old fashioned gas pump
Paul L.

When I go to San Francisco, I try to drive the Pacific Coast Highway when I have the time so I can avoid Interstate 5 or the more uninspired stretches of Highway 101. Ragged Point is a convenient break on the winding sections of the Pacific Coast Highway. I always stop to get a latte or cappuccino and that's all my wallet allows before it bites me and quickly retreats back into my pocket. The reason is that the gas pumps here charge some of the highest prices in California. The cost per gallon is always a blistering $1.00 or more per gallon than what you would pay anywhere on the coast. You paid $3.29 at your usual gas station? Well, then you'll pay at least $4.29 here if you're lucky. [Prepare before you venture on PCH. If you're driving south from San Francisco, fill up your gas tank at Highway 1 and Rio Road in Carmel. It's the last real gas station until you reach San Luis Obispo. If you're driving north from LA, fill up your tank in Buellton, Santa Maria or San Luis Obispo.] Ragged Point offers great views so get some coffee and walk to the shore. Your wallet won't argue with that.

Super friendly guy at the counter. And very helpful. Pots of coffee, maps, trail mixes, ice cream bars and souvenirs for sale. Apparently a place locals frequent as well. Restrooms, great view, and a trail head behind the store. Outdoor eating area with umbrellas available. Gas station present too!

AWESOME place for a REST STOP! No, I did not eat at the restaurant or buy anything from the convenience store or snack shop which serves burgers, fries, etc. even though I was tempted to buy a latte from their adjacent cafe. There are clean public restrooms, an outdoor patio w/tables to eat at, a beautiful garden to walk around, and a nature trail in the back. Unfortunately, the mist was thick that morning so we couldn't see the great coastal view that we figured we would see but heard the waves crash beneath us. Plus, the nature trail was closed. I enjoyed listening to their local birds (black with a red patch on their wings) sing in their outdoor patio.

We stopped in for a large Topo Chico, a small wafer cookie ($3.50), and a 6-pack of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. The total was around $34, compared to the usual ~$20 elsewhere. Given how remote the area is, the markup makes sense, but it's still pretty steep. There's also a sign on the door noting it's $2 to use the bathroom. To their credit, the bathroom was really clean, just something to be aware of before you walk in. On the positive side, the beer fridge is awesome. It's an old-school, vintage-style cooler that's actually really fun to see. Overall, the store is convenient and well-stocked, but expect high prices across the board. If you need something in a pinch, it's a solid stop -- otherwise, I'd skip it to avoid the cost.

Sure the prices are higher, but for goodness sake, look where you are! You should have planned ahead! I LOVE stopped by here every time after leaving family property near Ragged Point - it's like prolonging our time in the area before heading back to real life.
