I have been visiting Houston for the past 3 years and oddly enough have never tried Mexican food. At the suggestion of a friend's cousin who lives in Houston (and is fully fluent in Spanish), a group of 4 decided to try Gordita's Mexico. The restaurant is located in a strip mall filled with other Mexican businesses so Gordita's looked very authentic. Walking into Gordita's you see a no-nonsense decorated restaurant with booths along the perimeter, some individual tables, and the kitchen directly in the center. Note that the restaurant can be slightly intimidating for non-native Spanish speakers as the restaurant doesn't seem to be frequented by many "Gringos", let alone my party that consisted of 4 Asians. Nonetheless, the waitress was fluent in English and helpful in explaining to us the various dishes. We ordered empanadas and shredded beef tacos for the appetizer, and for my entree I ordered the "El Presidente". - Ground beef empanadas were very large and tasty with warm gooey cojita cheese inside, but just a tad oily as the empanadas are fried vs. being baked. - The shredded beef tacos were mind blowing; super fresh lettuce and tomato, cojita cheese (I have to start buying this stuff!), and amazingly tender shredded beef. - The "El Presidente" consisted of one gordita, one sope, one taco, and a side salad. The great part of this dish is that you can order each item with an individual type of meat! The list of meats available was extensive ranging from beef, chicken, pork and even shrimp. For the gordita I chose the fried pork skin and it was full of yummy pieces of fatty pork, crumbled cojita and veggies (shredded lettuce & diced tomato). The corn gordita pocket was amazingly fresh and really soaked up the nicely rendered pork fat! For the sope (which I have never tried before) I chose the shredded beef. The sope was a tasty tower of well seasoned shredded beef, veggies, and cojita cheese on top a crunchy foundation of a corn patty. For the taco it was again filled with the same yummy contents as above but this time with moist fresh chicken. Boy the food is filling and will put you in a sleepy state afterwards but for fresh, super flavorful, and all at a amazing price point..............go try this place! read more

After working in the area for the last 2 years, I finally made it into this restaurant. For some reason I thought it was counter service, but it's actually table service with waitresses. As other yelpers indicate, it is typically frequented by hispanic people and you will rarely see any other race. If that doesn't bother you, or you speak Spanish, then come on in. Look for the daily lunch special on the chalkboard to the left of the register, if you're looking to save a little money. It's only $5.99. I ordered the torta cubana ($6.50) and a shredded beef sope ($2.75) Chips and salsa - average tasting. The green one has a bit more refreshing taste and served cool, while the red was served warm, and was kinda bland and boring for me. Torta cubana - lots of flavor, this was the better dish, but I removed the sausage (hot dogs) cause I don't like them. Nothing fabulous here. Shredded beef sope - this was alright but lacked a lot of flavor. They load the sope with plenty of meat though. Not sure I will be coming back anytime soon, but it's certainly an option in the area. They also have limited desserts (think flan, churros, tres leches), liquados and aguas frescas. read more

Great Vegan options. I am not sure if everything listed on their vegan menu is actually dairy free, so I stick with the Vegan Taco and Vegan Burrito. Tip: Ask for more red salsa, as they only give 2 to go, no matter how much you order. read more

The food is actually pretty good. Very messy. But I think it's better that way. There are some things that threw me off. The flour tortillas were a bit inconsistent. Soft and fluffy one end, a bit hard on another. And they broke easily while eating. The restaurant isn't the cleanest of places. But hole in the wall I guess can be good for some. Service is ok. Some don't speak much english. Other than that, the experience to me was a 3.5. unfortunately I can't place 3.5 on my app. read more

I've been going there for every 2-3 weeks and would always order from the "vegan" menu. I ordered a black bean quesadilla which I believed was vegan and was curious and asked the waitress what type of cheese it was, simply because the cheese looked and tasted like real mozzarella cheese. Once she came back, she told it was just regular cheese, not vegan cheese. They misinterpreted what vegan actually is and left the food untouched. It's sad to say because the food tasted great, but too bad that they had to lie about being vegan. read more

