Love this place but it's rarely open! Best Coney in the USA as far as I'm concerned.

Finally broke down and went to the Gopher. I'm a huge fan of coneys, and folks said I should try the ones at the Gopher Bar. So my wife and I set out one Saturday to give 'em a try. One thing they got right: those are actual coney dogs. Not the chili dogs that some places try to pass off as coneys, but honest to god coneys. The franks are great, with a decent snap, and their coney sauce is 3/5. Fries were unremarkable. Service was crappy when we visited, and it's mostly American Lagers on tap. The atmosphere yells at you "we're a redneck bar godammit and we have an attitude!". Cool, I guess, if you like that sorta thing. Still, this is the only place in the metro I've found actual coney dogs, so three stars instead of two. read more

Great coney dogs and toasted ravioli. The coneys are loaded with chili cheese and onion, one of the best I've had. Was not expecting much from the toasted ravioli, but wow they were great. This is a cool dive bar, the bartender was lots of fun to talk to, she had a funny sarcastic attitude. They only take cash. I've seen in other reviews issues with the Confederate Battle Flag. Ok so they gave one. Get over it. They also have many 'tasteless' (but t I think funny) stickers and trinkets. If you are a little fluffy PC type you might want to eat and drink elsewhere. read more

Classic dive. I have no idea what some of the reviews here are complaining about. If you want to go to a dive bar, you better expect a dive bar. And no, your neighborhood bar is not necessary a dive bar. A dive bar is a bar where, when you use the restroom, you pray that you won't have to touch anything. It's the place where when you walk in, the place is empt save for the the dude with the teeth at the juke, the dudes that intimidate you at a corner booth, the alcoholic at the bar, and the bartender passing you a pitcher. Some reviews have complained about the beer? Last time I checked, kegs of Miller Lite come from the same place. Yet somehow the same beer tastes better a block away at Barrio? Give me a break. Get off your high horse. The hot dogs are expensive? Nope, unless you're too broke to shell out less than $10 for two of the best damn Coney dogs you'll ever eat in your life, plus a drink. tl;dr: Cheap beer, cheap Coney dogs, dive bar crowd (not the "trendy" dive bar crowd a la CC Club, but a real dive bar crowd). I'm definitely a dive bar enthusiast, and Gopher had been on my list for quite some time. I walked in excited for a beer and Coney, but immediately lost my appetite upon seeing the Confederate Flag flying proudly on the wall. I asked the bartender about it, to which he said "Oh, that doesn't mean anything." I dare say it means something to the families of nine people in Charleston. It's a shame, but I will never, ever step foot in this establishment again. My dollars are too well-earned to go to racists. read more

After passing this place a lot of times when visiting St Paul and reading some of the reviews here, I had to see what it was all about. As a political independent I wasn't too worried about the atmosphere as I'm quite thick-skinned. Here's what I found: A blue-collar working class bar in a blue-collar working class part of town. These places are a dying breed in this day of hipsters and microbrews. The food is good, plentiful and cheap with a good selection (they even have gyros!). I had a coney with cheese for $4, an order of fries for $3 and an order of jalapeno poppers for $7. Draft American beer (Old Style) was $3 a glass. My food and two beers cost a $20 bill, and yes, it's cash only. They do have an ATM on site. The coneys are very good- they have a nice snap when you bite them. Everything was fresh and cooked to order. The orders were big! I was so full afterwards I needed to take a walk! The atmosphere is straight out of 1949. Old, dark but clean and classic. I liked it. As I ate, I tried to imagine the generations of workingmen (and women) that had visited for a quick lunch and a beer. As for politics- so there's some right-leaning bumper stickers on a cooler. Big whoop. No rebel flag in sight. There was nothing I considered to be outrageous. I mean honestly, people, if you are so thin skinned that you get offended by a bumper sticker then you need to just stay home or go to the latest craft brewery. As I said, this is an old-school blue collar, working class bar, that's all. As far as attitudes, no one swore at me or was rude, in fact I ended up having a good conversation about the old days of St Paul with the owner and the bartender. You'll hear worse language and see worse behavior at a sports bar when the big game is on. I'm glad I gave this place a chance. I described it to my wife and she said "Wow, that sounds like your kind of place. Can I go along next time?" Next time I'm in town, I'll be going back. read more

