I love Whitey's, their staff is personable and the prices are reasonable. Food - I have never had a bad thing before, specifically the seasonal chicken pot pie. The crunch wrap and smash burger are both delicious you can't go wrong. Drinks- The drinks are delicious my favorite are the peanut butter cold press and the hot beef injection shot. Ambiance - It is giving neighborhood dive bar, it feels homey and there is plenty of room. They have a basement that you can see comedy shows in or rent out. The big lady on the bar is always fun to look at too. Don't sleep on their sidewalk patio it is perfect for people watching. Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon for a late lunch/early dinner and some football. The space is awesome. If you are into dive type atmospheres but not an actual crap hole dive, this is the place for you. Long bar on the left and some tables on the right with a kitchen in back. The bartender was very friendly and prompt. My drink order was taken almost immediately after sitting down and she was right there every time it got empty. I ordered some fried pickles for an app. These were light, airy and crispy. I enjoyed them. Do be warned, however, these are little salt bombs. I also ordered a steak sandwich. Not crazy impressed with it. The cool/temp was perfect but it was a bit tough and chewy. Probably wouldn't get it again but would definitely go back and try something else. read more

A NORTHEAST HIDDEN TREASURE I've been to Whitey's plenty of times for drinks at night, (they have my favorite espresso martini), but after every other breakfast place was too busy on a Sunday morning, we stumbled into Whitey's. Wow! Who would've thought their breakfast is super tasty and VERY affordable. I don't think any meal on the menu was more than $15, and breakfast cocktails were reasonable too!. This bar is such a vibe & the staff was super nice. They gave recommendation and I liked everything I tried. The gentleman behind the bar recommended the Espresso Matini stating it's the best in the world. It's good! We got wibgs. They had a few options for flavors for the wings. I enjoyed the buffalo which were crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle! I would grab these again! Brussel sprouts - I wouldn't mind if they were a bit more crispy but still solid. Like many pubs, their beer selection is 100% local Minnesota beers. Service was great, our waitress told us about Minneapolis and recommended another local pub near our hotel. If you are ever in the NE area and are looking for a cheap lunch during the week with decent food and drinks, check this place out! We came in on a Monday and found seating right away at the bar. We were excited about the $5 lunch menu. My friend went with the cheeseburger and I decided to go with the roast beef sliders. The cheeseburger was very basic and straight forward. Nothing mind blowing but for $5, it was still a filling enough lunch. I thought the roast beef sliders were much better and I was surprisingly full from my meal. They have a decent selection of wine, beer, and all the rails you can think of to go with your meal. What we really decided to come back for the cocktail menu. I really enjoyed the pumpkin spiced russian but the drink that really blew us away was the peanut butter cold press. It's strong on the peanut butter and I would love having this along with my brunch or as an after dinner cocktail. Service both times we have been here has been excellent. I thought the spot was great. I honestly went into it not thinking the food would be good, but I was pleasantly surprised. They had an espresso martini on their menu and that was surprising and it happened to be really good. We tried the burger, which was really good and filling, not the best I've had in the Twin Cities, but it was still good. They also had a crunch wrap supreme and we tried to pickle fries. The pickle fries were OK, I've had better but I thought they were still pretty good. I honestly really like the ambience of the spot. It was lively, it was busy, and there was a cozy fireplace next to where I was sitting, so it was nice and warm. My only qualm is the service was a little slower but I think they might be a little short staffed so just be expecting a wait if you go there on a Friday night. Whitey's so far has survived the encroachment of Minneapolis's unending appetite for bulldozing old time establishments (Nye's?) in favor of high density mixed use development. All the food is good - the sliders, the beef sandwich with jus, the fries, the chicken sandwiches.....plus a great draft menu to boot with a combination of local and national craft beers (Bell's Two Hearted!) Years back I came here occasionally for their turkey burger, which was good. More recently though I've had the French onion soup which was mediocre, and yesterday's breakfast was also mediocre. Eggs Benedict: way too much sauce, covering the whole plate. The hash browns were okay but a very small portion. With a proper amount of hollandaise sauce the potatoes could have been on the same plate. The 'fresh squeezed' OJ was thin and the coffee a tad weak. It's getting cold here now and they had their ceiling fans on high which seemed to be circulating cool air so the food cooled down too quickly. We were a big group, maybe thirty people, and the waitress handled it fine. I won't be rushing back, that's for sure. read more

There's nothing to really say about it other than it's a solid bar with ok food and TVs in case your bracket is doin gwell and you are with a bunch of people who couldn't care less. The food is ok, nothing to write home about, but it's solid bar food none the less. I seem to be ending p here regularly but with no desire to do so. Whitey's is another one of our office staples for lunch. According to my lunch ordering regulars, they have the best BLT and best cobb salad in town. I have yet to partake in Whitey's BLT, but the cobb salad is a close second to the Blue Door Pub's cobb. The bacon on Whitey's cobb salad is thick and crispy, which is a hard mark to hit. I can only imagine how awesome the BLT must be. The staff at Whitey's is always very patient and accommodating. I've got picky eaters on my hands, and they always listen attentively to the changes I need made (no onions, extra dressing, etc...), and the kitchen always gets it right. Pricing is fair - you get a lot of food for the $10 you pay for an entree. If you order fruit with your sandwich, be prepared for a treat. We always get whole slices of pineapple or melon, often with berries or other fresh fruit. It's not your typical sad cup of canteloupe and grapes from last Sunday's brunch leftovers. Dining in can be hit or miss - I've had great service at Whitey's, and I've had poor service at Whitey's. The food is consistently good, and I'll definitely keep ordering for lunch. read more