So, there's a Mexican food place further down the street that I really wanted to hit the other night, but we all know how horrendous Houston traffic is so I found these guys about a block away. Guess it was a good decision because their food is on par with what I expect a Mexican food eatery to taste like. Add to the fact that they have this older-type "music box" that actually still gives you FOUR songs for a dollar? Winning!! Granted, you might not have any idea who any of the bands are unless you've heard some serious beer-drinking-Mexican music at least 20 times in your lifetime. haha! but I digress, the enchiladas coloradas were great with the diced beef fajita meat along with the fresh-tasting Mexican rice that came with it. If you haven't a clue what I just meant in that last statement, don't worry - you can thank me after you've tried it. Their "taquitos" aka street tacos are okay, but they used the wrong kind of meat or just didn't cut their slices the correct way because my wife thought they were a tad chewy. All in all, I thought it was a good find for the price, but I'll have to come back on the weekend to try their menudo, then we'll know how "authentic" of a Mexican place their are...or aren't! lol read more

Okay so I was looking for a Tex-Mex restaurant and stumbled on this place. This is NOT Tex-Mex. They serve authentic Mexican food. The service was okay. My friends and I came late at night, so there were only a few other people in the restaurant. That being said, our waitress barely checked on us at all. The waitresses don't speak much English, which is always a good sign for me because I know the food will be true to form. Plus I get to practice my Spanish. But I expected to see her more often than I did. The chips and salsa was decent. The green salsa is much better than the red. I ordered the Bistec Mexicano. The meat was very flavorful and tender! It also came with excellent, warm corn tortillas. The horchata is also very good here. I had to get two glasses of it! There are no margaritas or alcoholic drinks except beer, so if you want margaritas or straight up Tequila, you'll have to go elsewhere. The prices are very affordable as well. My meal was $9 and the horchata was $2.25 per cup. I spent about $15 after tax. Overall the service was only average, but the food and prices are what are making me give a 4 star review. I love the CALDO here! Especially after a long day at work...this place is perfect! It's open until 0100 everyday! Not many Yelp reviews, but the aggregate score is four and a half stars (one review, as I've come to learn, was written by a fellow who'd lived in Houston for three years, yet had never tried Mexican food), we were close by, and we were in the mood. I ordered two tacos, one carnitas and one barbacoa, an I Can't Believe This is a Sope and a You Call This a Gordita? The carnitas were cut into cubes, not shredded, and looked disconcertingly like cat food. I held my nose and prayed for the best. Not horrible! For years this place has been one my top places to eat in Houston, with the large Mexican community living in Houston is easy to find a Mexican restaurant around the block. This place goes straight to the basics serving traditional dishes from a variety of parts of Mexico. I always get the polla a la poblana which its says its a dish native of Oaxaca. My mother and I stopped by the restaurant for some quick Mexican food. Once we sat down and tasted the salsa , we knew the food would be tasteless. The server was nice but did not have any knowledge about the menu or what was served with each dish. My mother asked if her entree came with a salad, our waitress said no, we double checked the menu after receiving our dishes and in bold it said "salad included." I had the Presidente with the Gordita,sope, and taco. I chose the barrboca, it was tasteless seems like they boiled it in water. My mother dish was awful that also had a bad odor to the meat. We waited 20 minutes to get checked on by our waiter, finally we had to ask her to come back to table. She asked the manager to come to the table. The waitress stayed at table to translate English and help translate our complaint since it was a language barrier. A heavy set Hispanic women in a black shirt listened to our complaint , rolled her eyes and asked if we wanted another item. My mom said no, and I told our waitress I would pay for my dish even though I did not eat all of the food. Waited another 15 minutes for our ticket , then someone finally comes over and says you all have to pay for the dish I order.....OK. I was offended because we just told both manager and waitress we were going to pay for my dish. Moral of story do not eat this food, save the extra 8 dollars and have quality service and Mexican food at Lopez's around the corner. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR !! read more

Food is authentico Mexicano. VERY good. Service is slightly slow but extremely nice. Haven't had anything I didn't like yet out of about 5 times and I run a kitchen myself. I stumbled onto this place today. I was looking for authentic Mexican food, and I found it! I tried the taco Al Pastor and the shredded chicken taco. Their gordita's were okay, but nothing special. The gorditas de carnitas were mixed with large chunks of fat that I had to remove, so watch out for that! The aguas frescas were watered down. read more
