Regular unleaded $6.60 per gallon 4/23/19

I'm a fan of a store basically in the middle of no where! It's cute tidy. Their gas station on the other hand... *face palm* Here's what I wrote for the gas station that I magically somehow was able to checkin to - otherwise, I got no service with Tracfone Wireless: In their song "Price of Gas," indie rockers Bloc Party sang, "I've been driving, a mid sized car, I never hurt anyone Is that a fact? The price of gas keeps on rising Nothing comes for free Make like a stone, make like a plant I can tell you, how this ends". I didn't feel good about paying $6.60 per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline on 4/23/19, but after reading other reviews before me I don't feel nearly as bad. I can tell you how my Gorda experience ended too. It hurt. It was a big fat negative for the ol' bank account ($112 for almost 17 gallons), but it was better to be safe than sorry with a truck pulling a trailer on the glorious Highway 1. Now listen to "Price of Gas": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve1d0VOREY0

Do not stop here for any reason. This place, in it's entirety, is a perfect example of "Highway Robery". On 8/5/21 we came here low on gas. Then saw the price for regular at $7.599, and premium well over $8.00! We put in 3 gals of reg, just enough to get us far away from this location. This site, with gas, store, and resturant should be boycotted! The owners of these businesses truly Do not like us! Gorda should be renamed "Gouge Ya".

State Route 1 along the central California coast. Stunning views, often on cliffs 500 feet above the deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, with the sun setting in the west over those distant ripple of waves, catching the golden glint of sunshine and twinkling like a kaliedescope that is the Golden State's picturesque treasure, beloved in awe by all who see it. Over 40 years ago, our First Lady at the time, Lady Bird Johnson, awarded this America's most beautiful highway. Somewhere on this curvy, vivid ribbon of beauty, where natural wonder meets man's small quest to find a way through it as well as enjoy it, lies the little enclave that is Gorda. Lost up against the cliffs somewhere between San Simeon to the south and Big Sur to the north, Gorda, also known as Gorda-by-the-sea, or Gorda Springs, was a Native American site that took advantage of the local springs. In April 2008, at the height of the gas price inflation, it was featured nationally as having the highest gas prices in the country, $5.40 a gallon! If you are needing a break after the winding roads of Highway 1, you might stop here for a break. There is a small, rustic motel and restaurant here, but it is not to any city or suburban standards, and doesn't get good reviews unless you lower your standards understanding this, or just like to be away from the crowds and enjoying the view. The Gorda Store, is just a little convenience store up from the restaurant, and offers a small selection of snack type items. I only stopped for a little sugar break, buying Reeses's Pieces for $1.50 and a 5 minute break. Despite the Beautiful setting, there was a hint of desperation in the cashier's voice after a rough year of the Big Sur fires, high gas prices, and the recession reducing tourists coming through. Gorda, California is at coordinates 35°5250N 121°2701W / 35.88048°N 121.45022°W / 35.88048; -121.45022 (Gorda, California)

    ROBBERY!

WARNING!!!! Before getting on HWY 1 in Big Sur, have enough gas to pass this place. Once on Hwy 1 saw a sign that said next gas 40 miles. We knew we had enough for 60 miles...well pulled into this place and was totally taken advantage of. Only get what you need..we grabbed 2 gallons at 5.99/gal and headed out...next gas is 12 miles from here. RIDICULOUS!

    Extreme gas price gouging.

Rip off. $3 for a small bag of M & M's peanuts. Check the other reviews. Owner response? Fat chance.

This seemed like a cute little store, pre-made sandwiches,…read moresnacks, drinks, and most items you would expect if you were traveling and forgot. What they did not have was a wall charger for my iPhone. I was sent here by a local resort I was staying at, having stopped two other places prior, only able to find car chargers. When I asked the nice lady behind the counter she said they didn't carry them either, because there is no cell service in the area most people aren't worried about charging in their rooms- makes sense! I however was having anxiety about having not being able to listen to my audiobook at night, and talk to my kids if there was an emergency. The wonderfully kind lady Patrica asked where I was staying (there is lodging attached to the market). I told her the nearby resort. She said I could borrow her PERSONAL one!! I did not spend money on their store, but can tell you I 100% will on my next trip. With employees like Patricia this is a place I want to give my business. I made sure to bring her charger back after my stay- which she made much more relaxing :)

They had Bao buns and sushi, a huge selection of cheeses and delicious looking cakes and pastries. It's a big grocery store and probably one of the main places locals go for their grocery needs. The person helping me at the deli counter was nice and that's kinda where it ended. While I was waiting for my strips and wedges order, I overheard an older man yell across the deli to a young man asking him to come to him. The older man then began scolding the young man, loudly, as I could hear him over the sounds of the deli and store traffic. He was scolding him for not telling him that he had gone on lunch? I understand maybe telling him once and to not do it again, but the older man kept on and on about it. It made me feel very uncomfortable and the girl preparing my order clearly looked uncomfortable as she kept looking back at what was going on. Very unprofessional. At check out, there were very long lines. Self serve was maybe 15 people long and normal lanes about 6 people. When it was my turn at the normal lane, the cashier looked visibly frustrated and speaking under her breath about someone coming to help. She said something like "now they help when the line died down". Also unprofessional. I'm in a beautiful city, doing what I love doing (camping), and I have this ugly and awkward experience. Employees acting this way in front of customers demonstrates what a toxic workplace environment looks like and I won't be giving them my business in the foreseeable future.

There's always Whole Foods Safeway, etc. but a hidden gem in Carmel Valley Village is Jerome's. It's not one of these huge Safeway Whole Foods warehouse size stores. It's actually small and terribly efficient in a good way. He has his own butchers and they actually butcher. Nothing comes prepackaged in cellophane packages. Excellent meat, fish, poultry. A very nice selection of produce local providers lot of organics and a homey feeling. This is definitely a local spot. It's about 12 miles from Highway one and a nice ride through the valley to get to the Village. Jerome has some great wines at reasonable prices and as you might guess a fairly good uniqueness to his French offerings. The same could be said for local SLH/Monterey vintages again at reasonable prices I found some price less than the wineries. Look it's not the size of total wine, but it doesn't have to be. It just has to be good stuff at the right price that you can enjoy when you're making dinner at home. And I always seem to managed to buy a few bottles when I'm in there. Today was a 2021 Pisoni reserve Pinot--yum. They do a really good job each day preparing certain foods that you can have for dinner. There's prime rib night. There's pork chops. There's spareribs chicken all cooked fresh that day. Want a sandwich no problem. They've got a crew that makes what just about whatever you want. Bottom line they do with the big guys can't do.-- high-quality really good service and staff that seems to always smile. Enjoy yourself.

We ordered 3 different sandwiches. All three were built generally the same. I personally had a pastrami on a French roll with several veggies to add freshness. Although the sandwich price at $12 is on par for custom built sandwiches these days, I was hoping for more meat and veggies that would stand apart from other delis. But it was probably the least filled sandwich that we all have had in a while. The bread was fresh as well as the ingredients, there just wasn't enough meat or vegetables in the sandwich. I think it is a decent sandwich for the convenience. I just won't get another sandwich or seek it out when looking for a deli sandwich. By the way, they did put a healthy portion of alfalfa sprouts. So if you like sprouts, maybe Jerome's will be your sandwich place.
