This is a pretty authentic mexican place to eat and it's probably not in the safest area, so the windows and doors are barred up. They say the chips here are extra but we weren't charged for them. The folks who work there were pretty attentive, but probably don't speak a ton of english. You don't need to know spanish to eat here though and still be ok. The food was really good! We got the enchiladas and the fajitas. I would recommend getting either of them. We saw lots of people get the gorditas which looked awesome! I would probably go again and get them without a doubt. There are also a few tiendas nearby that sell tacos and things similar, but i don't think they are sit down restaurants and i haven't eat there so i can't compare them really well. The red salsa is super spicy and the green salsa is a little thickish, but both were good! I am white so i'm probably not the best authentic mexican food judge! read more

Eh, this place isn't great, but it isn't awful either.....it's more like, I'll only go if we happen to be in the area and want something somewhat quick. My family and I came here for dinner since my husband was craving pozole. It turns out by the time we had arrived, they had already sold out. I ended up ordering the chicken fajitas for one to split with my kiddo and my husband ended up ordering menudo. The fajitas weren't all that great...the chicken didn't taste fresh and majority of the hot plate consisted of onions and maybe a few slices of bell peppers. They also do not provide shredded cheese with the fajitas; that and some other "extras" will cost you. The plate did come with a tiny bit of sour cream, pico, guacamole, and rice. I tried spicing it up with the salsa that came with the chips, but it did no good. My husband liked the menudo, but said it definitely wasn't the best. The chips and salsa.....ugh the salsa appeared and tasted like it was super watered down. Such a disappointment as I love salsa! The chips were rather hard, so that made me doubt their freshness. The customer service is non-existent here as our drinks fell empty and not one server came to fill them up....the watery salsa ended up disappearing somehow and yet again, no one asked if we wanted more. My daughter needed to use the restroom and like always, I went with her. While the toilet area was clean, there were paper towels over flowing out of the trash can. There is only one restroom per gender, by the way, so there's no doubt that the entire female staff had seen this mess. read more

Gorditas Aguascalientas....named for both Gorditas (the food) and Aguascalientes (the city in Mexico....known in English as Warm Springs!).....this restaurant is in a dumply little center where the Cuban Cafe Piquet used to be and now another Salvadorian Pupusaria seems to be going out of business. Do not let that fool you however; this restaurant is puro mexicano. From the outside, you don't have great hopes, but when you walk in, it is a cute, clean and well ordered restaurant. At the doorway, you see a fruit/produce cart with giant cazuelas (earthenware caseroles) filled with fresh onions, avocados and other produce. Directly in front is a kitchen where the señoritas are making little corn masa pizzas (which will become sopes) and flat, thick disks that will become the gordita. Sopes (SO-pays) are 3" disks of corn mean that has a small rim build in, leaving a crater of middle that you can put all kinds of stuffings. Imagine anything that you wanted in a taco stuffed into the inside of the sope. The general archtechture is: crust, beans, meat, lettuce, tomatoes, onions/cilantro/tomatoes and greated fresh cheese. Gorditas are the same corn-y disk that has been fried and split and then stuffed with the same items. Gorditas are the Mexican equivalent of pita bread, so it is easy to think of it that way. There are lots of other alternatives on the menu as well. Huaraches (wah-rah-CHASE) are oval shaped fried masa (which looks like a sole of a sandle = huarache). Stuffings are all varied. From the pork carnitas with the spiky red sauce, carne desherbrada or shredded beef, the usual selection of cheese, avocado, rajas (roasted poblanos in strips), chicken, tongue, barbacoa, etc. The food was very nice. The service was so sweet and kind. While English may not be spoken here, the menus are translated correctly and you can point and choose. Of course, a few words of Spanish is always appreciated. They have big jars of juices, which I appreciate more than the commercial vats of stuff that circulate in most places like an aquarium without the fish. The Horchata (rice drink with cinnamon) was nice. I don't know if this place is open late at night, but it would be great for that 3 AM taco craving! Great place for breakfast. Very "local" indeed and, at 8 AM on a Saturday morning, people were already in there having coffee, gorditas and a beer. What's not to like?!?!?! read more

