Fried squid fried oysters fried chicken

Great service and good food in this hotel sushi restaurant. Stopped by right be a Knicks game and it's only 2 blocks away and plenty of space inside. Fast friendly service. Had fired oysters which were a bit too breaded, fried squid which was good, fried chicken was ok but cut in chunks and not typically as tender and juicy as others we have had. The sushi platter was great, miso soup was good and also had the soba noodles which were good as well. This is a great choice if in the neighborhood.

Absolutely incredible food here! The ambience is gorgeous too. Very chic and service was impeccable. My coworkers and I came here for lunch. It was a little pricey but for the portion and quality we were well-pleased. I ordered the udon combination which came with tempura and a little chirashi style bowl. The fish was super fresh and great quality. The tempura was crisp and juicy; perfect coating on it. We just wished there was dipping sauce for them, but we were told that they were supposed to go in the soup. We ate them with a little soy sauce instead. The soup was also delightful-- super flavorful and warming on a chilly winter day. I absolutely cannot wait to return here on my next business trip to the city.

Hidden spot near 34 and Penn that serves sushi and tempura. I definitely enjoyed my food however would not say this is the best sushi around. I ordered the chef choice and it came with miso soup. Unfortunately, the temperature of the soup was scalding, maybe a new batch? It is not ideal for drinking. The sushi is very fresh but the rice is just to grainy and falls off easily leaving a stale chewy taste. May have to come back and try other dishes! I enjoyed the service and definitely reasonable pricing but wouldn't say its the best!

Do you like hole-in-the-wall sushi joints? Then don't tell anyone you read this review and just show up. I only noticed Gosuke because I happened to spend a lot of time in the area for a while and saw the little sign. This is the kind of affordably, good-quality sushi restaurant that Manhattan south of Central Park is sorely lacking. The menu is a mixture of tried-and-true staples and creative inventions. Start with the tasty Saba Tatsuta (fried mackerel bites) to get your fish palate working. The Salmon Mori (in ngiri form) is an ode to the fish that Scandinavians introduced to Japan al those years ago. The Tuna Crispy Rice--while not my favorite--was still crunchy and delectable. We had a roll with green soy paper whose name I forget, but it was bursting with fresh fish. And the Salmon Avocado Roll with rice crunch was generously portioned and hit the spot. We also got the Cream Puff Tempura for something sweet and did not regret the mixture of fried flour and Japanese "not too sweet" cream. Gosuke isn't here to be featured on Netflix, but it might just remind you of your favorite neighborhood spots in Shibuya.

We were in the mood for sushi after the gym and found this place on Yelp. We got the sashimi matsu and the chef special tempura to share. The service was a bit slow - we sat by the sushi counter but could only place orders with the server. The quality of the sashimi was good. However, we were slightly surprised by the number of pieces presented for the set. The menu stated around 30 pieces, but we only counted 25. When we mentioned this to the server, she checked with the sushi chef, and we got a few more pieces. While it worked out in the end, we felt like we were begging for additional pieces and had to show them the picture I took before eating. I wish this incident had never happened so that I would want to return for the same dish. The tempura was very crunchy, and it reminded me of the quality I had in Tokyo. I highly recommend the tempura.

Nice little hidden spot. I heard about their delicious chicken karaage, I had to go try. It's true! Super delish. Had some great spicy tuna sushi as well. Very fresh. Service was nice enough.

Came here recently for dinner. Got the chef's choice sushi dinner. I asked for specifically for no salmon or uni as those aren't my favorite. The sushi was fresh but on my third piece, I had a mouth and throat full of bones. Thankfully I was okay but I was honestly uncomfortable eating any more. I called the waiter over and he didn't seem concerned at all. Didn't care that it was bad brought me my check with the full meal on it. I was with a friend that was still eating so it was very awkward. She quickly finished and we left. Will not be coming back.

I enjoyed my experience here. It's odd but this place reminds me of some of my favorite old Japanese restaurants that I used to frequent in Manhattan before they inevitably closed over the years. When I say "used to frequent" I'm talking about those mid-range places that aren't cheap hole in the walls or little ramen/izakaya type joints or high-end expensive places with uber expensive sushi or omakases. This place was tucked inside a hotel and I grabbed a seat at the sushi bar. The sushi I had (tekka and negitoro rolls) were are very good. The flavor was spot on and the fish tasted fresh. The latter was enjoyable enough that I ordered a second helping of it. I had a basic salad as my appetizer and it was pretty straightforward. I also enjoyed an order of the tonkatsu. It was fine, there was nothing particularly memorable about it but it still tasted fairly good. Above average in all respects in terms of the meat quality etc. The service here was fine, it was a little slow at first but it picked up later on. The guys at the sushi bar were friendly and efficient. I just like the fact there is such a place that's close by to Madison Square Garden. It was a good option to hit up before the concert I went to and I'd do it again the next time I'm here for a show or game.

what a hidden gem! Astrid the server is friendly n cute too. Love the happy hour! $6 vines n $5 bites. Perfect place to grab a drink n snack after a stressful day. I'll def come back. Cheap n cheerful happy hour!

Omakase 1: Kinpira gobo (braised burdock dusted with shichimi pepper) and another braised starch (potato?) with ginger and soy sauce. Tasty.