But then again, I look fabulous in dim light ! Talk about laid back on a Sunday evening, totally comfortable and not super packed. We even found a close parking spot. I was there with daughter, and we split a $7 salad that could have fed a family of 4, and one of the best walleye sandwiches I've ever had. No batter on the fish, just pure unadulterated, FISH ! On a tasty hoagie roll. Yum. And again, frickin tater tots. I think I might have to go to a support group meeting to lay off the little tater gems. We almost ordered the fruit instead, but, our better sense took over :-) So this HUGE wooden half naked lady , larger than life, is mounted above the bar with a NO SMOKING hanging. I've been a long time patron of Whiteys, and have tried many things over the years. Pros and cons: Pros: -Great atmosphere, large open space with a few screens. Lots of light coming in, good people watching, and Comfortable spacious bar seating, and a fireplace for the colder months. -The fresh fruit is always on point. -The salsa is really good, and I believe homemade. -Monthly specials always vary. -I find the modest beer and wine list refreshing. In a city with 100 craft beer options at most places, I actually appreciate a shorter, more thoughtful drink menu. Cons: -The food is very hit or miss. I've had a few things that were awful (Caesar salad with wilted romaine, a coconut banana pie that tasted weirdly like garlic...) and a few that were very good- namely the shrimp and with dill and cream cheese lavosh appetizer. -The fries are the skinny McDonald's style. good if you like that but it's not for me. -The service can be spotty if you're sitting at a table. -They used to offer crab/shrimp artichoke dip, and quesadillas but they are long gone! I still miss them. -the street Parking can be tough. But they do offer a small lot after 6 pm M-F, and all weekend. Overall, I can recommend Whiteys if you want a low key place to catch a game, a drink and a bite to eat. Man, do I want to love Whitey's. I really tried! It's just not going to happen. The place itself is not the issue - I love that as soon as you walk in it feels like you're back in the old Nordeast, filled with all types of people from all walks of life, with beer from decades ago still leaving its pungent olfactory mark on you, and it has a killer-awesome old bar. The problem is the food. It isn't BAD, it's just not GREAT for the price. Every time I've been here (granted, I've only ventured in for brunch), I feel like I am going to be getting an inexpensive brunch in my 'hood. Unfortunately, I always end up spending as much as I do at higher-priced (and higher-quality) restaurants, except without the satisfaction of having just eaten a delicious meal. The huevos were so-so. When I asked our server if they came with beans, she looked at me like I was IN-sane. It's just a pile of eggs (50/50 chance of them being cooked the way you want them), salsa, likely an entire brick of cheese, a tortilla or two, and some other toppings. They aren't bad; they just aren't what I expected for the price. The biscuits and gravy are pretty awesome. I might have just had bad luck with the other food, and will definitely come back for dinner to give Whitey's another go (I hear the burgers are worth trying), but Whitey's brunch and I need to accept our irreconcilable differences. The atmosphere is 5-star in my book (minus the surplus of hipster kiddos), but the food has some catching-up to do. For you drinkers out there, the bloody mary is good, as are the martinis. Otherwise, it's pretty standard bar fare. Bottom line: Whitey's is absolutely worth the experience, but you're better off going in with no expectations and being pleasantly surprised than expecting a 5-star bar meal and ending up with just another regular ol' bar meal. read more

There was nothing that stuck out, nothing interesting, nothing creative. It wasn't full that night yet we went an awful long time with empty drinks. And, finally, the bill. What a mess. I enjoyed my portabella sandwich almost as much as the view of the giant, scantily clad woman mounted above the bar. It was a pile of balsamic-coated veggies, with grilled onions and roasted red peppers trying to sneak out the whole time. I also tried a bite of my friend's walleye sandwich and immediately came down with a case of food envy. The fish was perfectly done with a crisp breading and a spicy aioli. Mmm... will order that next time fo-sho. As others have mentioned, Whitey's seems to be the homey, unpretentious antidote to our city's douchey bars. Granted, we didn't stay the whole night, but the crowd and the atmosphere seemed much more manageable than some of the other bars in NE. It was busy but not overwhelming. A couple of missteps last night: Our server was a bit surly, but our food came out lightning fast (especially for a party of six)... and the wait assistant/bar-back helping her was much more friendly. The beer is expensive and I don't think they have specials. The $6 Blue Moon pints were declared "a rip-off" by my friend, who paid more for her beer than I did for my vodka. read more