You know it's authentic when you are the only non-Hispanic in the room, and the servers barely know English. This place is pretty legit - simple Mexican food, surprisingly fresh, and for a great price! I recommend any of their gorditas and sopes. Chips and salsa have a nice kick. I absolutely love this place. Incredibly authentic and wonderfully flavored Mexican food. Particularly love the guisaido de puerco and the Mexican ham (sorry, can't remember the Spanish word). The name is tough to say, but eat here once and you'll be an expert...you'll keep recommending it to everybody! These people do not mess around. This is serious Mexican food. Not Tex-Mex, it's M-E-X-I-C-A-N. There's a big difference, people! Gorditas are good, tacos are great, and sopes are excellent. If you're reasonably hungry, just two of these items a la carte will fill you up. The ambiance is definitely "authentic" and the staff is friendly & helpful. Speaking of help, it also helps to have a native Spanish speaker with you when you order. The waitstaff speaks limited English (if at all sometimes). The place is packed at lunch, but it's more fun that way. Just remember that if you're going back to the office after eating here, you're going to have to fight off a serious food coma. read more

Let me start out by saying that the only reason I even tried this place was because of all the great reviews. But honestly I was very disappointed ;( The Sopes literally fell apart before I could get it in my mouth. The waitress was very nice but she forgot to bring my Gordita which is why I went to that restaurant to begin with. my son ordered the barbacoa tacos and he had the same issue with the tortilla falling apart before he could even take a bite out of it. Needless to say that he didn't eat the second taco after that. They had some musicians playing music,which the place is not big enough for all that noise to be going on while your trying to eat! Preface/background: I am now more focused on quality and am always looking for a great deal (read: value). Less meat, no more 2 Chipotle burrito eating. Authentic. Tasty. Cheap. The gorditas are good. It's nothing special, nothing too complicated, but what they do is good. Their beef gordita is so tasty. Well marinated but not too salty. Gorditas come served with a few shreds of lettuce and a small piece of tomato. Also got the beans and cheese and the cactus. Cactus was very tasty, almost like a salsa-y gordita. Also got the guac. Very high quality guac, but I could tell that if the avocados were a tiny bit fresher, it would've knocked it out of the park. Still though, the guac was really good. Service is very nice. Our waitress couldn't really speak much English but she brought someone over to help translate, which was cool. And they were really polite about it. People were kind - can't tell if that's a this-place thing or a Texas thing. But it was good. And when you get a dinner for around $13 for 3 gorditas and guac, you've gotta be a happy camper. As a person who grew up in Mexico I can tell you this place is really close to what you will find in a Mexican home, it's still not close to what my mom makes but I'd like to add my disclaimer: recipes do vary from family to family, from state to state so maybe I don't like some things but someone else could think they're good. God! Writing this is really bittersweet, I love some things and hate others... One reason I hate coming to this place is the restaurant itself is so small, it's been the same location for years and from what I see they don't plan on expanding even though there have been times were the spaces next to them were for sale and they never expanded! Weekend mornings are terrible, its PACKED and they usually lose customers because the place is so full that people have to wait outside. Oh! Also, the parking lot is terribly small for this place. They share parking lot with other businesses here and it's hard to find a spot specially during peak hours, weekend mornings, nights. I like their tacos but stay away from the barbacoa it's just there, not great not horrible, I think the quality of the meat is poor, the meat is really dark and the flavor is weird, tastes like meat has been dunk in fat, so I would steer away from that. I do not like their rajas because the pepper is not completely cooked which is usually done by roasting the peppers, seems like they don't want to take the time in roasting the peppers and it makes a HUGE difference in flavor and texture when doing so, I don't recommend the dishes that have rajas. Also, the sopes are ok if you're starving and never had sopes before. They put your choice of meat, lettuce and tomatoes. My number one reason to keep coming back to this place is their champurrado, I believe it's actually made with milk instead of water, which most places use (water based chapurrado is tasteless and not creamy at all, champurrado IMHO should be creamy!). Milk makes all the difference and this place has the winner! It's a little pricey but I don't mind paying extra because it's yummy! The gorditas are awesome, this is the only restaurant I know where you will get decent gorditas, the name says it all "Gorditas Aguascalientes".Usually the beans and cheese, nopales and mushrooms are great for gorditas, also the fajitas are pretty good, too. Overall I like this place because of the authenticity, consistent food (the few items I like, at least), friendly staff, the place is ran by nice people, I think it's a family business which is nice. read more

My ONLY complaint would be that the suite that the restaurant occupies is a little small, and that there is no parking on the strip mall when they're packed. This place has been a standby for me for many years. There are few places that go the distance and make their own corn tortillas. Gorditas Aquascalientas does, which makes a huge difference. I took my friend here for the first time yesterday and after a bite of his food, he says, "This place is authentic... really, really authentic. But I kind of prefer the gooey melted cheese in my enchiladas." He let me try some of his dish and... we'll call it a difference of opinion.