If you like a very casual, dive bar atmosphere, with really one item on the menu that hasn't changed and is perfect, then this is the place for you! Bring cash, as "No Fucking Credit Cards" are accepted. That quote is on a sign directly behind the bar... been coming here for over 25 years and hasn't really changed except parking is slightly tougher now, but usually found on-street within a block or two. Interesting place the Gopher is. The owner is hillarious with his "no f*cking checks, f*cker!" signs everywhere. It's worth going just for that- otherwise...... The coneys are pretty average, not nearly as good as the Original Coney Island on St. Peter that keeps promising to reopen. They also aren't cheap- I think they are $3.50. The meat sauce is more like a sloppy joe and the hotdog itself is of the mystery meat variety. The best thing they've got going for them is the grilled buns. This facet makes them completely edible. The place itself is meant to be a dive and it is. The restrooms are stinky & filthy- I don't know what it is with St. Paul's "venerated" spots- between this place and Savoy, I'd rather eat in a satelite. read more

I'll say that this really isn't my kind of atmosphere but I was hoping that this was a hole in the wall place that served amazing food. It is not. While not terribly expensive, nearby Bulldog has much better food, including hot dogs. I've been going here since the Original Coney Island closed. The people here are the most obnoxious, opinionated, loudmouth, ass holes I ever loved to see. Every visit is a treat, the coneys are awesome and the place is a classic throwback. Don't order a import beer or Keith will call you "Mary".. Many memories will be made here for years to come. I've been here many times before when we lived closer. We still like to get there even though it's a little more of a trek. The coneys are great and they keep us coming back. Not so keen on the political signs pictures etc. But I choose to ignore those and quietly eat my coney (no cheese) with fries. Always get a rum and diet - short - and they always do a generous pour. This time we ordered the spinach and artichoke fried ravioli in place of the fries. Won't do that again. Ambience is a little divey but I do like the Christmas tree lights strung up on the deers antlers. There are assorted x-rated tshirts and sweatshirts for sale. It's obvious that you must come here for the coneys but if you get a chance try the coleslaw, it's the best in St.Paul. The staff treats everyone like family and if your a veteran George goes out of his way to make you feel appreciated. For those people that don't like the confederate flag hanging from the wall you should really lighten up Francis because this is his place and nobody tells him what to do, he fought for this country and if you don't like how he runs his place then GO TO HELL. read more

Real real gross: the meat on the dogs was gritty like sand, our waitress got extremely simple things wrong (no one ordered custom or off menu, literally "I ordered one he ordered two" type shit) AND she was mean about it, the racist epitaphs proudly draped on greasy walls, the drunks getting cut off at the bar, the roach in the bathroom...beyond dive, just a hateful trash heap. I was pretty drunk and having a damn good time the last time I stopped in. This time I looked around and realized that I was in 1961 Mississippi. Huge confederate flags? Right wing propaganda? I cannot comment on the coney islands that this place is famous for. The place inside is gross and so was the ladies bathroom. The whole place stinks and so will you when you leave! I love a good dive but this place is down right disgusting I can't believe people would actually eat the food here.... A group of 8+ of us went into the bar and did not get served. From all the political and racist signs and pictures on the walls I can only imagine it is because we were not all white. We ended up leaving because a server never even came to the table and when we went to the bar the bar tender never came over to take our order. I have had a better Coney at a nearby quick serve restaurant. And half the price. If you have some spices, ground beef and tomato sauce you can make a better Coney Sauce at home. Buy the dog you prefer and you are home free for a much better Coney then this place serves. Have been meaning to try The Gopher Bar for a couple years, just never got around to it until today. Have seen one of the owners at several meetings in Lowertown where she always whines about how her bar never gets any breaks while the city tries to woo new businesses downtown. After one visit I can say any business difficulties they may have are probably caused by the over-the-top obnoxiousness of the ownership, some staff, and many regular patrons. I live to eat so all could be forgiven for a really incredible food experience. Unfortunately they don't provide that-the Coney is ok but nothing to make a special trip for. I love a good dive so when I need an unpretentious meal with a beer I'll take Kelly's down by Union Depot any time-where both the food and atmosphere are classic dive without the side of ***hole. read more

Coney was so-so, waitstaff rude, and prices ridiculous. We sat at the bar and had two coney hotdogs, one French fry, and one drink apiece and our bill was $25! These are just hotdogs people! We probably would've had more to drink but our bartender/ waitress ignored us even though it was a Tuesday and there was literally two other groups in the bar. To top it all off, when we paid we gave the bartender $40 for a $25 check and she brings us back one 10 and one 5, no singles. She basically gave us no option than to tip her $5 or not at all; any good bartender knows to bring 1s with the change. read more
