Small group weight training is top notch, with tailored workouts for to meet your physical (and arguably mental) health needs. Trainers are unbelievably competent and supportive! I have significant health concerns, and I truly believe that this gym is part of the reason I stay well. Also, they have really cultivated community, so I have become friendly with so many of the people who train alongside with me. This gym is a gift to yourself. I hope you check it out soon!

I had done exercise programs on and off (mostly off) over the years. I knew how important exercise was but I hated it. It was either boring, or it wasn't convenient, or it was hard to stay motivated. Today, I have never felt stronger or more confident. In fact, to my huge surprise, when my job was causing serious stress, all I could think was, "I NEED a workout today." I have never said that in my life! The coaches at UA are top-notch professionals. They take their work seriously, celebrate with you, and are encouraging. I look forward to seeing the coaches -- they are energetic, friendly, supportive, and have taught me a tremendous amount. This contributes greatly to me staying motivated to keep coming back and improving. Getting a new program each month also helps stave off the typical boredom of a "regular" gym. Something else that was unexpected but great nonetheless -- there is a wide variety among UA's members (age, gender, physical shape, natural ability, etc.). I am inspired by and feel comfortable around my fellow UA-ers b/c they each face their own challenges. I highly recommend you give UA a shot. (The also have a location in Sterling, VA.)

The coaches at Fairfax Corner are some of the most knowledgeable and motivating trainers. They are always eager to help you improve your technique and answer any questions you may have. Shout out to DeAndre, Michelle, Bul, Denzel, Adam, Shannon and Chris! (I know there's coaches I have yet to meet but that's also because they do cardio classes and I'm not there yet. You'll definitely see me sometime soon though!) I think that's what makes Fairfax Corner stand out are the coaches and environment. The coaches take the time to explain the exercises in detail and make sure that you understand what muscles you are working and how to properly perform each movement. They push you to give it your all, but they do so in a way that is encouraging rather than intimidating. They remember our names, our goals, and our fitness levels, and are always willing to offer personalized advice and support. Overall, F45 classes are truly top-notch. If you're looking for a challenging and fun workout that will leave you feeling accomplished and energized, I highly recommend giving F45 Fairfax Corner a try.

My kids are in the youngest age group (under 7). They used to be taught by adult Sempais, and I could see them gaining skills, self control, respect, etc. But this location recently changed to allowing older kids to serve as Sempais and run the class. These kids don't have any experience with teaching children - they're still children themselves. The focus of classes has shifted from learning skills to just "conditioning" - running, sit-ups, push-ups, etc. And these child instructors just don't have the self-control to serve as instructors. At the end of most classes, the Sensei/Sempai ends with a fun game to conclude on a fun note. But recently, the child Sempai leading a dodgeball-type game got carried away and way too competitive and was throwing the ball full force into little kids' faces. I saw a 4 yr old get slammed in the face (by the Sempai) so hard she fell down. And the Sempai appeared to like it and continued to throw full full force at other 4, 5, and 6 year olds. That was the breaking point for me. The other Kaizen locations are good, and we'll stick to those ones.

Najim, the coach is great. He is very technical in his instructions but still very understanding that it takes time to learn the techniques. Plus he has a strong competitive record: Multiple Sabaki (full contact Enshin Competition) wins and multiple Muay Thai Titles. It should be noted that some of the techniques are modified compared to pure Muay Thai to more of a Dutch style of Muay Thai. The classes run one hour, with about 10 minutes of warm up and stretching, about 40 minutes of technique training, and then about 10 minutes of calisthenics at the end. The varieties of techniques vary class to class ranging from the very basics to sparring for the more experience students. Also available are: Children and Adult Karate - I don't know a ton about these but have seen Najim coaching the children's classes and the kids seem to be learning alot of good techniques and still having a ton of fun. Also Enshin Karate, being a combination of kickboxing and Judo, does teach many techniques that are very real world usable should the students need them in an actual self defense situation. Gracie Jiu Jitsu - These classes are taught by Toney Waldecker, a blackbelt under Relson Gracie, son of Helio Gracie - the inventor of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I don't know a lot about these classes either but Toney seems to be a very good trainer and Relson visits the dojo a few times a year it seems.

Empower Fitness has everything I wasn't getting at Oak Marr: small, uncrowded classes (that you reserve a spot for); classes on holidays (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day...); workout routines that change regularly and often; and, most importantly, attentive instructors. They teach the proper form for each exercise and keep an eye on you during class, giving suggestions and encouragement. All fitness levels are welcome, and the instructors provide modifications to accommodate ability and injuries. I've been going 12x/month for a year (4-5x/week during the summer) and I am still injury-free and looking forward to every class.

For CrossFit specifically, the energy is great, and you get to learn how to do the movements correctly, but at times (mainly when I first started), I've felt a bit judged and lost. It really depends on the instructor and the time you go. Hyrox, on the other hand, is great since you're usually in groups, which makes it feel more structured and supportive. All of the peak instructors I've had have been really friendly and motivating! The owner is also very welcoming and encourages bringing friends, offering a free trial class so you can see if it's a good fit. *Workouts: Classes usually have about 10-25 people, and you can go at your own pace. I typically go 4-6 times a week, switching up which classes I take. When I first started, the workouts felt tough, but over time, they've become much more manageable (results, yay!). Personally, I'm one of the most unmotivated people when working out alone, and they do a great job of encouraging you to show up at least once a week. The classes are a mix of bodyweight exercises, weights, and cardio, so there's always variety. *Pricing: I pay $159 a month for unlimited classes (~$6.65 a class if you go 6 days a week), which also includes 24/7 access and amenities like massage chairs and saunas. When I first started, I was on the $99 plan for two classes a week, which is a good option if you're not ready to commit fully. *Overall Thoughts: Halo Fitness is a great option for anyone looking for that little extra push. If you're new to CrossFit and have the time, I'd HIGHLY recommend going a bit early and asking questions so you don't injure yourself and don't feel so lost walking around, wondering what you need for the workout and which stations aren't taken.

I'm sorry but watching a tv screen and rotating through stations just doesn't do it for me. I may as well workout at home! I timed that the actual minutes I was working out for was 33! F35 might be okay if you are new to working out and need some kind of direction. The weights are decent but again I could do this at home. But avoid if you are an experienced athlete and want an actually challenging workout! The instructors didn't seem very knowledgeable either. Having done gymnastics at an elite level, I know the qualities of good athletic trainers. The instructors at F35 would just cheer and point to stations that the tv was showing. Kind of ridiculous! I think I'll take my money elsewhere! Other cons include: -absurd cost -no towels -claustrophobic studio -parking in tight garage

I am usually a big fan of group fitness so it's painful to me to give this such a bad review…read more However it is a major waste of money and I want to advise others to stay away for the following reasons: -Time: you go in thinking you are going to get a full 45 minute workout. However, it should be called F35 bc after the instructor shows what each station is, there is only 35 minutes left and this includes warm up time and time between stations -instructions: basically a tv shows what each station is. And the instructor really only goes around cheering for people. One instructor looked so young and didn't really seem to be that knowledgeable on fitness. -Price: a drop in class is $35. Given that the workout is only 35 minutes after the demo, that's a $1 a minute. -workout: the sets were really short and simple. You may as well just do your own workouts bc you are looking at a tv for instruction on f45 anyways -other: the space is really small and not very nice. They don't even give towels which is absurd for $35 a class. And also they won't stop bothering you to join after you try a class. F45 Is a fad. If you are interested in group fitness try a cross fit studio or literally any other gym. They will rob you of your money here and you won't get that great of a workout.
