symptons, itching monkey foot disease, or Japanese Encephalitis (a water-related disease spread by mosquitos). read more

FAST delivery and decent takeout with generous protein portions. Delivery was at my door in 10 minutes, and my chicken with broccoli was packed with chicken. I should have learned my lesson after my first experience with this spot. First time I ordered delivery and had the curry delight which has chicken shrimp and beef in a curry sauce. About a third of the meal was zucchini. It wasn't bad but I've never had so much zucchini in Chinese food Today I was lazy and figured I'd stop by and pick up some food to save on delivery. I ordered the chicken with cashew nuts. At least 50% of the meal is zucchini and there is not a cashew nut in sight, not even one. So, I'm new here, looked up reviews, decided to try this place. *shrug* I ordered a general tso's combo and asked for lo mein instead of fried rice. I was told it would be a dollar up charge and I said no problem. I also ordered moo shu pork with extra pancakes and extra hoisin and the combo came with an egg roll and soup. I got hot and sour. First, the chicken was great. It really looked and tasted like fresh chicken. The sauce was good, a bit thin, but yummy. I opened what I thought was the lo mein to find pasty white noodles. I tried them, they were disgusting. Bland and had the texture of styrofoam. So I moved on, took it as a learning experience in a new place..... I tried the egg roll, not crispy outside, mushy, bland inside. Completely tasteless, it was pretty gross. THEN, I dared to try some soup, it tasted like licking the inside of a tin can. So, I called to complain because I feel like I was taken. I spent almost $30 with the tip for dinner for two (my fiancé and I) and most of it is tasteless or inedible. I tel the woman who answers the phone about the lo mein incident and she offers to send me "another" order..... for $8. That's ok cupcake, you keep your tasteless garbage. I'll never order from here again..... especially since it's left me on the toilet with some less than solid...... WELL, I'll leave the rest of that sentence to your imagination. read more

Our first Christmas dinner as empty-nesters. I looked at reviews for several Chinese restaurants in the area and decided to give this one a try. All of those people that gave rave reviews must have eaten somewhere else! The fried rice was flavorless and beige. The egg roll was full of raw cabbage and mushy. Egg drop soup was awful. Absolutely the worst Chinese food that we have ever had. I ended up with major diarrhea. Will definitely Not go there again. Almond chicken was a joke. They apparently slice white meat real thin and dip in a batter and deep fry in some cheap oil. Nasty. My friend had stir fry almond chicken with vegetables, she said it was bad. As a vegetarian I get wary when ordering from Asian restaurants as I'm never really sure they understand that I don't want any meat at all from the appetizer soup to the egg roll. Here I was completely at ease as I knew the waitress understood and there are many veggie options on the menu. The decor is nice, no weird odors, and service was great. The Schezuan style tofu was nice and spicy and my partner loved the way his Schezuan beef was prepared--more authentic looking and appetizing than your typical Chinese-American chunks of meat in a thick gravy. They are open until 11pm on Fri/Sat which is amazing for Brighton (EVERYWHERE else closes at 10 if not 9pm) and deliver within 5 miles--love it! read more

I have always liked Gourmet Garden. I'd been going since I was in highschool (so I guess this review is a little overdue, since that was over a decade ago) and even then, when my friends and I would just sit around drinking tea and hardly ordering anything, they greeted us in very friendly ways, remembered our names and making sure we always had the best service. You cannot get to the bottom of your beverage: it will be refilled by a hawk-eyed employee as soon as they see it being drained. The food is very good, and large portions for the price. I have never had a dish that I had a complaint with, and depending on my mood I will order anything from the huge, filling steamed dumplings to the saucy and savory beef and broccoli. The place is usually very clean and simply decorated, there is also a small bar from which you can order a plethora of cocktails, each made with attention to detail. They are attentive to dietary needs, and unlike with most Asian restaurants you don't feel that there is a large language barrier between yourself and the person you're trying to order food from. Their employees are long-term and know what they're doing. Even moving to another state for a few years did not stop them from greeting me with enthusiasm by name when I returned. Pi's is good but they have nothing on the selection, prices, friendliness, and quality that Gourmet Garden provides. Very fresh chicken. Cooked perfectly. They brought food out to parking lot because daughter was sleeping in truck. We have tried most Chinese food places in Brighton and Novi area. This hands down is the best in area. Most places the chicken is dry and over cooked. This was cooked perfectly. The only thing is the Orange chicken and the General Chicken tastes exactly the same....good but the same. Possibly could have been a order error, but it was perfectly cooked. We've eaten here weekly for 8+ years and we still enjoy their food and very attentive service. Our standards (Chicken & Broccoli, and Moo Goo Gai Pan) are always tasty and satisfying. We treat ourselves to the Crab Rangoons and rely on the Egg Drop soup when either my spouse or I is not feeling well. We've never been disappointed! Before writing this, I read the strange review from Hope S. Wow! I certainly cannot relate to anything she said. What a sad, strange assessment. Did we really experience the same facility??? GG-Brighton may not be a 5-star restaurant, but I've never found it to be as Hope S. describes. Her comments totally befuddle me. Believe me, if it were even10% as bad as she claims, we would have never returned. We've had nothing but good things to say about the owner and her staff -- they are pleasant, professional, and very ready to please. They provide a very good meal at a reasonable price. The only reason we don't give them a 5-start review is that we feel they don't promote themselves enough. They have some tasty items that are not on the menu and are not always available. "Banana Chicken," "Sesame Balls," and some type of white bread are three of the items that come to mind. Being a long-time customer, I've learned that they will customize anything on the menu to accommodate the customer's preference. We travel on a regular basis to NYC and Chicago and enjoy their many good restaurants, but we always look forward to coming home to our weekly Gourmet Garden dinner. read more

I have been getting takeout from Gourmet Garden in Brighton fairly often over the past two years since I moved to this area, and the food has always been excellent. My husband and I have some special ordering details (how hot, extra sauce, etc.) and they always make our food just the way we requested. The people who work there are friendly and helpful. In fact, one of the women (she may be a manager or owner) recognizes my voice on the phone when I call to order and always seems genuinely happy to see me when I come in. I have not eaten in the restaurant so far, but it looks quite nice. I previously lived in Ann Arbor and went to the Gourmet Garden there (owned by the same family) a lot, so I was very happy to find there was also one in Brighton. This was my second time eating there food but first time getting carry out. I had eaten her about 5 years ago and it was good. Everyone I ask if they liked there food they say it's delicious so I was lazy and decided to get takeout. I got general tso chicken, hot and sour soup, vegetable spring roll and crab Rangoon. The soup and crab Rangoon were good, so was the spring roll except for the plum sauce kinda tasted like cough syrup.....yuck. The chicken was good except it wasn't as spicy and flavorful as I would have liked. It came with rice and broccoli which were good. Service was very nice and food came out fast and hot. This was the 3rd or 4th time we ordered carryout. Each time I ordered Chicken Lo Mein. The first few times it was great, this time it has a terrible tainted taste and it was loaded with oil. My husband ordered the Beef Lo Mein the flavor was ok but it also was loaded with oil, the beef was tiny strips of tough meat and we ended up throwing all the food out. We also ordered at one time the Sweet & Sour Chicken and their egg rolls were just fair. We won't take another chance at this restaurant and are not going back. read more