This is a good little sushi/sashimi spot located in the Henn Na Hotel. I was here with a bunch of others last night as part of a meetup. The woman running it highly recommended this place as an authentic sushi and sashimi place and I can see very easily why she did. For the price, this was one of the best Omakase experiences I have had in the city. The service was pleasant; accommodating food allergies from the variety of people and giving good suggestions. Outside of the omakase I ordered (as well as two others,) other people shared a variety of dishes and overall everyone liked what they ordered. As I had a course menu, only two of the appetizers are being listed as highlights: Saba tatsua-age/さば 竜田揚げ: Deep fried mackerel. I ordered this as an appetizer and it was part of a special menu. This was very tasting being a light fry which perfectly accentuated the fish quality. Bakudan/ばくだん丼: Assorted sashimi along with natto/納豆 or fermented soy bean. This is a rare type of donburi not commonly found in the US with the closest thing being the bara chirashi you find in a few other places. Couldn't have much as I'm allergic to octopus but the person loved it as did everyone else. I believe it was $20 which is reasonable for the quality of the fish. I decided to go with the sashimi omakase which is unique as usually I only see it sushi style. It came out to $90 for a whole lot of fish though there are bunch of cheaper sashimi/sushi options including one for I believe 35 or 40 which included just the sashimi (though unsure if it would be the exact selection I got as I have a squid/octopus/ clam allergy) which would be also very filling. Course 1: Vegetables. Kinpira gobo/braised burdock root/きんぴらごぼう dusted with shichimi pepper and another braised starch with ginger and soy sauce. The former was fantastic with a nice twist from the pepper. I'm unsure what the latter starch was (perhaps potato) but it was also comforting and tasty. Course 2: Chawanmushi /茶碗蒸し or steamed savory egg custard with mushroom and shrimp. This was a tasty variant though I have had better in other places. Perfectly reasonable but I prefer a more fish flavored variant. Still good with delicate mushrooms and bouncy shrimp. Course 3: Assorted sashimi. For the sushi folks, it came out a few at a time while for me, it came out as one big plate which was surprising. There were a whole lot of pieces. Along with some gari/ginger, wasabi, and crunchy tasty kelp/wakame, the dish came with: Kanpachi/間八 (greater amberjack:) They were all good but this was outstanding. Fantastic texture and flavor. Chutoro/中とろ (medium fatty tuna:) Tasty but I have better but perfectly reasonable for the price. Maguro/鮪 (regular tuna:) This was alright. I have had better but there some tuna specialists in the city. Sake /鮭 (salmon:) Good salmon. Nicely fresh with a good texture. Hirame / 平目 (fluke:) Good fluke as well. Good texture. Course 4: Miso soup (well normally.) This was the only slip-up of the kitchen. The others got the same but with a large shrimp head or alternatively a fried shrimp but they misread the allergy. The soup was good and the little bit of shrimp I tried was very good. Course 5: Ice cream served with sweet potato, chestnut, and red bean. This was different than other places and perfectly fine. In terms of ice cream it was good with the syrup being a highlight. If ice cream is the last course, I prefer a monaka like in other spots but it was good. Other people's sushi omakase included a fantastic looking scallop, a big piece of anago/saltwater eel, uni, and a tuna hand roll. Said people also loved their dishes as well. The only other dish to mention was grilled squid which they liked, gyoza (which I didn't try,) and tatsua-age/fried chicken which was good. Overall the food was outstanding with particularly good sashimi. The price was high but for the quality, I haven't found better omakase. i would go back for their sashimi platter. Upper 4 for the sashimi quality in particular.

Without a doubt the best meal I have had in New York of any kind. I probably walked by this spot two dozen times and looked at the sign and kept moving; I am ashamed and will pay my penance by going back again. Quite a small place, neat interior and the main stage is the MasterChef behind the bar. Go for the Omasake dinner and take a seat and let him do his magic. I'm not going to bore you with all kinds of descriptions and just let the pictures try and convey what my palette was tasting. Quite frankly get your butt into the seat at the bar pay attention to how he's preparing your one bite sushi dinner that just never seems to end and enjoy it. I thought I had sea urchin previously and I was all wrong. This. This was sea urchin the way it was supposed to be plated and served. It's quite an epic journey and not sure whether I can really have sushi without flashing back to this meal and experience. And now the chase begins to find something better than this but until then this is my North Star meal.

It's not especially big, so you may have a bit of a wait if you frequent right at lunch or in the evening but whatever amount of time you have to wait it will be well worth it. Service is top tier but you come for the food. They have a varied menu with a lot of options so if you're bringing a buddy that isn't up for Katsu, they'll have plenty to choose from. The Katsu is the star and I think what sets this place apart is that they offer Berkshire pork katsu as an option. Arguably some of the best pork, it's great to have the option if you're looking to heighten the experience. I love their pork katsu and go nuts over the chicken katsu curry. It's super crispy, slightly greasy but never off-putting. And it's served with the most delicate and delicious cabbage slaw. I could eat a mountain of this it's so good. Highly recommended.

Katsu-Hama is about two doors to the Left of Phil's, and has minimal, very discreet signage. I got some tonkatsu...I forget the exact type, but it was essentially the most fatty of the tonkatsu offered. It came with cabbage (with a sesame ginger type dressing), daikon radish (with some type of sauce on top), and the standard sauce for the tonkatsu, along with some crushed sesame seed and hot mustard. I'd have to say...the tonkatsu was quite good....not quite as sublime as my favorite tonkatsu place in Tokyo...but still, very, very good. The dish also came with a bowl of miso soup (good, and not overly salty) and a bowl of white rice, which I considered the most disappointing part of the meal. The rice seemed a bit dried out...not moist.... All in all, an excellent meal. I'd definitely come back.

I would budget to spend around $100 a person here after tip and tax, if you ignore the prices on the menu and try a variety of things. The tuna from the bone is the most famous dish here, but I was not able to get it as they sell out very fast. But I tried the sashimi and it was high quality -- just that it was not enough food for me. But that makes it more in line with portions back in Japan. They have an extensive sake list and they also have the casual cocktail options like lemon drops you would find in Tokyo. The atmosphere really transports you straight into Japan if that is something you are looking for. Expect to pay a premium for small-ish portions, but at the same time very well-made and authentic food.
